To me EC fatalities felt more realistic because they interacted with the stage. When you think about it, it does makes sense for that science guy to be thrown into the spinning fan, or for that barbarian guy to be eaten by a dinosaur or for that Xavier guy to burned at the stake. It just made sense. MK’s fatalities are cool too but are, for the most part, way over the top and felt like they were trying to hard to make it as gruesome as can be. To me, it’s not about how gruesome it is. It’s about the way that they die that leaves a lasting impact.
New element of play that could take me to the next level, in addition to fundamentals and smart play, simply fucking with my opponents rhythm helps tremendously with your play.
Soul Calibur 2
Last Blade 2
Samurai Shodown 4
Bushido Blade
Soul Blade
Guilty Gear (1, since X it’s not really a weapon fighter)
Last Bronx
I give up and those aren’t in any order. Didn’t want to include more than one from any given series. Soul series gets 2 because Soul Blade was so different to the Calibur games.
Yeah it was cool cuz they gave more personality to the characters. Like MK fatalities are cool and all, but there’s nothing like being drive by shot mobsters with Tommy guns, then as you’re lying on the floor dying they run by and gun you down one more time. Stuff like that back in 92/3 was pretty epic. Xavier’s stage still remains the spookiest stage I’ve seen in a fighting game. It just has this eerie magic that I haven’t seen captured by another game. Especially with the Exorcist style theme.
Never played the Sega CD version but they basically upped the fatalities to the next level since it was a next gen game. They put an emphasis on realism at the time with stuff like being impaled by the front of a boat and your they put specific detail into the intestines falling out of the body and stuff. Hardcore as hell for back then.
Damn sucks, now it makes me more sad that new EC is never ever happening. Killer Instinct and Bloody Roar will definitely suffice though. Didn’t think either of those games were coming back (although BR is still in rumor state).
IMO, best “fatalities” were GG1 Destroy moves. They were the only “kill” moves that acted as if you actually killed your opponent. Get it to hit and that was it, no round two, no nothing.
The funniest part about them was that there was a breaker for them. So you’d always have to fight with the opponent to land them. The CPU would attempt to counter it regularly.
I was thinking about GG series but wasn’t too sure. Not sure where I’d put it. Great games, but I’m not a fan of meters anymore as once was.
I was think about the Virtual On series as well. This would also get into the Gundam games. I consider those fighters. Was thinking about getting a PS3 for the new one Gundam game coming out but wasn’t too sure.
Virtual On was a badass series that was way ahead of its time… Isn’t Gundam the most popular fighter in Japan? how are games like this even classified? I guess they are fighting game but they also have similarities with fps’s.
I was under the impression that the weapons in both of those games aren’t even part of the game mechanics, besides added reach. The “weapon based” title is pretty trivial when it’s an aesthetic choice. Or am I missing something?
