Fei Long with TE stick

I’m a Fei main and I’ve just got my TE stick less than a month ago. I was playing quite well on the X-box controller, but I knew that if I really wanted to get better and be more competitive, I’d have to start playing on a stick.

Let me tell you, the adjustment has been frustrating as I expected. I’ve been trying to make a point to practice everyday to improve my execution and timing witch have been completely off since switching. It’s only been less than a month so I’m hoping after a few more months I’ll be be back the level I was with the controller and hopefully better.

I have to say this though, even just after less than a month, I can already notice that that playing with a stick is so much more accurate and fluid than on the crappy Xbox d-pad. The one thing that really still bugs me is that I can pull off 100 rekkas in a row in training mode, but then when it comes to actual matches, I still end up throwing out normals when trying to rekka. Its so hard to implement stuff you’ve been practicing in training into the live matches.

I’m not gonna give up on the stick with Fei, I refuse to play with a dpad anymore becasue I know it will just make me wanna switch back even though I’m getting my ass handed to me 90% of the time.

Man… you have no idea, i want to go back to my fightpad so bad at times its ridiculous. It got to the point i had to switch to my pad to beat the hell out of this guy online for sending me a “you suck” message and since i feel actual battle training is better than practice mode i get frustrated alot when playing. i got the Marvel vs Capcom TE stick for x-mas as a gift so i’ve been trying to get better with it but its hard and aggrevating. I can’t consistently do rekkas whick is a big part of fei’s game. I’ve found myself shying away from fei and using a charge character which i seem to be better with on the stick and starting to like, lol M.Bison anyway I’ve been contemplating get a Octagon gate to see if it helps but some of you guys think otherwise. It just sucks when i can’t do a HK>Super anymore or a Cs HP>3xRekkas. Funny thing is, i can use this damn stick with any other fighting game, Marvel vs Capcom 2, SF2HDRemix, Tekken 6, Blazblue, or VF5…no problems at all.

i recently switched to a modded SE from a saturn pad, took me about a month of casual practice, i would have sf4 in the background all the time as i was on the computer and i would sporadically enter training mode and bust out a few dashes, rekkas, cw’s,fks until i got comfortable doin them all quickly and precisely ( 3x rekkas were the toughest for me, my hand didnt wanna go back to neutral and do the qcf motion after the first one) i then moved onto easy hp>rekka/FK , crlp>rekka cancels until i got comfy with those, then i moved onto full on bnb combos. if can already tell ive gotten better with the stick than i have ever been on the pad. my best advice would be to practice but not to frustrate yourself, and always try and end a session on a good note, like a succesful bnb, also player matches since there generally more relaxed, and the more relaxed the better you play.

i find Fei on stick harder than it is on pad. I can input everything more quickly and accurately on pad than i could on stick. Only thing that still gets me occasionally is the CW input where i throw out a fw. HK or a jump RH, doesnt happen much but when it does i eat a combo. Dont know why they didnt just make it a regular half circle motion similar to Abels command throw.

I dunno. I don’t think you can place the blame on the TE sticks. I have a fight pad, a HRAP and a TE, and they are all the same really. I’ve been getting into Fei the past few weeks here and I’ve been mostly using the TE actually.

I currently main Vega, but am looking at making the switch to Fei and have been using training mode alot to get his inputs down, yesterday i switched my square gate out for an octagonal and instead of missing ever other move, i hit most all his commands with about 85% accuracy. I would 100% recommend the oct gate for your TE stick(its easy to put on) makes non charge characters much more viable and charge characters still work well too, especially for guys like rog who can mix up his dash straights and dash lows better with a forward and d/f locking postion

I also switched to an octo. I’ve been practicing with the square for some time and definitely seeing improvements but the octo just gets better results for me. In the end that’s what matters.

ahh cool someone in the same boat :bgrin:

I made a post in another thread but I guess this is the discussion I was looking for.
Im having serious issues since switching to the TE from a pad in January, but its not execution and timing thats killing me, for some reason Ive been concentrating on the stick so much the basics have abandoned me.

so Im falling victim to simple punish cross up attempts, easily escapable tick throw attempts, and for some strange reason since moving to stick my friends have noticed I dont jump :wtf:
so the air has suddenly become free for my opponents. I cant punish them when they jump and when I should jump I dont.

Im hoping Im not creating silly habits Ive never had, but thats what it feels like. My ability to land what I want when I want has improved hugely with the stick (like landing a hit confirm, and following the combo through), but my ability to move and react has plummited. (Im getting trapped by jumping opponents)

Just be patient. At least you’re not making the transition with Gen as your main. If I could do it, you can too! It takes a couple of months but just keep at it.

Huge respect for keeping Gen through the change
I was a Gen player but the stick was too big of a change after being so used to changing stance with triggers. I guess I might be hoping for too much too soon.

I also started getting into Chun-Li around that time too. I feel like that taught me a lot. Maybe try something like that?

I’m just getting into this game and I’m thinking of buying the SE fightstick and then modding it and adding sanwa parts to it. But I’ve never a fightstick or fightpad before, so I’m wondering what would be the best for Fei Long. And if its a fighstick do I need a square gate or a octagonal gate. I know many of Fei’s moves are 1/4 circles. Your response would be appreciated.

I’ve been trying to learn stick for the hell of it. I noticed that the Fightpads I bought from Madcatz were costing me a pretty penny to replace continually, and there’s no way in hell that I’ll go back to the 360 pad :shake:

I’m using a Hori EX2 (mostly because it’s a cheap stick). I’ve found that pressing the buttons is giving me hand cramps. I typically use my 3 longest fingers to rest on the punch buttons with my thumb on LK. I think having such mushy buttons is hurting my hands too. How do you guys usually set your hands? Would a TE stick help with the cramping?

I’m also having trouble with doing Rekkas facing on the right side and doing HP XX Rekkas in general. On the pad I could bust these out no sweat, but it seems like the HP won’t cancel out in time when I do the Rekka on the stick. Any tips on these two problems?

It’s just something that’ll come with time. There’s generally more ‘work’ in executing things on a stick. It’s more apparent in a game like Tekken, where movement is more key with wave dashes and such; it’s a lot easier on pad until you get used to the sticks travel.

Only advice about the Rekkas is try to be more deliberate with your wrist movement to get the consistency back, then work on speed of execution.

I used to use a pad with Fei and switched over to TE stick with Fei awhile back. One of the things I recently did to help my rekka inputs was do a spring mod to increase the resistance on the stick. (it goes back to neutral faster). What it also does is require small minimal rotation of the stick (you’re not hitting the sides at all, if ever). it helps to cancel the st.hp and doing rekkas in a more controlled state.

I feel a bigger difference and more tighter control on the rekkas now.

Edit: btw, I hardly ever move my wrist and use my fingers mostly to do the rekka motions. Actually, all movement is done with my fingers and seldom using my wrist. The only downfall I face is that I do get tired out faster due to the resistance. But that’s going to just take time to get used to.

I used my PS3 pad the other night and the only thing I could do better was Rekka like a champ, TE still messes me up sometimes, tho its 10x better for everything else

Sometimes (when i’m nervous or just rushing out) I pull out Rekkas with a 360x3 motion  it works!

Someone doesn’t get enough vitamin P and the exercises that come with it :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry, someone had to turn this thread naughty

master the pad and save $$$.

I rest my hands in a very similar way that youre describing. Try lifting your wrist while youre playing, so its not resting in the case of the stick, its the same idea that while your typing on a keyboard, to lift your wrists up while you type, this prevents cramping. If you are doing that, then its probably just your hands/fingers not used to doing such strenuous activity. As far as the hp cancle into rekkas, the first time I got a stick it took me a while before I was able to do it with any great regularity, and it is going to take some time to get 100% on. Also if your weaker side is the right, it maybe the motion of the stick that is preventing you from doing the rekkas. It’s frustrating I know, but in time it will pay off greatly as using a stick (in my opinion) generally makes things easier.

Note: I also started on a hori ex-2 and the main problem I had with it was it was sooooooo light weight. It would move and I’d have to readjust in the middle of a fight. A TE is considerably heavier compared to the EX-2, and if you are like me having that little hori moving around on you really screws up your execution, which could also be causing some problems for you. I bought a TE and now my problem is the damn 4th buttons, lol but that can easily be fixed with some plugs!
