Fighting Games: Bottom of the Barrel

Primal Rage (the original arcade version, at least) isn’t that bad of a game. It is reasonably balanced (Chaos is a notch above everyone else, but not gamebreaking, and Vertigo is a notch below everyone, but not useless. Everyone else is about even), has no real infinites, and has all of the usual fighting game mechanics (chains, links, juggling, footsies, zoning, rushdown, etc.). It may have a silly premise (Monkeys fighting Dinosaurs for the control of URTH!!!) and outdated aesthetics, but at least it’s playable.

I still think Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22 is the worst fighter I’ve ever played, even though I honestly didn’t play it that much.

I can’t be the only one who thought Angel Eyes looked fucking hype in those videos :amazed:

I dunno, was The Duel really that bad? I mean I only played it for a short while, but it didn’t seem bottom of the barrel bad exactly.
And Zero Divide, what’s not to like about a super slow Tekken with robots? They actually made two sequels I think.

I had this as a kid, together with Soul Blade/Edge. Even though SB is obviously way superior, I thought DW1 was pretty decent. Had a lot of fun with it.

Now, what was the name of that game for the N64 that let you make your own fighter?
And those games that Team Best From Now did youtube videos about. The old DC heroes one (no overheads, no blockstun? 1P and 2P moves being different? lol) and Pretty Fighter

But of the ones I’ve actually played, it’s Windy x Windam like the guy above mentioned. Terrible, terrible game. My impression was that anyone could find an easy infinite within minutes, and that both animation and controls were awful.

Rise of the Robots should be no fucking contest. At least one can have stupid stupid fun wit Shaq Fu, of all things.
Who doesn’t love a mummy and a half-dead sorcerer who can RETRACT THEIR OWN GADDAMN PROJECTILES ON HIT OR MISS.

I’d say probably the worst fighting game I’ve ever played is (Insert DBZ game).
I mean, when I was younger I DID enjoy the living hell out of them, but I know they’re terrible now.
Still pretty fun though.

Also, hi, I’m new to Shoryuken, this is my first post.
. . . I main Ken . . .
(runs away from imminent mob)

It should be noted that I enjoy collecting bad fighting games, if only for the reactions. There’s also using them as fodder for random matches.

One of the more obscure stinkers in my collection is Street Combat for the SNES. Now follow me close here, because this gets really stupid. The game is actually a port of one of the first Ranma 1/2 fighting games, but when it was brought over to the US, all the Ranma elements were removed and replaced. So a sub-standard license game has been turned into a bottom shelf generic fighter. Wow. As for the game itself, well it’s one of those fighters that has a jump button… and it just goes downhill from there.

I didn’t find Clayfighter very good tbh.

war gods and dark rift was pretty fucking terrible.

For modern examples, try One Must Fall Battlegrounds

It’s a badly executed fighting game, unfortunately it’s changed to over-the-shoulder

wow…this game looks like BALLS cover in vaseline with puke on it.

Me either, I never understood the appeal and always steered clear of it. I hated every minute of that game. Sadly that and Ballz were two of my friends’ favourites o_O

Has Chō Aniki Bakuretsu Rantō Hen been mentioned yet?

oh god they have a fighting game!? i’ve only played the 2d shooter

Yes they do. You should see the chick/ship with half-naked dancing men on her deck.

well i see where the last few 3d mk games came from

Lol, I remember this game. Playing it back on the first Xbox. The stage were you fight in the arcade was cool, other then that yea the game was so so. Lol they also got a guy in the game that looks just like Jet Li lmao.

Edit :

This needs to be remade RIGHT NOW!

I bought Tao Feng. It was alright. I liked the setting and the characters quite a bit actually. Coming from John Tobias given that the MKs after he left (pre-MK9) were pretty much terrible it could have been much worse. And yes, I marked for Divine Fist as we finally got a Jet Li tribute character in a fighter.

And here’s my latest discovery…

Shortly after Street Fighter II came out there was a deluge of horrible, horrible fighting games. I think most of the worst ones are probably forgotten. The Genesis got a bunch after Street Fighter II came out on the SNES, but before “Special Champion Edition” came out. I remember one in particular where the longer you charged a move, the better it got. I got pretty good with a dragon man and the next to last boss was this insanely tough six-armed Indian god looking dude. Anybody remember this thing?

Yeah, I also remember seeing this as a kid at an amusement park, and I got immediately turned off from how bad it was. Yeah, that’s right: an elementary school kid saw insane amounts of blood and gore, and said, “No, thanks.” Lo and behold, I now have a PCB of it (It came with my NBA Jam arcade cab, so don’t think I actually WANTED it…)

Also, as a kid, I refused to buy SF2T or SSF2 for the SNES because I already bought SF2… so I ended up buying a ton of other fighting games. Lemme tell ya… that was the wrong choice. Primal Rage (Arcade was cheesy fun, but the SNES port was god awful), Justice League Task Force, Ranma 1/2, Rise of the Robots… good Lord, did I play some shit when I was a kid.

Some other fighters that stick out in my mind that didn’t totally suck but definitely depressed me were both on the Saturn: Ninku and Waku Waku 7. There was also Battle Monsters on the Saturn, which felt more like a fighting game directed by Ed Wood. I’d call it a ‘bad-but-fun’ fighter. Personally, I wouldn’t count the Saturn version of SF: The Movie as a bad game, actually. Cheesy as hell, sure, but the game felt like SF2T to me.

On the PS2, there was Dream Mix TV: World Fighters, Battle Stadium D.O.N and Neon Genesis Evangelion: Battle Orchestra. Dream Mix and Battle Orchestra were at least a bit of fun in my eyes, though - DON, not so much.

Three games. First, Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Battle 22.

I don’t care what any nostalgia person tells you, this game absolutely sucked ass. You see those graphics? That’s late gen PSX.

Terrible, terrible game. I don’t know how they got the okay to sell this game. It wasn’t even complete and it was glaringly obvious it wasn’t. It looks like the game was made in a week. This game came out on the PS2 and it looked this bad. The game’s BGM would randomly turn off in the middle of a match for no reason. Terrible animation, and broken characters. Toguro’s bullet flick thing. That should be enough to anyone that’s played this game. There was absolutely no balance in this game whatsoever and characters were free to do whatever the hell they wanted. Only redeeming quality is some of the music was from the series, and they used the “thank you for waking me up” intro. Too bad the music barely lasted through the match.

Just look at this shit:

And IIRC this game went for retail price at the time. Yeah. I can’t even put into words how bad it was. It’s really baffling.

Not as bad as the others, but DBZ Budokai 1 was bad just for this intro:

Terrible gameplay too. It took them three tries to get this game right, which is why it’s not as bad. At least they learned from their mistakes and created the masterpiece known as Dragonball Z Budokai 3. The best DBZ game and one of my favorite games of all time.
