Current favorite(s) is UT3/CoD4. All time favorite has to be The Ultimate Doom.
First I’ve ever played was Wolfenstein 3D in a Radio Shack when I was about four or five. Only got one chance to play it cause there was always some asshole cop sitting there playing it EVERY TIME I went to that store, and never let me have a turn.
Love? Half Life 1/2, cause in terms of gameplay and immersion, they’re unbeatable.
Hate? Halo 3. Overrated, crappy game that only appeals to console kiddies and noobs that never/refuse to play anything better.
Needs more attention? UT3. Why such a great game is getting such low attention escapes me. Best DM shooter to date.
Oh, btw, Serious Sam 2 is pretty awesome if you want a nice run n’ gun.
DN3D is gonna be a downloadable game on XBox Live I guess? I don’t have an Xbox so it means nothing to me but I read it somewhere and figured some of you would like to know.
I remember back in the olden days of FPSing, I never used a mouse. Never really needed to in the DOOM days. I never adapted until I got Quake 3 and realized I pretty much had to. Trying to dick around with the Page Up and Page Down keys wasn’t cutting it. Took me awhile but I can’t imagine playing any other way now. Which always brings me into arguments, mostly with Halo players…
Keys+mouse or game controller?
I personally can’t stand controllers. Though Goldeneye worked out well on it.
I guess my favorite FPS is probably Halo for the sole reason that it’s balls fucking easy and I can just pick it up and play it when I don’t want to think at all. I haven’t played 3 yet, need to beat 2.
Absolutely no FPS ever topped Doom / Doom 2 for me.
Ever. That game just rocked me to the core so damn hard that I just flat out stop playing everything after that (save Duke Nukem, but I just went back to Doom anyway).
The amount of time I spent with that game was absurd. I can’t even quantify at this point.
I absolutely love Team Fortress 2. I think that’s a godsend. I can’t wait for the day when all the classes have their unlocks. It’s going to be awesome. I really can’t stand Halo. Console shooters don’t do it for me, I guess.
Pretty much sums up why UT3 sucks. If you’ve played UT2004, you’ll know that it’s much faster pace than UT3. In 2004, you could double jump almost an entire floor (height). Like on the map Rankin, you could dash up the ramp and then jump to reach the 2nd floor. In UT3, you would have to friggin double jump to get onto a knee-high platform. The new vehicles and the grapple beam is cool though.
I hope you’re not suggesting that h2 doesn’t take any thinking to play at all because high level play in h2 requires teamwork and knowledge of how to approach choke points (like the towers in midship) just like in most fps’s.
While I’m on the topic I like h3 a lot but the melee system is COMPLETE ASS. How the fuck did bungie miss this or at the very least not patch it yet? It’s bullshit how 2 people can clock each other at the same time and kill each other let alone how different weapons do varying amounts of clock damage.
I don’t really consider purely single player fps’s as fps’s, lol. It’s like, when I think FPS I think quake, cs, unreal, rtcw, but never Bioshock, Undying or Metroid Prime (for example). I guess in my eyes, for an fps to be a GOOD fps, it HAS to have decent MP.
I also don’t dig console fps much. The only one I really enjoyed was Goldeneye, but really, I need me a mouse and a keyboard to be able to play an fps, especially if I want to take it seriously.
Also, it makes me sad to see that lately (for a while now) the FPS genre is kinda like a race for who can make the most complex game in terms of features. I mean: vehicles, multiple teams, lots of gadgets, super explosions, super powers/abilities, radars, maps, missions, etc. At the same time, gameplay is dumbed and slowed down such that anyone can pick the game up and get some frags from the get-go. I guess it’s good in a way, but I really miss the simple but hardcore games like quake2, quake3, older unreal games (even though I didn’t play those much) where you needed to really practice not only general FPS skills, but game-specific stuff (quake 2 double jumps/strafe jumps, quake3 strafe jumps, ut2k4 dodges/jumps) or else you were pretty much toast.
Or maybe I was just spoiled by quake, or something. Am I the only one here who feels this way?
Most underrated fps ever is Unreal2: The Liandri Conflict this game is as deep and fun to play as it is unique from any other fps. It’s the same super fast paced fps of other unreal games combined with the ability to switch to third person mode any time you want and while your in third person you can switch from having guns or your melee weapons. Think about an unreal game with the ability to go devil may cry on your opponent whenever.
While in third person melee mode you can use special powers (each character has a unique set of powers like super speed, flight, power, invisibility, super jump, etc) there are probably over a 100 special abilities in the game. In this mode you can also deflect gunshots back to your opponent by pressing the l trigger a split second before it hits kinda like a parry. but if you time it wrong you’re vulnerable to a free attack for a second.
Between fps mode, third person mode, third person melee mode, and all the unique special powers each character has (their are ALOT of powers) this is by far the deepest fps ever made and it all feels natural nothing is gimmicky. This is quite possibly the best fps ever created but because it was released only on xbox a few months before 360 launched it didn’t get any attention. The game IS backwards compatible so BUY IT NOW hopefully I can get a few of yall into it and we can get some games in.
