Flying While Intoxicated: The MvC3 Iron Man thread

it is not just you. although i’m working on some combos that use assists + repulsor blast to extend it with mediocre results. i’ll let you know if i get anything out of that haha

Repulsor Blast is really interesting in that sense, it can be used effectively both for zoning and to combo into, light version though. On the other hand I haven’t found much use for Unibeam in combos plus it’s relatively mediocre against other beams and hell yeah BladeOfJustice Queens get the money!

Unibeam is pretty good for finishing combos into Proton Cannon if you call an assist before your OTG smart bombs. Multi hitting beams will always do a sizeable chunk at the end of a combo.

I don’t even think we need to worry about combos with ironman as much as what to do. With most other characters what you’re supposed to do is obvious.

Zero = RUsh that ass down, (high priority)
Wolverine = Rush that ass down, (assists + left/right mixups and safe pressure)
Dormammu = Zone, etc

But with Ironman I’m not sure what to do. If I’m playing a good rush down person Uni beam them afar and anticipate them jumping over it then repulser blast spreading them. Maybe Ironmans best use is luring people into repulsar blast than proton cannoning them and switching to a nice DHC? These tricky fly combos are weird it doesn’t seem like they work on all characters, or over entire screen.

I think that’s the beauty of Iron Man, there’s no right way to play him unless against specific match-ups.

On another note I hate the fact that the actual Proton Cannon only hits on it’s first frame, so many times does someone get through the beam and stands right through the cannon itself.

I know you’re not supposed to play rushdown with him, as his tools are subpar for this purpose.

Can’t cancel dash until 11th frame (which also means no wavedash), trijump isn’t has fast as Magneto’s or Storm’s and ground normals are lackluster (tremendously unsafe, like zoning character unsafe, -10+, and have poor range).

However, I feel like his strongest tools are his j.H and air Smart Bombs to cover approaches. Mastery of j.H and hit confirmming out of them, specially in the air, is the way to go I believe, nothing can beat j.H outside of armored moves.

His ground normals have very good range. His 7 frame cr.m is ridiculous and connects into S from further than you might think.

He can always plink dash to get around faster.

I feel mastering his tri-dash j.M is equally important as well. Not as ranged as j.H and the hitbox is relative to his kick unlike j.H which the Power Shot has no hitbox but it is extremely fast and can be easily combo’d afterwards.

I think j.H, tri-dash j.M are both equally important. You can pretty much air dash j.H from full screen and hits most char. Unfortunately, you can’t get much out of that hit, but it’s a very safe get in with the right assist. As far as slow dashing, I find sjc. tri-dash is as fast as Storm, slower then Magnus tho.

What do you mean? I though plink dash only worked as an option select between dash and a throw, I fail to see how that lets him move faster around.

No plink dashing lets your character dash across the stage faster than crouch canceling.

That doesn’t make sense as Iron Man still won’t be able to cancel until the 11th frame. So unless I’m missing something again this still makes his wavedash non-existent/poor (with Ryu, IM, Dormammu and Hulk being the only ones who can’t cancel their dashes right away, I believe).

He can still wavedash to close the distance, just have to tri-dash the last one to start the high low mixup. If you always hit your dash on the 12th frame, it’s 5 dashes per second, that’s more what i’ve seen people r doing with any other characters already.

Plink dashing is slightly faster because you don’t have to pull down then put the stick back in neutral.

His dash doesn’t really affect his movement so much as it does his offense anyway.

My best iron man moments

  • Trijump M combos on blocking opponents
  • J.H double jump anti air combos into cannon and DHC
  • light unibeam into iron avenger
  • repulsar blast spread, then rush down enemy on wake up
  • repulsar blast into cannon

worst moments are usually me getting rushed down, ironman needs to have space between his enemies since his normals are all long and don’t cross up.

WOW there is NOT a lot of activity in here. How do you people feel like Iron Man should be played? You think it’s entirely matchup dependent? Seems like he’s a poking type character to me like a vega or something, he’s got normals that are great, quick, have good range, but you have to be patient in order to land those combos it seems

what do you guys think?

He is like Ky Kiske from guilty gear, true a jack of all trades master of none. I can rush down and play keep away, I do both depending on who I am fighting. He just can’t do either well enough to rely on it to win. He needs the help of his assists.

I do find he has good normals, but I would say his air normals are really good, for me so far at least. Specifically, jumping :m::h::s: to create spacing from you and your opponent, very useful and may open up combo options if your opponent gets staggered by them on the ground. I wish his jumping :h: and :s: were still considered partially projectiles though, I believe they were in mvc2, correct me if I’m wrong.

His rapid jab is good, but his cr.m doesn’t push him close enough to his opponent as it could after several cr.l attacks. Unibeam is pretty lack luster compared to other projectiles, repulsor blast is a pretty good air keep away, and repulsor spread really makes the move much more safe.

I just wish his launcher wasn’t so shitty. That needs to either get a completely different animation for sending the opponent up, increase it’s range, make it more safe on block, or stop him from moving forward when he uses it.

can’t you cancel launcher into flight of it wiffs?

It cancels into something? That would help a lot if there were true.

Oh, what’s the frame data on standing :h:? Is it punishable, how negative is ti on block? Thanks in advance.

Pretty much sums up my frustration with Iron Man, his launcher is wack as shit. One whiff is a HUGE deal.
