Fei Long Video Thread

seeing your vid against leader 1 (dictator) made me think that there were some opportunities for CW juggles after some of your AAs or air to air jumps. sucks you missed the FADC to CW - ultra! that would have been awesome

about the juggles, some maybe possible if you dash forward, others might have just worked after landing from a jump or a FK. ill have to try to incorporate that into my game.

any particular reason you seem to do cr.lp on that boxers wake up than a cr.lk? i’m thinking you might be missing some confirmable hits there if they try to stand up.

Yea I was really looking to trap the Rog with Rekkas, but you really have a point there… I guess I was more concerned abt spacing for the cancel than getting a bnb

Apologies if this is old. If anyone remembers that great Fei on Nicovideo that was posted months ago, here’s another vid of some great Fei(s). Not sure if it’s the same guy, I think the previous one used purple pants.

Nice use of Tenshin on Honda’s Wakeup! Does it beat Sumo Splash?

at about 3:45 into this vid vs sagat, fei did a 7 hit combo, 2 hits off ex cw, s.fp x ex cw x s.fp…I thought s.fp ex cw didn’t work on sagat at all.

I think in the tenshin thread, they cover some meaty setups after knockdowns and throws. Not sure if this one is covered or not. Maybe it beat’s those but not EX. Dunno.

@RPGv2, I can confirm a little later, but I think the EX CW is comboable after s.HP on some characters.

I know ex cw after s.hp is only good against abel and seth. That’s why it was weird seeing it on sagat.

Tested it out in training mode, couldn’t get it to combo at all.

also counter hit setup of cr. short, stand close strong

Yep : Backthrow, empty jump, non-EX tenshin is a meaty tenshin set up, the opponent can’t mash jabs or tech throw.

Nice. But he also did a normal Tenshin after an EX Rekka knockdown against Honda’s quick getup! (@2:18 in the Honda vid)

Maybe it’s a “manual” meaty tenshin. The advantage of meaty tenshin set up is that it’s a chain of moves and it’s guaranteed that the tenshin in the end is a meaty one.
A “manual” meaty tenshin is very hard to time so i think the honda just blocked on wake up.

Here’s that Fei against Balrog. 23 mins. I love his st.LPs, cr.mp, super. I have trouble getting that but he pulls it out often. Tense stuff, I loved watching this.

after a HK Flamekick, do f + mk then throw.

that fei has some interesting set-ups.

I finally have a video online, and it’s me vs a Balrog, which is a terrible matchup for me.

If you guys could critique this, and maybe give me a few tips, that would be great. Aside from, you know, tech throws.

Oh, and the sound you hear during the first match is my friend’s stick that I was using. It has SF2 sounds set to play when you hit buttons, and Sagat sounds bound to EX buttons (He’s a Sagat player).

You were too stationary…it reminded me of Bubblan’s Fei Long where you were too afraid to do anything. Again, I stress the importance of CW in this matchup. Learn to use it to beat pokes. Also try using J. LK more as an ambiguous crossup…I find it’s much more effective. Mix it up w/ J. MP to confuse your foe. Your Focus attack could’ve landed several times but instead you kept dashing out of it and putting yourself in a defensive position…which is fine as long as you don’t break under pressure. The numerous tick throws he landed on you showed me that you panic under pressure so you should’ve been more offensive. Try neutral jump HK as well as it beats a lot of Rog’s attacks.

  1. Opened with a Rekka: Why? You misjudged the range, in the first round. In the second you were lucky that he didn’t block, neutral jump, EX punch, Headbutt, or sweep you out. Yea you got the Rekka in, but was it worth it given Balrog’s options? Maybe use that shit against a different character, but too risky against Rog here.

  2. Nice pokes, but it seemed like you were aiming for passive aggression instead of winning the match. If you only use medium/heavy normals for pokes, you’re severely limiting damage potential and forcing Rog out of your range. Use Rekka at the right range, or work your way in with CW/Focus. Fei can be deadly up close, and not so much at a further distance.

  3. Random Flame Kicks are bad. I know its fun to watch the other person burn, but best to save the kicks for anti-air or when you at least have FADC to protect yourself. You got a couple randoms in, and whiffed an EX. EX kicks are always great for anti-air (which you should’ve did more of btw). Against Rog, the invincibility on a normal Flame Kick should be enough as combo breakers.

  4. More Rekka when you push yourself just out of sweep range and when you need to punish. Once you get the Rog into the frame of mind for Blocking, take that opportunity to add chip damage. With cr.MP you can get him in a nice frame trap on a successful hit.

  5. Block jump-ins if you can’t get the flame kick. You ate a bunch of those.

  6. Just tell yourself “No more back dash.” It didn’t really accomplish anything, or at least the way you used it. Back dash basically invites Rog to charge in with a punch and take you out during your recovery.

  7. When you have two blocks of meter and your opponent is standing right on top of you, do Flame Kick> FADC (not a general rule, just better than EX CW).

I just want to also add that you didn’t punish some headbutts properly. you just get a cr.mp or w/e when you could’ve easily gotten a full combo of 200 something damage punish. Remember, close standing fierce comes out in 4 frames, iirc.

You also scored a knockdown but didn’t do anything after it. Against balrog, every knockdown is an opportunity for damage, particularly against balrog since there’s not much he can do. When I knock a boxer down, I get all up in that ass. Boxer can’t do shit against meaty low attacks on wake-up, headbutt just sails over and you get a free combo. So there’s really no risk to press the advantage after an untechable knockdown on him.

what Simplekiss said.

I usually do a cl.hp>mk fk to punish headbutts. Though I have a nasty habit of doing cl.mp instead, which actually comes out one frame slower.

Yeah, I noticed I kept going to the c.mp/c.mk instead of a real punishment combo that scores knockdown a lot the second time I watched the video. c.mpx2 just isn’t a good punishment combo.

And you’re saying that c.mk will duck me under headbutts on wakeup? Are you sure?

The reason I opened the 2nd round with lp.rekka was because I was pretty sure he was going to open with a lp rush punch, so I was almost 100% positive my 7 frame rekka would stuff his 10 frame rushpunch. But, yeah, it was probably not a good idea to use it the other rounds after that. I think I was just trying to use it to keep him back at the start of the round after that.

I’m also fairly certain that in the last round when I backed away, that was the worst possible thing I could have done in that situation. Focus attacks…I just seem to be having trouble letting go of the buttons before I dash lately. I know I totally screwed up on teching. I really just can’t do it anymore, even if I am relaxed or focused. I just need to get used to teching again, so I’m probably going to watch some match videos so I can try to look for tick throw attempts again.

I think I messed up the timing on a nj.HK about 30 seconds in? I did try to go for it though.

Also, I just transferred over onto stick, so even if I didn’t comment on anything you guys mentioned, it’s probably because its stuff that I used to do but lost somewhere along the way. But, I’m definitely reading it, and I’m going to try all of it and to incorporate it into my playstyle. I’ve also never beaten this guy before, so I was nervous as hell. He had to get past 2 people I had much more of a chance against to get to me, so I was pretty much just praying that he would get randomed out so I’d have a chance. Oh well, least I’m finally trying to make some headway in this matchup instead of just saying “fuck it.” I’m actually still having trouble chaining rekkas fully, and I know I can’t get the FADC into anything correctly (although I hardly used this on pad before, I am trying to use it more now. I usually try to store up Super and just use EX CW or EX Shien if I think I can spare the meter. I guess I shouldn’t be using EX Shien though? I just like the 250 damage, and with a cl.fp it’s 300, soo…). I’m sure once I’m more confident on stick, and start using all these tactics, new or returning to them, that I’ll do much better next match I have to play someone I’ve never beaten before. Especially if it’s this guy.

using cr.mk against headbutt is the same deal as electricity. You just need to do it at max range. Our cr.mk can actually stuff quite a few moves.
But if you think he’s gonna headbutt, i’d just block and punish instead though. But yea, he can’t do much about this, maybe except ex dashes, in fact, watch out of the ex overhead punch.

Try using hk/ex cw for wake up if you plan to escape. Just don’t get too predictable with this as it can be punished. I’ve met some guy who can pull out cr.lp>cr.lp>ex punch>cr.lp>cr.lp>ex punch>cr.lp>cr.lp>headhutt>ultra kinda consistantly. (maybe not exactly like that but very close I believe.)

Using lp.rekka for an opening isn’t that a good idea in this match up I’d say. It could be headbutted, or lose to dash or turnaway punches. Not to mention the ex punches in the second round.

I also agree cw can be very useful in this match up, especially for getting in. Just don’t be too obvious. Use more f.mk to force him lose charge and mix in with cross up afterwards. (sounds good on paper eh?)

We all had problems in this match up and we all got better. Just practice more. There’s a high chance you know Balrog more than your opponent knows FeiLong after all.
