Games are usually $60, and some of them don’t even last over 50 hours. It’s not that farfetched if you think about it.
By the way, I bought mine for $80 used. It was worth it in my opinion.

Look for a guy on srk called DaRabidDuckie. He’s done a mod job for me and his work is quite good.
Yep, that one.
I’m the kind of person who doesn’t think games need to be costing that much anyway. I’m pretty stingy about buying games that won’t last me a really long time/beg for multiple playthroughs/replays anyway though. I’m quite interested in a stick though, and if I see a deal that catches my eye I’m sure I’ll cave in.
Yeah, characters (at least in SSF4) that don’t have any complex inputs I use fine with my dualshock. But using Guile and Chun and having Sonicboom/Kikoken come out reliably or even CONSIDERING trying to get Balrog/Dee Jay’s moves to work is next to impossible for me to do. My only other complaint is reliably getting double qcf and qcb ultras to work reliably (which is just about everyone). For example, I’ll just say Ryu. About half of the time the input considers me doing a shoryuken rather than using Metsu. Akuma’s ultra 1 is pretty much the only one I consistently get out when I want, because it doesn’t have any motions associated with it.
Anyway, thanks for enlightening me. Should have figured you guys would have been biased about the price when I was asking anyway. =p
Well I’ve been playing fighting games since I was 7 (Street Fighter 1), so it’s in my blood. The amount of hours I put into the Street Fighter series is far and away more than any other genres I played combined so the investment in a stick was worth it. My initial stick was a MAS stick, which almost everyone had about 8-10 years ago and that was about 150 bucks. However, I don’t play as much as I used too and was too cheap to buy the TE stick. You could do what I did and just buy the SE stick, which I got on sale for like $40 or $50.
Stick vs. pad will always be a debate. There have been plenty of people that have won major tournaments against some of the best players in the US using a pad. One of the best C. Viper players, Crizzle, plays on a PS3 pad. She’s by far the most technical character in the SF4 series and he’s won major tourneys. It really is all about preference and how you want to play the game. I started playing fighting games seriously back in august of 2009 and I played on a 360 pad. I played cammy and I couldn’t do TK cannon strike on that thing to save my life. I switched to a stick in January 2010 to play TvC and since then I feel like have become 100x better. There’s a lot more I could say about my experiences with playing on a pad, but long story short it was worth it. There would be no way I could ever play a game like MvC3 on pad.
But yeah, sticks are expensive. I can understand your concern. My stick is the second best model you can buy on the market right now (the madkatz TE slim) and it cost me $150 at the time. But here’s the thing for me. I bought it because I knew I would be playing more fighting games than just SSF4. I bought it to play Blazblue, MvC2 and 3, Old Guilty Gear games, KOF13 when it comes out and other SNK games on XBL. I’ve even used it to play shoot 'em ups. So for me it was worth it. Llike I said before it’s all preference. But if someone came up to me and said “hey I only want to play MvC3, I’m not interested in any other fighting game so should I get a stick?” I’d say hell no.
It’s hard to tell if you need a stick for anything important in MVC3, but so far pad seems fine. SFIV still benefits a good amount from stick (plinking and piano) but it’s not required even if you play Viper, Gen or Cammy, for example.
With that said, I’ve improved a lot once I got used to stick, and transitioning from one fighter to another has never been smoother. Parts being easily replaceable is a bonus.
But really it comes down to how much time you’ll put into the game, and other games you plan on playing. For me, the only type of games I’ve been interested in lately are fighters and 2-d sidescrollers/beat-em-ups. It’s possible to play FIFA on stick (lol) but I don’t recommend it, and for shooters it’s pad all the way.
i find it much easier to mash on sticks.
I lost weight when I play on sticks.
I’ll be in town for next weeks get together. Couldn’t make it out to the St. Pete tourney as planned but oh well more important things came up. Looking forward to trying out my Marvel team against you guys.
That’s cuz you mash and pound on sticks like a madman
There’s another way to play?
In other news I found a way to play that’s even lamer than arthur projectile spam + haggar lariat.
Arthur builds meter and storm comes in to x-factor chip kill mans with ice storm.
Don’t forget, you first heard these godlike strats in the gainesville thread!
hey everyone, had a great time on saturday, it was good to get some games in with people that actually know how to play the game. i’ll still be a scrub for awhile in MvC3 but i’ll get better eventually. working on modok combos and trying to get someone else on my team that is a little more offense or meter building oriented.
we should pop in something i’m competent at so i can show you guys i’m not a total scrub, haha. do you guys head to tournaments often? i usually go to final round and in the past in games ive been good at (SC2, tekken 5 DR) ive gone to quite a few other majors like evo and NEC. when i moved to gainesville and saw that the 3d fighter scene was non existent i pretty much fell off in my 3d games due to lack of comp/ other players to travel with.
if i could get good enough again to travel it’d be fun to get back in the loop.
i’ll put names to faces soon, but in the meantime it was nice to meet you all.
Thinking of ditching Dante and using Arthur as an assist, with Chun as battery and Zero to punish anything with lvl3 hyper.
Or Chun, Iron Man, Wesker…
lol I’m not using Chun to piss Petey off, though it is an awesome coincidence.
Saturday was indeed fun.
I’ve only recently started going to tournaments. I’m going to final round this year to get rocked at sf4. I’m trying to limit the number of games I play to sf4 and marvel, just because time limitations make it hard enough for me to be decent at 2 games, nevermind more.
I’m all for getting new games into the rotation too. Just because I have marvel going in two rooms doesn’t mean we can’t switch out one set up for something else. It might help to get a third setup for an alternate game, but I’m not sure where a third setup would go in my small apartment. I’m always up for suggestions though.
If that’s the case I might have to hope on the chun just to troll him. Her air dash, headstomp, legs crap is so fun.
I played the heck out of SC2, but it’s been quite a while. (Kilik and Maxi mostly) I’ve only been to a tournament as a spectator, but it was still fun. We definitely need to hook up some SSF4, but I planned on sticking to that and Marvel for now. My copy finally says it shipped and should be here sometime this week.
Speaking of the names to faces thing, I got Than and Folken down, and from the post I assumed KAb is Colin?(whatever variation you spell it as) I’m sure we’ll get them down once we go a meetup a few more times.
Wesker is always a good choice.
Yeah. The sticks are absolutely worth it if you want easier execution moves. (I say this a non-stick user, so…) That said: I’m a cheap-ass like you and yeah, holy shit the prices for one “controller” to play 2-3 fighting games with just doesn’t justify the cost for me.
/Maybe someday I’ll get a stick…
//That is, if I ever get fucking hired and have money to burn along with a racing wheel. sigh
So, you guys plan to meet up on Saturday this week? I could swing this week and watch Marvel games until Jill comes out. wistful sigh
NO ONES ALLOWED TO SEE IT! EVER! I play with it covered in a brown paper bag so only I may lay eyes upon it.
ur stick would look cool if u had the akuma template on it. u should bring it to the next meet i wanna see its sexiness
