Future of Nintendo? Bright.. or Dark

Nintendo games have stronger lifetime sales than CoD.

From a business perspective…A game that sells 34.36 million copies over the course nearly a full generation (Mario Kart Wii) is more desirable than a series that takes 2 games within 3 years to make the same number( CoD4: Mod Warefare/ CoD: MW2 ). Especially when you take into account money spent on both titles…that includes development, advertising and marketing, etc. If we’re looking at it from a game by game basis then I’m sure both MK and CoD make their development costs back within the first 6 months…CoD more so since it probably makes back it’s development costs probably within the first few weeks if not sooner but Nintendo’s first party franchises usually have ridiculous long legs in the market place. After the year is done the sales on any one individual CoD title starts to trickle out where as Nintendo’s first party stuff is generally still selling at a steady pace. That’s a lot of profit off of one game…one game that has stays in the $40-$50 range throughout those years vs. a title that drops it’s price by 9 months to a year out.

Also CoD has generally been making more sales through Microsoft throughout this current generation and not Sony. Whether that changes going into the next generation will be anyone’s guess.

Main GTA games are sold every 4-5 years and sell millions and millions, even more than CoD in some moments.

From what I’m reading so far GTA IV’s last recorded sales units are at 25 mil and the only CoD game that’s at that level currently CoD: Blops at 25 mil. I don’t see any current numbers yet on MW3 or Blops 2 aside from all the records and sales that were broken at launch and the weeks thereafter so far.

Please Nintendo!

Gaf’s thread on the link is retarded, don’t know why I wasted my time reading any of it’s replies knowing 90% of then would lack any common sense or understanding of basic business. I’m really glad Nintendo is sticking to it’s guns and not caving in to stockholder pressure by releasing first party games on smartphones and tablets, but 9 million units?! Is Iwata insane?

I really hope Wii U sells well this holiday, I’d hate to see the “major overhaul” happen at Nintendo which we all know means moving out of the console business and becoming a mobile game developer. Still though what can Nintendo do to recover? Super Mario 3D World will moves 1-2 million units at least, as well Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Zelda, and especially Smash but, those games are all months away and even then they’re plugging up leaky holes on a sinking ship. To survive in the long haul Nintendo needs to convince 3rd parties to develop exclusive games on Wii U which will be hard considering all the attention is on PS4/Xbone or Nintendo needs to start developing new GDLK franchises that capture the Spiritt of their flagship IP’s.

Yeah not surprised. Microsoft has been the preferred console for FPS games. The next killer app FPS is hitting Xbox One exclusively also (Titanfall, PS4 confirmed to never get a release). Same shit, new gen.

When’s Smash?

I agree but honestly unless PS4 and Xbox One both bomb on a similar level, I Nintendo will probably start to phase the Wii U out quickly and maybe release something along the lines of a 2DS style streamlined redesign of the Wii U hardware with a few more features in or before 2015.

They really have only themselves to blame, the Wii U probably could have sold more had they made smarter decisions regarding advertisement budget and things like the console’s actual looks along with not making a new type of Wii U exclusive remote to advertise along with it. No other Nintendo console, has felt like they spent less time on how to make it offer unique game play experience then the Wii U given how even in Nintendo’s own games they seem to avoid really making the game pad necessary outside of off TV modes or its multiplayer usage in Nintendoland.

As long as the console market exists so will Nintendo.

Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, AND a brand new Zelda game should been coming THIS YEAR.

It seems to me that Nintendo never anticipated Sony and Microsoft releasing new consoles, but the sad thing is that even if PS4 and Xbone weren’t coming, the WiiU would STILL be dead compared to PS3 and 360 sales.

3DS is good, but Nintendo failed their next gen console. Nintendo failed the gaming industry. Nintendo failed their own fans. I’m not gonna wait a year to play Smash Bros. and some demo of a new Zelda when I can be playing Knack, Killzone SF, Resogun, OctoDad, The Witness, Transistor, Infamous: Second Son, and DriveClub before Summer 2014.

It’s over.

Nintendo didn’t fail anybody, but the morons who are gonna drop $400-$500 on “next gen” consoles that will have a multitude of problems*(lack of good exclusives/shoddy hardware-OS)* for the next year or so.

3DS is the BEST CONSOLE this generation hands down in terms of library variety and actual, interesting games. Pokemon is printing money right now and there’s Zelda: ALBW coming, along with a laundry list of other titles.

Nintendo is going nowhere. Y’all really need to worry about your boys at Microsoft, because if all those rumors are true, that machine is gonna be buggier than a picnic lunch sitting on top of an ant hill.
But we all know there will be dumbasses that will just buy another 2 or 3 Xbones like they did 360s… SMH

I have a Zelda 3DS XL preordered. :coffee:

3DS can carry Nintendo for years, but if WiiU isn’t overhauled by holiday then 3DS is all Nintendo will have until their next handheld.

Let’s all follow random youtubers that are most likely quoting info from GT or Kotaku in some form or another.

^ Dumbest post of the year contender ^

Yes because selling 460K units AKA 5% of expectations with a year head start isn’t a failure to anyone. Also it’s not a good look when your best argument is a criticism of what the other guys are doing.

-Nintendo had a full year head start and blew it, even MS capitalized on that and they had RROD
-Nintendo named the system the exact same name as their previous system with a U tacked on
-Nintendo spent $8.95 on advertising for the system
-Nintendo trotted out a severely underpowered console, relying on it’s exclusives that weren’t there
-Nintendo’s big launch game was…a “new” SMB that came out months after NSMB2 from a series core Nintendo fans didn’t like much
-Nintendo’s excuse for not having games at launch or even a year after launch is “we didn’t know HD games took a long time”
-Nintendo has now a year later NSMB, The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, and…uhhh an HD remake of WW

It’s great that you’re happy with your Wii U purchase, but the rest of us have higher standards and are waiting until more games that should have been released at launch or in launch window arrive. For me personally Pikmin 3 and WWHD are cool but not a huge deal. And as amazing as the upcoming Super Mario 3D World looks it’s still just one game and along with The Wonderful 101 that makes 2 must have games for most veteran Nintendo fans and that doesn’t justify $250-300.

Nintendo is just like Capcom except at least Nintendo has the humility to admit they fucked up, now hopefully gamers will give Nintendo a second chance.

Pfft no Bayo 2 in your post?

Nintendo definitely failed their expectations and made some crucial errors. It’s no where near the nightmare PS4 was in its first year. WiiU will make it through this gen no problem but it obviously won’t be the success the Wii was.

Also that post isn’t a contender for dumbest post of the year like why you hatin’ so much? This dude woke up on the wrong side of Calcutta like damn.

Obviously someone never read the DmC Thread or any random FGD thread if that’s your dumbest post contender.

Onto the parts of your post that have actual content, I’d argue Nintendo didn’t fail so much as the marketplace has become this bizarro landscape where quality no longer matters… All you need to do is spend $150 mil+ on advertising and get Drake to hock you wares and you’ll sell millions.

Nintendo overestimated that the success of the Wii would carry over into the WiiU and pulled a Sega when it came to advertising i.e. little to no ads at all.

They also have the deck massively stacked against them-- Game “journalists” take every opportunity they can to heap shit on them… Watch anytime that tool Keighley interviews Reggie for an example. Reviewers are notoriously harsh in their criticisms of Nintendo games “following the same formula,” but Call of Duty/Ass Creed are essentially the same game every year and keep getting “GAME OF THE YEAR,” “PERFECT 10” scores and accolades.
Third parties won’t give them a second thought See Ubisofts’ handling of Rayman Legends, and they’re caught in this terrible feedback loop of lack of third party support because no consoles selling/no consoles selling because lack of third party support.

Nintendo’s not perfect, but they still make fantastic games and I thought great games were what it was all about.

I fucking hate playing Devil’s Advocate for Nintendo… I own a 3DS/Wii/PS3, had a 360 that RROD’d a month into ownership, and had to replace my PS3 last year. Don’t you dare accuse me of being a fanboy for any one company, because I only stan for good fucking games.

I don’t blame Ubisoft with the handling of Rayman Legends. They were the Wii U’s biggest supporter early on and seeing the console’s sales being in the pits I don’t blame them delaying Rayman to put it on other consoles. Zombie U stayed with the console and made them no profit

The crazy thing is in the end the move didn’t help them much at all. It did bad overall on every console and sold the most on the Wii U from what I remember. Hope it doesn’t hurt Rayman in the long run.

So you got that early access Bayo2? I’m so jealous!

if you care about quality games why are you defending a system that has next to none? unless of course you’re happy with the Wii U’s library. And I never accused you of being a fanboy however, now that you mention it a fanboy as i uderstand is someone who loves something so much they are blind to the thing’s massive flaws and that seems to describe your earlier post. Nintendo fucked up hard and is paying the price, let’s hope they learn from this and step it up going forward.

By the time Smash launches Wii U will have W101, SM3DW, DKCR, SLW, and MK which is enough to persuade me to spend $300, until then I don’t really care about next gen at all.
