I think your devil’s advocate would be a lot more appreciated if the issue this thread is trying to raise awareness of wasn’t already a central value in many of the community members minds.
As for the outbursts, the shit talk and many other negative things that can occur during these events, such is the nature of this business. While FLAG is well within its rights to exist, it just seems to make very little sense.
Seems like this thread has indicated that a lot of people support the “stop whining” standard of behavior. Which is a good one. What exactly is the problem?
So, then, what are some things you want to see FLAG do, then? I mean, it’s just an open group that wants to encourage fair behavior. I just need some ideas. We can’t ban people from tournaments because we’re not organizers nor are we affiliated with EVO. Right now, it’s just an open Facebook group where people can come, join, and give some shout-outs to good behavior and to some not-so-good behavior.
My father is a retired narcotics officer, and he used to always say to me, “A community can only have as much crime as it will tolerate.” Well, that applies, I feel, to this as well.

Well if it’s such a central value to so much of the community I really don’t see how it makes little sense to establish some sort conduct or rules in regards to it … do you? I mean by your own words they’re rules that the entire community already hold as a core principle, so why not have them posted or written down? edit: please don’t mention nazis again
What is the problem with making any minority group feel unwelcome? Gee well I dunno.
It’s hilarious to see threads like this on the internet, because people are just so fearful to talk about the real topic they diffuse things into old topics which they can throw old arguments at. “No of course you should ban all trash talk and this is why” when the OP only suggested trash talk which is based around discrimination.
I understand if people find the OP cheesy, but the ideas represented really shouldn’t elicit some of the passive aggressive replies in this thread. It boils down to being mature, getting along and having fun. I wish this happened in majors more often. Instead there’s been drama since Final Round’s major straight to PowerUp.
The “passive aggressive” replies are because the OP only serves to make things sound worse than they actually are. You wouldn’t really know that looking from the outside in though.
Carry on with the negativity and confirmation bias.
hey, don’t get me wrong, i luv trash talk, but only between friends, or at least people that know each other.
as for trash talking a total complete stranger…
hell no.
we all know what thats gonna lead to.
and if i’m at a tourney, and while i’m there i see two dudes getting up, yelling at each and going fisticuffs…i’m packin’ my shit up, getting my jacket, and leaving,…cuz i don’t need/want to get in any possibility of getting into trouble with la guardia ever again.
never again.
i’ve learned from my stupid foolish mistakes of my youth…and i aintz repeating 'em. i’ll make sure of that by refusing be a part of an atmosphere/enviornment that might breed needless trouble.
i’m not for people having some “-please pass the grey poupon-” type manners at tourneys…just well behaved enough that they don’t make a scene. cuz scenes can lead to even bigger scenes till shit gets out of hand.
i just wanna play peeps and have good time…and not get somehow tossed into some “uh-oh, somebody’s gonna set it off” or “look!, homboy’s havin a fit over there like curly from the 3 stooges! he’s running in circles layin’ on the ground and the whole 9!” type scenarios. nah man.
nah.
4 that i’ll stay home.
feel me?
Its probably a good intention but no thanks
you want a group of people to start discussing the integrity of the community?
whats gonna prevent them from start trying to enforce rules in tournaments in the name of "integrity"
Fuck that, this aint smash, I dont support the idea
What’s wrong with discussing the integrity of the community? Is this taboo?
I’m not sure where you got the idea that this is some coup d’état. He just wants to set an example because he thinks it would be a great help in the community, and wants to find like-minded people that could help or add to this concept.
integrity, ah the good ole days when people with integrity would make house rules for how to play a game. Because anything else is unsportsman like.
I win a round I have to forfeit the next round because thats what a gentleman would do. Oh sorry I dizzied you there eh? I’ll wait across the screen so you can get out of being dizzy because a gentleman wouldn’t hit someone whose dizzy? Combos? Not in my gentleman game, we all know that gentlemen don’t combo others because it’d be unfair to the guy getting comboed. Tick Throws? Get outta here with that, gentlemen don’t throw other people, especially if I set it up so its difficult for you to get avoid it.
gentlemen rules will be the 3rd coming of scrubs.
BTW what was wrong with calling “burnyourbra” a black bitch? Shes black, and if she came off as a bitch then shes a bitch. Guy could have called her a ****** or a porchmonkey, would you have prefered that? If the guy was a sexist pig that couldn’t believe he got beat by a girl then he needs to level up and leave the insults at the door.
I dont think we need to, its not like its an issue with the whole fighting game community. There’s small issues like these everywhere, but we certainly dont need to form a group with a code of conduct to adress them. More than anything I dont want to see SRK become anything like the smash community.
This wouldn’t make us like the Smash community though. Smash players encourage/accept splitting the pots and loads of unsavory things. They are the opposite of what this thread is about.
Point is that a “code of conduct” will only give scrubs more weapons to wine… plz no…
Notice the OP joined SRK in 2010 and its already trying to talk to about a code of conduct…
Quite the situation then, because the OP thinks it needs to be discussed, as do others. The purpose is not to “address” integrity, it’s to set an example as to what values should be prioritized in a competitive environment.
At the same time, it should be determined what these values should be, and I think everyone could probably give insight into this.
Probably the first thing that needs to get out of the way is this. Everyone should be on the same page of what is implied by integrity and how it’s applied in the context of the fighting game community. It should be assumed that everyone is playing to win in a competitive environment, if not then they have an entirely separate issue. This is not about setting rules.
