I don’t doubt at all that the PSP had great potential but the whole hacking thing is null since both systems were victims of being hacked. I have respect for the PSP since it’s the only system so far that’s been able to stand up to Nintendo’s handheld and do as well as it has. The numbers I posted for your remark of Nintendo needing a true powerhouse system and anyone who’s been following the industry knows that that isn’t the case.
Phone games won’t replace an actual handheld experience unless they actually place strategic buttons and analog on the phone to make it a better experience. I’m just most people didn’t go ‘ah shit I can’t wait to buy new phone to play Street Fighter 4 on it’. That port is sub par but it’ll do if I wasn’t serious into gaming and there’s a high chance that you’re serious into gaming you’re going to be less likely to even buy that port.
There’s a number of good 3rd party titles on the 3DS or are coming. Just because I don’t have them high up enough on my list to purchase doesn’t mean they aren’t good. Shinobi, Heroes of Ruin, Professor Layton, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Monster Hunter 4, and then there’s the host of other games that are remakes or ports that are still great like Cave Story and Street Fighter, Blazblue and then whatever else is going to be announced at E3 from the Western Devs. I’m looking at things in an objective manner and not just what appeals to me. Just because I don’t play CoD or Halo doesn’t mean I’m just going to ignore it and write it off. If none of those games that are out there appeal to you that’s cool, but there are other people who will buy it.
As for releasing the system early? Yeah I can see that but looking back from a business perspective…if they had tried to do what they did then and pushed it back to the holiday season then it probably wouldn’t have been able to gather as much steam as it has now. They got the system out a year before the Vita with minor complaints (I’m talking about hardware failure and the bottom screen scratching the top screen type stuff) and were able to see if 3rd parties were able to pick up the slack. Unfortunately a bunch of 3rd party games that were planned to come out either got pushed back or failed to live up to expectations…that isn’t Nintendo’s fault especially when they know they’ve had a problem with 3rd party support and are trying to fix it. Nintendo games are a double edged sword…if anything third party releases at the same time as their game then nobody pays attention to the 3rd party effort.
