Ga Thread (Home of the don't get punched in the face stratagy!)

Money matches are basically playing someone in a set for money. Typically the stipulations is something like first person to win 5 games get a set amount of money. They were kind of rare before the days of marvel. But they got rather huge. I believe this was made famous by NYC players who made it popular to run money matches.,

One of the main reasons for money matches is the aftermath of a tournament. Generally if there is a tournament and someone beats you and you may not feel it is justified, then people were known to run it back for money. So they would challenge the person to something like 5 games because this would prove who is actually better. In tournaments, sets are smaller and anything could happen. In money matches it gives you time to adapt to someones strategy and adapt your own.

The problem is that money matches became so popular at events like Evo, that casual players started money matching each other. And in many cases people would use money matches as more of a hustle than for the competitive purpose they are meant for. So you get cases where players will challenge who they are feel lesser skilled players so they can get “free” money. Where as they will never challenge someone of an equal skill level because of the possibility they may lose. As you can guess this someone weakens the scene as a whole. But it does happen.

Sorry, I can be a bit loquacious

the reason why mpr and omnislash is good is not because of people who post here on this forum, its because they play to play…oh yeah, and they PRACTICE. now while your too grown up to practice any game, be good in any game, or admit your idoicracies (although i feel you just post to be funny, which is funny, and i enjoy reading your posts :woot:), you have to admit people dont practice or take shiet seriously as a whole here in ga.

there is a reason every game in ga almost has a definitive BEST or top 3, and then there is a HUGE dropoff. [and when i say every game, i dont mean arcana hearts, bloody roar, any of that other side tournament stuff]

i was not singling you or anybody out in my posts…just stating some stuff since people want to post INSIDE the ga thread that ga sucks.

on another note, i pray the hawks win tonight. wth is up with josh smith wanting to shoot 3’s…somebody better tell him he got into the nba for jumping.

what up everyone. just want to let you guys know that impact clash is under new management. magnicious and myself are now business partners. the next clash is in November and it’s back in Atlanta. it is also back on the marta line. i’ve just posted the thread last night, so if you guys are curious take a look. things are going to change and i’m a little more experienced with how a tournament should be run. so what do you guys think?

:wow::cool::woot::party:

What time does WABA get started Sun?

“official” time is registration starts at 2, tourney starts at 3, but usually the tourney doesn’t wind up starting until like 3:45, but I would show up earlier just in case.

I will see you guys at waba tomorrow to test my skills in SF4. I CANNOT play on hori sticks. but i’m going to find a way to learn how.

Man, have you ever played anyone on GGPO in Alpha 2. Those guys are super offensive. I mean they are on offense like 100% of the time. They refuse to be on defense at any point of the match. Anyway, I’m proud of myself because I played a really aggressive Akuma player. He beat the living shit out of me, but I was able to adapt to his extreme offense. However he was good, because he started changing up his attack patterns when he saw me adjusting.

What’s going on today?

And, does anyone know of a way to get in touch with JTO? I don’t have a number or anything, and the last time I asked, he said his phone wasn’t working.

About to go to Waba, and then to Mike’s. Get at me!

I think that next time Shiki and I play you in EX3 you’re going get a taste of my Hokuto, Garuda and Shadowgiest.

I’m serious.

Who is coming to my place tonight?

:china: your defeat will be a sight to see Daniel son:china:

Mr. Pokchop seems to think Shiki and I are just like the run-of-the mill chumps he gets wins on and deprives them of their lunch money.

Shiki’s Durun is like Raw Power made flesh, and my Hokuto and Garuda team might as well be destruction incarnates devouring the world on a cataclysmic scale.

You’ll regret not taking me and Shiki seriously.

@marvel…I dont play X-men so if you want a match that lasts more than 30 secs im down…I usually stick with capcom chars…Jill, capcom,Tron

ive played shiki…V.Rosso is serious business… ryu and ken seem weak in compared to EX chars…not saying they are bad…EX has more set-ups…

hawks…

Sorry to interrupt again, but I always love a friendly chat about EX3.

I wouldn’t say Ken and Ryu are “weak”, although I understand your point because of the majority of “top” tier characters in EX3 are considered to be the Arika characters.
But keep in mind that EX3 is a tag game for a reason. Thus, picking a team of two characters that complement each other and work as a cohesive unit is much more important than picking two top-tier characters without regards to how they work. On their own, Ryu and Ken are kinda average in EX3 but they work very well together and their tag combo potential is extremely high for reasons that should be self-evident.
EX3 is also very well balanced…the difference between top tier and bottom tier (Nanase, Claw, Jack, Sakura) in that game is small.

It’s true that most Arika characters have a lot more options and freedom to their style than the Capcom chars, but that was definitely intentional. I believe the Capcom chars like Ryu, Ken, Gief, Guile, etc. were meant to be “solid” and familiar for veteran players whereas the Arika chars were meant to be a little more flashy for players willing to experiment.

It makes sense because the SF2 chars are so classic, archetypal, and emulated, that trying to improve them is like trying to re-invent the wheel. Take Guile…you don’t need to give him anything fancy–as long as he has a good Sonic Boom, a good Flash Kick, and a good super to combo into he’ll usually be pretty solid.

Very few of the Arika characters I would say are solid and well-rounded…most of them don’t have a good projectile or anti-air special as solid as a DP or Flash Kick. Instead they have more options.

Like Sharon, she’s pretty fast but her specials also have a diverse mix of moves.
She has: a Wheel Kick, rekkas that can mix-up into comboable mid or a low grab, a command throw, a step kick she can cancel into combos…wait a minute…this sounds familiar somehow.
Almost like there was a new game whose new main character who shares a lot of similarities…hmmmm…doesn’t ring a bell.

I know it can’t be anyone from SF4 though, because as we all know EX3 sucks and is irrelevant and there is no way that they took anything from that game in order to help shape SF4 :wonder:

back on people. as u see i have a new gamertag so hit me up for sf4 matches/:wgrin:

Well yeah it seems like IC4 will be my last event in Georgia for awhile. I need to figure out what I’m going to take to Pennsylvania because it will then get filtered to what will get taken to Australia. I’m just happy the semester is finally over.

This year was pretty good getting to know a lot more of the people in the community. My grades took a hit but it was worth it. You have to make the sacrifice sometime and when i was concentrating on school super hard last year and gettin those good grades… well it wasn’t fun :stuck_out_tongue: I wanted to give shoutouts to everyone I met and really had a good time with this year.

Ernesto: Great games man, keep it up and keep improving your game. Like I said at IC, if you want to go back to school do it. It’s definitely not too late and you’ve got what it takes, you know you do. We’ll get some more games online before I go to Australia.

Marty: Those weekends you came over right when SFIV came out were pretty good, games and wings. I had to make sure I didn’t fail everything but we’ll get more games in when I come back. It was always a pleasure hanging out at tournaments too, you’re a character :stuck_out_tongue: I still laugh about at final round, yelling to DQ jwong haha

Larry: Man thanks again for running Final round and keeping the community going. You’ve had some tough times lately it seems like but keep it up, you do so much good that it’ll come around. Keep munchin on those faces.

Vincent+Victor: You guys are awesome. Vincent you should watch the new dogface show episodes if you haven’t already. We always crack jokes from the AI videos and I know you’d like the treasures that are in the newest episodes of DF. Vincent if you want to learn ST go for it, you’ll definitely have a better grasp of the game now than when you tried to before. You should also focus on unleashing that beast during tournament matches more often. It’s like a switch just gets flipped and you go into “oh I’m going to win now” mode. Victor, don’t get sucked into any more RPG games haha… Then again… I did love hearing the stories from RPG syndrome. Again, thanks for letting me crash at your guys place whenever we were headed off to a tournament, I’m sure it’ll happen again when I come back and I look forward to it!

Joel: Damn you were tired at IC man. I was disappointed I didn’t get to see you run TvC at all and we still never got those guilty gear matches in huh… Oh well. Someday! Take care of them sticks and make that money while I’m gone, if you run into anything weird just hit me up. Most of all though, relax! You’re going to be a dad by the time I’m back, enjoy it. =]

Tech: Enjoy your time in a place where arcades still have a bunch of fighters! Keep repping those low tiers.

Juan+Mike+Ray: Good times guys, rep ATL at Evo Juan!
Kiyoki: Good games, watching chun beat up on people at ic was good. The augusta group was so strong! Jay was pretty chill too. He was the only other Augusta guy I really talked with, Rufus power.

Eddie: You’re always entertaining man and I’m glad to see another rufus player in the area. We need to get some games in eventually though.

If any of you guys want to play some ST on 2df hit me up. If one of my HS friends has xbl I’ll post the tag so I can get games in. It was fun to get involved with another community, first MD now here and soon I’ll find out whats going on in Sydney too.

I’ll pop into the thread from time to time to see what’s good but it was fun guys and it’ll be good to see everyone again when I finally do come back.

Good games + good times everyone.

Sorry dude, been busy as shit with work. I can get those days off from my first job no problem. My 2nd job is taking a little more work (Fucking Wal mart), but im definitely trying to get them off. Im gonna keep bugging them untill i get it. Lol! You coming to Waba today? If so we can talk more then.

Speaking of waba. Who all is going today. Hopefully it’s a big turnout this week.

@Joel/Itachi - you coming to waba today? I have a project for you.
