Very wishful thinking. Although the Wii ‘won’ this gen there were sharp drop offs near the end, and I could bet that some younger kids who were bought Wii’s in 06-08, parent’s likely ended up getting them 360’s or PS3 in later years. On top of that, the Wii was very lucky, and marketed perfectly. The WiiU not so much, and Kinect has taken over as ‘the’ motion control, so it doesnt offer anything the others dont. They will need 1080p Nintendogs, their big IP’s (Zelda, Smash, ect) and more 3rd party, and for 3rd party to make better versions of games than 360/PS3.
With the large oversights of the WiiU, I sense Nintendo becoming a software developer… Smash Bros for the PS4…Zelda for the Durango. Never thought you’d see Sonic on Nintendo in 1993…did you…?
And no I’m no Nintendo hater. I am one of many who grew up on NES, SNES, Genesis, ect, and like most, IMO, they fell off starting with the N64, and havent mattered very much since Goldeneye…up until the brief time that TVC mattered. And I did have a Wii.
Capcom and Square-Enix got people hoodwinked. 4.8 million in Resident Evil 6 sales and 3.4 million units of Tomb Raider sold in under one month = colossal failures.
Price drop is nothing but a bandaid…one that doesn’t last that long. It was a combination of the bandaid and the 1st party titles during the holiday season that did it.
Not a fan of Monster Hunter?
Edit:
If you’re talking about in certain regions then maybe if you’re talking about overall then no.
That’s Nintendo’s earnings and sales from last fiscal year. Worldwide so far for Wii U they’re at 3.45 mil. Wii and 3DS are currently pulling most of the weight of the company in terms of hardware sales.
I still think it is so funny that people can pronounce a company dead when they can survive off of simply their first party stuff.
With the rising costs of game development you are only going to see alot of reboots because that will be the only thing people will be able to afford. The big innovation this Gen is going to be in Indie gaming and it seems people are forgetting that nintendo is already making it easier for Indie devs to get on their systems.
Ninty has some good stuff coming out this year they just really need to work on their marketing because their fucking commercials make me want to turn the damn tv off.
Something as simple as building off their last commercials. “Wii would like to play” all they need to do is add something like “Would U” and then actually say it is a new nintendo console in the actual commercial.
I don’t think Nintendo will die any time soon. I do think this is going to be their last console and they’re going to be the next Sega… but with good games and not catering to furries.
I dunno if believe the 3 million units sold thing…sales counted for Jan/Feb were what, 67,000 and 58,000? That’s pretty abysmal, and they better have something big coming for the holidays, Wind Waker HD ain’t gonna cut it, and they don’t have anything right now. Depending on what MS/Sony have line-up wise at launch, Wii-U is heading towards the same fate as the Dreamcast. No GTA V? That’s gotta hurt.
If you can name some first party dreamcast titles that were system sellers then I would believe that but if you cant they are certainly not going down that path.
They are. Nobody is going to give the WiiU a second glance once the new systems are out. ,And like the GC and Wii, first party games will usually be top-notch, but not enough to move systems. I think a Smash or Zelda could move systems; IF Smash has Tekken graphics, and Zelda gets Skyrim artstyle/graphics. They need to realize who they’re selling to, they are not getting the same people that bought the Wii.
What games are selling the Wii-U right now then? Aside from Mario, and that doesn’t seem to be selling too many of them.
Look at EA, they told Sega they’d publish their sports lineup on DC if Sega sold 1 million systems by the first summer, DC sold 3 million, EA still backed out. And that’s happening on a larger scale with multiple developers. No Tomb Raider, no Bethesda, no Bioshock love, no Battlefield. No GTA V looks like a direct failure of what Nintendo was aiming for with the Wii-U, getting the “hardcore” games that will satisfy the gamers that don’t give a shit about the first Wii.
Hell BF4 is gonna be multiplatform for this gen and the next, but no Wii-U version.
Wii-U had a shot, but too many publishers realized with the Wii that it was a losing venture if you weren’t Nintendo, especially if your game had high budget. No point in competing with crap budget titles when average Wii attention span is forty minutes or so.
Just throw in Just Dance and let your kids wear themselves out until they want take a nap, then use it for Netflix. That seems to be a common fate for most Wiis…The Wii-U doesn’t seem to have many budget titles, so now they have a lineup that’s severely lacking in comparison to the 360/PS3, and it’s gonna get worse if the next gen MS/Sony systems do well out of the gate. It’s also stagnant because Nintendo has done almost nothing so far first party. 100 games announced for Wii-U, almost half of them have no release date…I don’t know what kind of signal that sends, but it’s gonna be an SOS by year end.
Why are you talking about right now. Their heavy hitters are not out yet which was my point. When those heavy hitters are out and they fix their marketing, if they are still doing bad with the system sales then people will have a point when they say all the negative shit until then people need to stop being so quick to throw them under the bus.
We working with what we have. Most people don’t give a shit about the Wii U now even makes you think they’ll care once M$ and Sony’s new console hit market? If your a Nintendo fan than sure, there’s always the first party stuff to look forward but for third party to abandon this thing so early is very damning. People don’t care to be patient with their entertainment. They move on to something else that will have what they are looking for. I can’t see a good future when it’s present is this bad.
Reminds me of when the PS3 launched. Hah man that thing sure took Sony under…oh wait.
Gamers (and people into entertainment) do change their minds at the drop of a hat which is why it’s dumb as fuck to be digging Nintendos grave already. You guys never fucking learn.
With the PS3 it’s biggest barrier was it’s price. Even with that there were some things that made a PS3 worth owning like the blu-ray player (At the time was the best in market and the cheapest), PSN being free and early models having BC. I ain’t digging Nintendo’s grave as this won’t bury them. I don’t see the Wii U ever getting past distant third with the way things are going. The eshop could be it’s saving grace if they ever get around to adding more content to it.
Which is exactly what third parties and Sony/Microsoft are doing, only difference is that it’s Nintendo and Mario killed your family and fed your mother to a pack of rabid Pikachu.
THIS WHOLE INDUSTRY IS FUCKED IF NINTENDO DIES. The third parties are too greedy and inept to try anything new. Sony and M$ are run by morons who think always on DRM and locking digital purchases to a single console is ok and we should all just "Deal With It…"
So long as everyone keeps trying to make everything “more realistic” and “immersive” the budgets will keep ballooning exponentially, meaning that eventually the only people making games will be the ones that can afford these massive budgets cough-EA-cough or sell enough DLC bullcrap cough-Capcom-cough to justify whatever shit comes out of their ass.
Hope everybody’s ready for Call of Duty 18 and Street Fighter IV ver. 2015 with two-thirds of the roster being paid-DLC… and don’t you dare lose your internet connection or have to replace your console(because Sony and Microsoft QC and manufacturing), or its SOL for you.
That’s exactly what’s coming, and everyone that wishes for the death of Nintendo is part of the problem along with these cowardly, greedy publishers and lazy, egotistical developers…
I hope you all get what you wish for. Holds onto his DS with his life
