FGD Lounge: for general fighting game discussions that aren't thread worthy

Numbers.

There could be a point brought up that, Smash has it’s own tournaments anyways with high numbers (?).

I’m more surprised by Pokken, you could of had something more fun to watch, bring back an older game or something.

But no, fucking Pokken.

Im a happy camper with marvel 3 around. The game gets too much flak just for showing up at EVO and is very underrated nowadays imo. Getting annoyed of smash eating up spots. I dont hate seeing it, but i get so sick of people sucking melee’s dick like no tomorrow.

I have no real impression of pokken but i hope this means for EVO 2017 we will see JoJo:EoH on main stage :^)

Hey those who are very experinced with third strike. What is it about the game that makes people feel like it’s so hard or unforgiving to casual players? Because from what I’ve played it feels really simple to play at a basic level. Pokes to good damage so you don’t really need combos. Just fundamentals can carry you a long way. I think what makes it unforgiving in some people’s eyes is the parry mechanic. Once someone who has mastered that mechanic or even has a basic mastery of it enters the fray. They have a huge edge over average players who aren’t good with it or don’t even utilize it. For example I fought two hugo players yesterday in Third Strike on PS3. The first one was decent but I was able to poke him with lil trouble. Then I went up against this Hugo who’s parry game was on point. It was a nightmare. I was almost scarred to push buttons and he bodied me.

As for the EVO line up. Most of the games were to be expected. Although I will say Guilty Gear seems to be the Anime Fighter that will be a mainstay at EVO for a bit. So good for the GG community. They earned it. Two Smash games and Pokken…I’ll try to keep an open mind about Pokken. Hmm i wonder at this rate will EVO within the next five years will become a Nintendo dominated event. Like 3 Smash titles, Pokken, people make an argument for competitive pokemon and get the handheld games in there. And just for appearances to say EVO is still FGC. They keep one Street Fighter game around.

I wish I could figure out how to post gifs. There is another one I saw on Twitter that had me in tears.

Smash Mom mini vans hold more players than pizza delivery '93 hatchback civics driven by fighting game players.

If the community hadnt thrown a bitch fit about the ports for ST and MVC2, this wouldnt be happening.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY REMOVED THE GLITCH?
Dude it was banned anyway
ITS NOT ARCADE PERFECT THO

Because they buy into the whole “it’s old it must be hard” mentality.

Or they try to jump in an do shit and just get beat up by people with good fundamentals.

Yeah the later sounds right. In Third strike fundamentals really go a long way. Where as in Street Fighter 4 for you can just learn a set play or Vortex character and get by with that against average players.

It originally did have one giant fuck up, you couldn’t block AHVB after the super flash which made the thing virtually unblockable. Think it was doing some silly shit like going across the screen in 1 frame. It was still a major fuck up by the community. The ST/HDR split, while understandable, really hurt more than it helped. HDR wasn’t a bad game by itself, it just wasn’t ST. Should’ve been treating it as the next gen of SF2 and using it to hook people in but instead it got murdered.

I liked HDR too. Eh fuck it, I just love me some SF2 regardless of the version.

Unblockable AHVB? What port was that? PS2?

So Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be free for PS Plus subscribers in February. Hopefully this brings more people in the lobby and fill up another place besides same ol’ Junes. How about we fill up Iwatodai Dorm?

HDR’s mistake was not having a Japanese arcade release. Had it gotten one, then it might have stood a chance.

I wish it had old backgrounds. Old sprite + new background combination is hideous and the old sprites are shaded more pleasantly.

Evo 2016 line up is suspect but I’ll be lieing if said it was good marketing call. Their alot of new games coming out so these game being at tournament with high viewership will no doubt push sales, and more than likely these developers are helping sponsor the tournament. While I wish more fan favorite game got shot, I like to think that if evo continues to exoand. thus their ability to host more games.

Also as feel their other more accomplished games, I admit games such as KoF, Melty/UNIEl, AH3/N+B just wont have strong showing due to their not being well known. This is why pokken got in with little to no showing. My cocern for Evo is seeing strong matches entertaining matches with people who know how to play the game but so many of these game are just going to be too fresh and new for people grasp in that limited time frame.

Digital release before the patch. IIRC Mike Z was the one who find it and went “Shit is borked, fam”.

Cause even after it was unceremoniously tossed out of Evo after 2007 the community continues to grow lmfao.
getting and carrying a GameCube isn’t hard hell my first weekly this past month (on the other side of town) someone practically gave me one so I could practice melee again!

While I love playing and watching the games you just mentioned
Those communities are extremely niche players that are harder to find and mostly isolated. Despite all the barking about melee for years it’s self sufficient. Its a phenomenon most other older game communities don’t experience.

Want those games back? Grow that community, somehow find a way to be more inviting

Why the hostility? As to why they get two games: They show up, and the two scenes are not at all the same ones. There’s little else to it. Both Smash games broke 1700 last year, and the scenes don’t overlap much - 500 players or so. So both alone bring a 1000-1200 people who wouldn’t come otherwise, bigger than the size of the GGXrd tournament, plus 500 people extra. This is one of the reasons Ultra was dropped - basically everyone who plays Ultra will play SFV. This is not the case for Melee and Smash 4, just like many people really love ST and hate 3S or love 3S and just can’t be bothered to play anything else.

The scenes keep growing because they focus on growing themselves, and present themselves well. I don’t watch Smash 4, not interested in it, but Melee consistently has some of the best commentary even at relatively random events. That’s what it takes. Building local scenes, supporting your game. Those people haul CRTs and gamecubes and Wiis all over the place because they love their game.

As one small example, as far as I’ve understood the Gutter Trash events at London’s Heart of Gaming are doing well because they promote themselves, they grow the local 3S scene, and they present themselves nicely. There’s little else to it. 3S is one of those games that’d actually have potential, too - OE is a decent enough port so there’s no super pressing need for a supergun if you want to hold an event, and anyone with a modern stick or pad can play. You just have to hold events and build the scene. But you know what? People are going to play SFV. Ultimately, that’s what it boils down to. They’ll play SFV and not show up for 3S.

Another small example: VSav doesn’t have many consistent players on Fightcade. Yet it had online weeklies on GGPO. Why? Because people showed up is why. They actually played their game at an event consistently, and we’re talking freaking VSav here. Niche, weird, inhuman clunk. But fun. And people kept at it because of that.

You don’t get main stage by demanding it. You get main stage by deserving it. The Smash communities have constantly shown to deserve it.

I think a lot of hostility is derived from many (most?) Smash players only play Smash. They had their own tourneys, ran on their own equipment, and were separate. Now they somehow feel like they deserve a spot in a long running series that they took little to no part in building, and have relatively little in common with. Smash is an invasive species, they are Kudzu. Smash doesn’t belong at EVO, not because of the argument that “Smash is not a fighting game” regardless of how you feel about that, it’s because Smash players are not fighting game players, they’re Smash players. I went to Frosty Faustings last weekend, Smash had its own ballroom and I didn’t recognize seeing any of those players in any of the main ballrooms, only in the hallways and concessions. It feels like they’re muscling in on street cred while being from a cushy suburb.
