Long time ago a read statement and it went something like “as long as there are video games, there will always be nintendo.” To tell the truth, I actually believe it to be true.
Perhaps the harsher judgement is warranted. Who can tell for sure? I only pointed out that I feel Nintendo gets blasted for a LOT more than PS360. Much of the time they get hammered for things that are ignored on other consoles or strawmanned altogether. So much Nintendo hate is basically “Waaaahahhaaaah waggle sucks why can’t I use a button waaaaaahhhhh!” type argument instead of critically thinking about things. I’m not a deluded fan boy as I recognize where Nintendo screwed up and screwed up BIG (no Pokemon MMO for one) but I feel that Nintendo tries something and only gets it 80% right the hardcore launch riots. Even if it’s something that’s never been done before. If anything Nintendo deserves praise for many of the things they’ve done right much more so then things they’ve done wrong.
Gotcha, if you look at my post I edited it to clarify that of course there was no way to guarantee what would have been done on the N64. TR and TW were just examples I threw out of games that were huge that most likely could have been done on the N64 regardless of storage medium.
No offense, but I have the side of me that’s the gameplayer and the side of me that’s a game retailer, so I have to be aware of what people are looking for, and even in a completely casual sense the Wii just doesn’t have enough to keep people interested long term. They weren’t going for any community except Nintendo fans. They didn’t really touch anyone with the Cube, they could have had GTA III but they didn’t want to tarnish the family friendly image by having their family base beating hookers to death to get their money back. That’s an easy one to point out. They’re gunning for the hardcore now because the Wii game sales are stagnant. 3rd party support might be fine until the Wii-U’s tech is outshined by the MS/Sony followups, but I don’t think the Wii-U is going to be successful enough to sustain support long term. Lots of my customers are completely surprised they’re bringing a new system out at all right now, especially in this economy.
I agree Nintendo is judged differently than Sony and MS but they should be because their business model and philosophy are completely different. Some bigwig who worked for Nintendo and MS said the former think of themself as a toy company while the latter is a game company, I think that speaks volumes for their products.
It’s interesting you use Punch Out, NMH, and Madworld to illustrate your point because the former plays literally exactly as its predecessors so I really doubt anyone who liked it would call it cheap and derivative. NMH got a ps3 release with a 72 metacritic score, and Madworld is a fucking Platinum Games product do you know how hard PG’s dick gets sucked?
AKA I completely disagree with your post! Nintendo doesn’t get a free pass on shit except from the fanboys not the rest of us who love Nintendo but aren’t dumb enough to ignore all the bullshit they pull.
that’s because nintendo the names of those other titles aren’t strong enough like Mario, etc. Smash Bros is Nintendo’s biggest game to strengthen the name of those other characters. But look at DS games, you may be surprised by what characters they bring back on that system. They’re raising kids with those characters so they can grow up and buy them on bigger consoles. Pit just made it to the big boys with his 3ds release. I got word that Nintendo’s gonna release him on the Wii U.
The Wii sales are stagnant now for many reasons. You prob know more of them than me. Don’t forget, its been 5, 6 years since the Wii released? The kids playing that were like 6, 8 10, 12 then? They grew up a bit after six years, right? They may wanna play harder versions of familiar games they’ve been raised with that older gamers like us may or may not know about right? And they may turn to the wii u this Christmas seeing that a PS4 or Xbox 720 will be nowhere in sight until a few years… right?
All the Wii U needs is Pikmin 3 and a Mario title and it’ll be the hottest item come Christmas. Maybe throw in a few third-party titles, since it sounds like many third-party developers are actually supporting this system.
Nintendo are not as strong as in the NES or even SNES days, but they are the only company that remains at the top spots for over 30 years. Of course they also used shady methods, I wont deny that.
But in the past things were even harsher for Nintendo and competition even more fierce. yet they survived while their competitors failed or abandoned the wagon (Sega, NEC, Panasonic, Atari, SNK, Commodore etc). While Microsoft and Sony are new and it is unclear whether their new consoles will not be the last.
besides even on NES days I remember the special mat available for track and field games. Nintendo aimed at that audience since then.
Every kid today has a Nintendo DS. If not all, then certainly a majority. Especially if their parents had an NES or SNES as kids.Nintendo are the only one to bridge the gap between a whole generation. unlike the rest which emotionally are not as strong to be in the heart of gamers or to be anything other than good old retro.
I say the future is bright for Nintendo. Overall video game console sales are down 25% from last year. Xbox360 is topping the other two right now, but more of that has to do with the kinnect gimmick so all the fat kids don’t even have to reach for a remote to play a movie. “Xbox! Movie!” “Xbox! Bacon Sandwich!” Mostly everyone who wants a Wii already has one. And Wii is the only console that isn’t sold at a loss. Nintendo is going to look at how Sony and Microsoft made money this last generation and will improve on it. Microsoft is going to be late coming out of the gate with there next console due to the problems they are having fighting with motorolla over patent disputes and the resources being eaten up with the windows 8 release. Sony is bleeding cash from some other divisions such as TV’s ect. and may not be able to afford to release a console. Nintendo is in a good position to release the Wii U. Even is Sony And Microsoft puts out boxes in the next year or so I won’t buy until a few years go by. RROD YLOD no thank you. Besides, Nintendo don’t give a shit about the FGC. Why would they? Most of the FGC is broke ass losers who cry if they have to pay more than $15 for a complete game. They will cry if a game is updated on a disc, they will cry if there is disc locked content, downloadable content, cry if the game isn’t exactly like the last one, will cry if it is too much like the last one, they will cry if a $5 reissue of an old game dosn’t include netcode, will cry if net code isn’t GGPO, will cry if it is GGPO, will cry it’s for 09’ers if it takes less than a week to learn a 3 hit combo…
I meant if punchout was “super boxing champion” or some generic game for ps3, and 60 bucks, nobody would have any of it. NMH was hardly a perfect game, but being good for a wii game gets it a lot of cred…and yes, platinum games are a cult for baby eaters.
Thinking about it, people don’t get burned out on the big Nintendo games because they are only released every every couple of years rather than 2 every year and a half.
Well, this thread has been a fuckton of lols from both sides, namely Lazyjosh.
I think that Nintendo is going to be fine.
It’s not like making a console for another type of gamer (which, I don’t care what you say, the Wii and DS was, the third party people just happened to say “Fuck that noise” and decided to put quality titles on the DS and Wii.)
Who cares if Nintendo caters to “casuals” (which, they do, as of now), it’s not so bad to cover a market that hasn’t been covered properly before, (Hence Microsoft and Sony freaking out and trying to compete with the Kinect and Move).
If they want to keep handing out slowly but surely stagnating “original IPs”, and mix that with a fuckton of casual games like Wii sports or other shit, let em, it’s not looking any brighter or darker for them, they’re going in a new direction, they’re having fun, and the lead designer of Zelda doesn’t even consider video games as an art form, so fuck what he says.
Nintendo releasing sequels to their big franchises once every few years definitely contributes to their hype, no one will deny that but I think it’s their quality and polish that helps them retain their rep more then anything else. They found formulas that gamers enjoyed enough to make them not care that they haven’t changed much throughout the generations, hell some could and have said that it’s because they haven’t changed that they’re consistently good.
Most of the time any main entry in the Metroid, Mario, Zelda, etc franchises are guaranteed to be pretty fuckin good, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say this is a universal mindset gamers have.
The following is a video of a NSMBW custom level. Note how much cooler it is than most of NSMBW proper.

This is a big part of the reason Nintendo has fallen off my mental pedestal it used to be firmly rooted to. Poorly made games.
Play the whole MovieBob-esque “Western games are just angry marines” card if you like; it’s objectively wrong. Even then, some of those angry marine games are subject to ridiculous levels of playtesting and scrutiny.
That statement I made earlier, where I said there’s probably more thought in a single Halo hallway than most of whatever Nintendo game you care to mention? I wasn’t just blowing smoke:

Just a small glimpse into Bungie’s process.
Hell, that’s a big divide between Japanese and non-Japanese devs: this willingness to not only talk about the process, but also actively showcase it (within reason). Sure you occasionally hear stories about how Shigeru Miyamoto “kidnaps” employees to playtest a basic mechanical prototype of a new game, and I think it’s dope he does that, because it combines game testing with kidnapping. But you hear little else, and when a designer has too much clout like Miyamoto, you end up with controllers tailored to his tastes (GC’s giant A button, the Wiimote).
Is it sad that I already know the “but the Wii has other controllers” counterargument despite having talked about that already? The part where I ranted about how they have all these controllers yet force control schemes on players?
Bah, I’m rambling. Final thought: I suspect Lazyjosh2 is actually someone who used to be on SRK before, said shit he shouldn’t have, got banned, and couldn’t help but find his way back. Just throwing that out there.
Where did I say any of that, you stupid fuck? I listed a bunch of NIntendo games you illiterate chimp.
Don’t come back here until you learn how to fucking read.
This is where difference of opinion matters greatly. The level you showed had forced scrolling. I think forced scrolling is a horrible idea since the first game to do it ever, means that that level will take however long it takes and that’s that so in that level you just stick to the right of the screen throwing bob-ombs to the left before they blow up as the level drags on and on and on making sure you don’t fall in the lava. I’m sure many custom NSMB levels are better than the ones Nintendo made. I’m sure custom Halo maps would sometimes be considered superior than what Bungie made. This sword cuts both ways.
You like the level which is great. Play it and have as much fun as you like cuz that’s what games are for.
Is it me or did I hear the sound effect for the Ultra Meter being full when I read RC’s post?
I take it you didn’t play Sonic and the Black Knight.
The difference between all those the other gaming consoles is that they have a gamepad as the default controller, not a battery operated remote-control with a motion sensor on it. It’s stupid that I have to put batteries into my wiimote just to navigate through the menus when my GC controller is plugged into the console. My sensor bar is busted so I have to use the classic controller attachment just to control the cursor on the screen. So many games, even the ports, use the wiimote gimmick when it’s not necessary. I ended up trading in my copy of SvR09 for the Wii cause I couldn’t even use a classic controller, when the Xbox/PS3 version use a standard Xbox/PS3 pad. It’s silly. That’d be like the Capcom forcing players to use the Kinect for their next FG title.
this made me lol at rl
Ohohohoho… no. I did not. Odds are that game would have blown regardless of the controls.
I understand this. I hope they fix some of these issues before the U comes out. At the end of the day unless Nintendo forced the developer to use waggle or other Wiimote functions in a game then argument falls on the developer. If some one can show me some evidence that Nintendo does this then my argument is of course moot and I may jump on the Nintendo hate train instead of staying fairly neutral. Also, it is important to note that there are many Wii/DS titles that use the Wiimote/touchscreen HORRIBLY just so I don’t sound too biased.
But how do you guys think Nintendo would do in the next generation of consoles? I’m all for arguing opinions on how nintendo has done recently but none of you seem to be budging on your positions and this thread has painfully missed the point because of it.
