FGD Lounge: for general fighting game discussions that aren't thread worthy

^^have you played Blazeblue or GG?

The original idea of Guilty Gear (from the PS1 version) was a weapons based fighting game. Even Potemkin had huge metallic gun hands. Millia and Zato used parts of themselves or a parasitic creature to attack their opponents also (hair, Eddie). It technically started out that way, but later games branched off into other design types.

It’s obvious from looking at the old PS1 game that it was stylistically heavily inspired by Samurai Showdown. The way the blood sprays, the zooming camera and the emphasis on weapons is very Sam Sho. For whatever reason, the later XX games removed the blood. Sucks seeing Eddie’s command grab with no huge gush of blood anymore. I’m sure Xrd will stay having no blood also.

Arena Fighter is what I’ve seen it classified as. I’d still say it’s a fighter, just not in the traditional sense. You need to learn stepping/dashing, health meters, the in fighting as well as the projectile game. The untraditional parts are the camera view, controls (it plays fine on a controller), and the openess of the game.

The first Virtual On was awesome, especially the OST (dat bass), but VO:OT was where the game hit it’s peak. Improved melee, dashing and speed. Like all Sega games the skill ceiling is high, but still enjoyable at all levels.

There’s talk about it coming back for it’s 20th anniversary.

This is an awesome strategy guide complete with video demonstrations.

I just figured a weapon fighter would place some sort of emphasis on the weapons in relation to the actual game mechanics. SC lets you choose your weapon(in some game modes), and makes use of different parries. The original Dynasty Warriors had a a thing where you could lock weapons. Samurai Showdown had a mechanic where you could drop your weapon. Deadliest Warrior uses shields and such. Guilty Gear XX and BlazBlue don’t use any weapon mechanicsm, it’s purely aesthetic.

Weapon mechanics, wtf are you talking about? lol. The majority of the cast use weapons therefore its a weapon based game. that’s it.

If we were to go with your definition of what a weapon based game is then Samurai Showdown and The Last Blade aren’t weapon based game… and how exactly does dropping your weapon place any emphasis on the weapon in relation to the actual game mechanics? because if you drop your weapon you obviously wont be able to use it.
In Soul Calibur you choose your weapon by picking the character who uses that particular weapon, just like in every other weapon based fighting game. Which game modes are you specifically talking about?.. please don’t tell me its creation mode, lol.

The SC mode I was referring to is(I think) Extra VS battle.

If “weapon fighter” refers to any game where most of the characters use weapons, then so be it. But I think we should call GG and BB shirt fighters instead, since most of the characters are wearing a shirt. Actually, more characters are wearing a shirt than have a weapon, so that should be the category those fighters fall into from now on.

Man, you are awefuly stupid

And you don’t deserve to be in this forum if you are going to throw around insults like that.

Man you’re awfully good at never contributing to conversations unless it’s the hentai, Battle Fantasia, or anime thread.

BTW Battle Fantasia is a great game, everyone play it.

Blazblue is a weapons based fighter.
Terumi, hazama, valk, azrael, bullet, tao, they all use weapons you see.

And as for guilty gear, technically you could qualify it as a weapons fighter, even though a good 2-4 characters don’t use the, but even then, weapons in guilty gear are mere aesthetic choice as they have no relevancy to the actual game the way it would in Soul Calibur, Samurai Showdown, and last blade for example. Its more like an anime where a good amount of characters happen to use weapons, then a game where everyone lives and dies by the sword. Its why characters like Slayer and Potemkin can exist fighting characters like Sol and Ky.

Seems kind of useless to have a label that means different things in different games though. It’s kind of like, if we were to lump Tekken and SF4 together because they both use 3D models.

“awefuly”

Bitch

Has anyone played the first iteration of GG or Tekken?

Tager is a weapon

I’ve played GG1 a bit.

You forgot the metal thread and the mafia games nigga :coffee:

It was my main game for years, i only left it because GGXX#R
The game can be whack at times, but fuck i loved playing it for hours with my brother and friends

someone who insults others and doesn’t contribute to conversations shouldn’t accuse another poster of doing the exact same thing.

You think!?.. its pointless giving an opinion on a game you haven’t played.

Now you’ve lost me.

What are you talking about? Because I can’t remember the exact name of the game mode from a game I haven’t played in 10 years, I’m not allowed to have an opinion about it? Get real, dude.

Even with the internet at your disposal you cant even find the name of a mode that you claim is such an integral part of Soul Calibur’s game play mechanic. Not only that, you don’t know anything about the other games that you mentioned.

We’ll call GG and BB shirt based fighters when the characters use their shirts to attack their opponents… do you ever think before you type?

There are 6-8 characters in BB that fight with their fists. How the fuck does that make it a weapons based fighter?

Guilty Gear is a weapons based fighter in the absolute broadest sense. Its identity can be salvaged without it. You think they can just add Jam, Slayer, and Justice to the game if it was truly “weapons based.” Its a game where characters just happen to use weapons, but that isn’t what its identity is based on, at least not anymore. They can add as many fist fighting characters as they want and no one would bat an eye because thats not the games purpose. Try adding more than 1 fist fighting character in a game like soul calibur, samurai showdown, or last blade and see the reception it gets

I don’t even know why the fuck anyone thinks blazeblue is weapons based. The original game can have 4/5 of the cast taken up by people who don’t use weapons. I forgot bang and arakune.
