Force of Three- The Nova Teambuilding Thread

i’m interested in this team, though i would need to learn nova and akuma. how would you game plan for this team? would you still use horizontal arrows, or change it due to tatsu? does nova get good combo extensions from either, starting with a fly/unfly bnb?

Horizontal arrows from Taskmaster are probably the best assist for Nova. Reason being is that, because they come out a little slow, you can use your cent rushes to force blocking while arrows hit. Something like, call Taskmaster then Cent Rush L, arrows hit, apply mixup. It’s very good. Nova benefits so much from Taskmaster. Akuma also is good because it forces blocking, but its only usable close range. He also helps extend his combos. Having access to a full screen assist is very important for Nova so stick with h arrows.

Ive been teaching myself Felicia recently and one of the 2 main teams I came up with in doing so is Nova Felicia Task. Main idea is probably pretty obvious, but long range the standard Task arrow stuff, but closer up when you know you can connect a grounded box jump jH (hit or block irrelevant), Buckler is just free! Im surprised this hadn’t been used by anyone already (that we know of). Felicia is good enough that it’s not one of those “yeah, but then you have to use Felicia” type downsides.

Anyway, what do you guys think of the concept? Even if one were to answer, “yeah, but you have to be able to connect a jH while theyre on the ground,” to that I’d say:

– with Nova that’s not that hard, really. And if they keep up-backing to avoid it, well, you guys play Nova. You know how not-quite-the-solution that is. lol

– you’ve still got Task arrows, so it’s not like avoiding the buckler kills the team’s strategy. In fact if anything it just gives us free air grabs

Im gonna mess with Nova Vergil Task too for the hell of it, which i know is our good friend Azarius’ team (order inverted). But got-DAYUM is the Felicia shit a blast! If anyone has the inclination to try it, lemme know what you think!

Edit: this used to be a post with me frantically trying to describe a video I came across but couldnt remember enough about to find, and was asking for help. I ended up finding it and figure might as well post it up here since it’s equal parts relevant and awesome! I posted earlier Id been intending to mess w/ Nova Vergil Task tonight, and intended to re-watch this before doing so. Enjoy!

LOL!

I’ve been going through a little bit of a team crisis but slowly narrowing down a main team to use. I enjoying Nova’s playstyle a lot and Vergil is one of my favorite characters in general due to DMC3, so I wanted to try to make teams based around them somehow.

The first team I’ve been using is Captain America (Shield Slash)/Nova (Centurion Rush)/Vergil (Rapid Slash). I figured Centurion Rush would be best for Cap’s Cartwheel mixups and Rapid Slash can help both Cap and Nova play a little bit of keepaway if necessary. Vergil with XF3 and Devil Trigger is pretty ridiculous as anchor since he has his own mixups with Round Trip and access to meter. The only thing bothering me about this team is that perhaps it doesn’t have that great of synergy, but maybe I’m just overthinking things.

The other team I’ve been experimenting with is Vergil (Rapid Slash)/Wesker (Samurai Edge)/Nova (Centurion Rush). With this team, I can use Centurion Rush for teleport mixups/unblockables setups for Vergil and Samurai Edge for combo extensions. If Vergil goes down, Wesker still has Centurion Rush for his own teleport/unblockable shenanigans and can build meter for Nova to use. I also figured Nova with XF3 as anchor can help negate his red life loss/usage. I just wasn’t too sure how good of an anchor Nova could be.

If anyone has used any kind of variations of these teams or perhaps could give some advice or suggest some adjustments I should make; it’d be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Is the Nova/Doom raw tag off a throw character specific? I can’t seem to get it on most normal size characters, both f.H and S whiff after the s.M

I tried the nova doom hard tag thing on every member of the cast, and it worked on everyone except
firebrand, Arthur, Frank west , Zero, Morrigan, Tron, Trish , Joe, Viper, Ammy, Phoenix, She hulk, Spiderman, Modok, Iron man, Wolverine, Iron fist, Rocket raccoon, Dr strange

It is. However, on the characters that the s.M doesn’t work on you’ll have to, air dash down with Nova after the airthrow and do something like j.M while falling so when you raw tag you have enough time to actually do s.H. That works on everyone.

oh wow so u can use s.H and it works on every1? im gonna have 2 try this

Yup. If you airdash down, you also have enough time to doomhop over and do a st.M, but it’s kinda hard. I don’t play Doom so my movement with him is ass, but you can totally do it if you practice.

With Dante it’s kinda similar. if you do the raw tag combo midscreen, you have to ADD j.H or you won’t have enough time to do a dash-in volcano.

Height also matters. If you’re a bit above jump height when you air throw in the corner and ADD J H, you can actually hard tag in frank (who has like a 40ish frame tag in animation) and hit with a tools H (27 frames) and combo off it in 3-5. Fantastic damage, but grossly impractical since you need frank leveled, Nova on point and a higher air throw. It’s a pity though, Frank will ToD off the follow up easy.

It’s not impractical, just incredibly situational. To be honest though, I’ve ran this shell for like 10 months now and I don’t think I’ve ever found myself in a situation to make use of it lol. Usually when I have Frank leveled I let him do the work until he’s too low or actually dies.

and here it goes again. Nova Taskmaster Spencer

Do you know, should it work universally with Felicia Toy Touch instead of Doom? I actually never thought to try the tactic, but given I now play a Nova Felicia (Task) team, I might as well do this if I can!

Also, unrelated: Does Nova have any game vs characters/strategies that stay high in the air and run away most of the match? I was using one of my non-Nova teams vs a friend who plays a very fly-all-over-the-place Magneto, and is now dabbling in MorriDoom. I really want to fight him with the aforementioned Nova Felicia Task, but that session now has me feeling like I have to learn Strider or put Doom on every team to compete. Ideas Ive had but havent tried are:

-Energy Javelin. Between ease of avoidance and the fact Soul Fist/Magnetic Blasts will make them disappear, this cant be the solution

-sj into Human Rocket Punch. I never used this move outside of an air combo, so dunno if this has the speed or range to tag someone camping in the skies, but seems worth a shot on paper

-qcb super (forget the name). Not sure if this tracks enough to hit sj height, but was envisioning hitting up for the followup hits since, at the very least, it should cut through the fireballs.

-Switching Task’s assist to vertical arrows. Not willing to do this, but including it for completeness lol

-Replacing Task with Strider. This is essentially “giving up,” and Id really rather not. BUT, that said, Vajra is very good for both Nova and Felicia (and others obv), and a great overall anchor. I just have no experience w/ him nor Vajra.

Thoughts?

I feel that Nova has a difficult time with characters that are primarily airborne. Not quite sure what to do about MorriDoom, but for the other aerially inclined characters, I back off, set up a H Pulse, and throw Javelins. You could try using M Pulse (with red health), but there’d be some guessing involved. Occasionally, super-jump Rocket Punches can catch them off guard, but it’s a risky thing to do. Try watching some of the vids of Moons against Chris G.

I love Nova with Strider, but you still need another assist. Strider alone doesn’t work I’ve found. You need a pinning assist. Nova has options like energy javelin, but yeah Mags is kinda difficult if he has missiles and knows the matchup. Start Felicia vs problematic match-ups maybe? Strider definitely helps vs airborne opponents. It makes the Zero match-up 5-5 I feel. MorriDoom is kind of a thing in itself and everyone has problems vs that match-up. You just need to pressure Mag and he needs to respect the fact that you can just catapult j.H if he tries to disruptor you. He can however, super that on reaction. Just get more experience for the match-up I’d say and understand that you have Speed Tackle super. If he gets reckless you can maybe Speed Tackle and catch both of them. After any Speed Tackle hit you can x-factor, airdash up, j.H, j.S to confirm on everyone.

Doesn’t Felicia’s Rolling Buckler act as a horizontal assist and also sets up an unblockable setup for Nova?

Fenrir: hell yeah! I mean, really, its not adequate as a horizontal in how u likely mean it. Its not really a lockdown or pinning assist, at least not a very good one. That’s why I have Task in the back for the true ‘horizontal assist.’ That said, it DOES create unblockables. Great ones. Easy ones. Why is no one besides me running buckler-nova?? Lol I mean, how hard is it to make someone block a jH? Lol

Marvelo: thanks, that makes a lot of sense. And I’ve been playing some felicia doom strider, mostly in an effort to teach myself strider (who I’m lovin). Like u said, it’ll come down to experience. And with this team, its worth it! (Nova felicia task, that is) the gameplan is basically to use task arrows as my primary assist to set up mixups and/or air grabs. Thanks to you reminding me about raw tag after air grab, every air grab = full unscaled felicia combo.

Then once I think I’ve arrows-nova’d them to the point where I can do a box jump without them jumping, I call buckler and combo them free. Versus mortal players, setting this up is pretty cake. And the dhc synergy on this team is excellent too. PowerOTNF xx rolling super xx up arrows generally = g’night. Then also when felicia finds herself fighting, she gets an overhead assist in addition to arrows which are as good for her as they are for nova (ie. Very)

Its just a blast to play and crazy powerful I think, at least on paper. Tho I’ve been demolishing xbl with it. And the stipulation on buckler being “you have to use felicia” is wayyyyyy less bad than, say, daggers or unibeam or lariat. What do you, as our resident “pro” player (and moons, where tf is that guy!?), think?

Zewo: you’re absolutely right. Ill def be tryin some of those ideas. Never thought of M pulse. I haven’t gotten to watch that vid yet but I’m about to before bed. Thanks!

Sottle: what up, brotha!? You haven’t posted in a few days, but you always come thru with the creative ideas and sick tech. What do you think of NFT? Even if you hate the idea, still always wanna hear your thoughts on nova teams.

Hey everyone, I’ve been hitting UMVC3 hardcore lately, to the point where it’s my main game over SSF4. I would dabble with Nova from time to time and now that I’ve been getting serious about the game I want to learn how to optimize this character. I’ve been messing around with team setups like Nova, Vergil, Rocket Raccoon or Nova, Dormamu, RR or Nova, Dorm, Wesker. I even worked on running him on a Phoenix team. Long story short I like Nova a lot. He’s fucking awesome! What assists are the best for him? Is he best on point, 2nd for TAC, or anchor? I’ve been practicing combos and what not, but now I want to take it a step further.
