Feel my Power! The Nova Video Thread

hello nova players, this is my team synergy video, maybe this will help in some way new players, enjoy =]

^ that vid looks pretty much exactly the same as a X-23/Nova vid I posted six months ago. you are even on the same stage

hereā€™s a short new clip of a Viper/Nova team combo, to get around a limitation of TACs that affects Nova. after TAC you should be able to do assisted extensions but nopeā€¦ nova j.S has so much grounded recovery that still counts as ā€œTAC stateā€ in which you canā€™t call assists so the normal OTG cent rush M stuff doesnā€™t work. so why not this

iā€™m still trying to figure out how to extend after the last cent rush M. hitstun scaling is so bad cent rush H and human rocket M wonā€™t fully connect. you have alraedy done about 1.1 mil at that point anywayā€¦ might as well just do gravemetric pulse and call it a day

have you tried human rocket H or cent L after the last cent M? or maybe even human rocket H before the cent M since your combo hasnt used a wall bounce.

Iā€™m sure you guys already know about this. But I decided to make a video anyways. Nova can raw tag in another character after a corner airthrow for unscaled damage. I also included a few resets.

Already knew about it, but unfortunately for my team Frank takes too damn long to pose and can only do snapshot + Hyper on the tag :(. Wouldā€™ve LOVED to get a combo that could level Frank + actually do damage for the Nova/Frank shell, but alas :(.

Awesome stuff. Too bad my team canā€™t abuse this unless Frank is level 3 or 4 but Iā€™m gonna have to keep that in mind!

I tried him. You can probably do something with the right assist. I tried to demonstrate that with Dorm+ Akuma to OTG>Relaunch.

Something along the lines of Snapshot + Tatsu or the like.

Nova/Frank/RR. Centurion M and Log Trap take waaaaaaay too long. Did you test Bear Trap or Spitfire + assist for RR? If I learned boulder loop I might be able to build a bar and do that for leveling instead. (I can test it myself, just wasnā€™t wondering if you tinkered with RR and well).

Didnā€™t test the raccoon at all.

I know you can get a few more frames byt doing an ADD after the air throw, but it usually didnā€™t make a difference.

Iron Man didnā€™t work, which made me sad, because he is probably one of the best raw tag characters.

that works anywhere on screen, not just in the cornerā€¦ with Viper at least. add~j.M so you hit the ground really fast and you have all the time you need, you can even dash in after the tag in pose to get closer.
nova & viper can do just under 1 mil off the throw

If youā€™re high enough in the air when you do the reset I think you can get a few more by doing ADD + H, I was tinkering with that. If you mistime though you hit the opponent on the way down.

RR doesnā€™t work, the rag tag puts him too far away to have any chance with spitfire, and bear trap takes too long. Frank can use snapshot but itā€™s hard to get the assist call, and with the hitstun decay that applies you canā€™t even do some of level 1 BnBs to get to 4 (for my team at least) even in X factor. Sadness.

So Iā€™ve been using Nova/Dante/Strider for a few months now to take advantage of the raw tag trick with Dante, while also having access to Strider, but I feel that weasel shot just isnā€™t as good as an assist as arrows are for Nova. So Iā€™m thinking of using Nova/Taskmaster/Vergil, since that team has awesome synergy, but I canā€™t find a way to utilize the raw tag trick with Vergil. Maybe its due to my inexperience with Vergil. Have you tried it with him? Raw tagging Vergil for sword loops will be incredibly powerful if someone can get it to work.

it depends on you third character. With Vergil/strider, you can do Spiral>3C+vajra~C> spiral loop

Cause I screwed up the first time.

Ok, so I attended a small 8-man tournament today and while I feel my performance was absolutely lacking when comparing to how I play regularly (them tournament nerves, man), I still want you guys to comment on my matches if you can bear through the portuguese resets and overall fairly weak level. http://www.twitch.tv/garudapsn/b/322421505 my first match is at 0:12:20 (ignore the names and results, they were a bit slow with uploading those, Iā€™m ā€œBlueā€, first player.) and my second one is at 1:11:00 (Iā€™m the guy in the blue shirt, but not that you care). I realise some of the MAJOR fuck-ups that I did, especially in my second match. Hilariously failed a Hawkeye air magic series and then the otg to kill wesker (I swear I donā€™t know how that happened, I have to work on my nerves) and then on the final match, that absolutely desperation tactic of an anti-air hyper with Frank when I could have simply punished the teleport. But hey, further feedback on my Nova play is welcome, just please donā€™t cringe too much at the failures  thanks!

Do you want the abridged version of critique, or the lengthy, no holds barred critique?

edit screw it, Iā€™m giving the whole critique while itā€™s on my brain/watching this lol.

1 Your first match shows why I fundamentally donā€™t like hawkeye on your team. If Nova dies, you have no backup plan to level Frank. greyhound offers no way for multiple snapshots, and thereā€™s no DHC combination that allows a higher ranked level up. Youā€™re relying on either Nova or bust. I tried that, found it too unstable for my liking, and make sure my third member had options for leveling Frank, both mid combo and via THCs

2 Use shopping cart. Yes, its scaling sucks. Yes, it means you canā€™t get a double snapshot for a 5 Frank. But your goal is to get Frank leveled by any means necessary; extra damage and level 5 VS 4 are great perks, but sacrificing them to get Frank to at least 4 is worth it. Get frank leveled first, worry about damage and such later. Hawkeye should be used from 2/3rds screen or further, Shopping cart for closer up. Will help novaā€™s neutral game by leaps and bounds.

3 Learn your anti-phoenix tech with Frank. snapping in is good, but if you have your tech down you can just get Frank leveled and deal with her that way. Especially since you can do up/down TACs for snapshots as opposed to DHC since theyā€™ll always guard side.

4 donā€™t let wolverine bully you so much. Rocket punch in the air if you need to escape, use shopping cart to push him away, and when Frankā€™s cornered just barrel roll out (isntead of calling hawkeye and getting happy birthdayā€™d).

5 Gravimetric pulse H is one of Novaā€™s best, underrated tools. i donā€™t think I saw you put up once. Itā€™s not just for runaway/zoning either; every time you have a pulse out, youā€™re controlling space. Thatā€™s huge. Incorporate it

6 Ease off that L/M xx Barrel roll + hawkeye stuff. There is no (emphasis on the word ā€œnoā€) way for Frank to leave himself at enough advantage to ever make barrel roll safe in a blockstring. Period. Iā€™ve tested it. youā€™re trying to make it safe with an assist which is smart, but since hit circles in this game are very generous on left/right, if heā€™s too close youā€™ll both get hit, like wesker did in your second set.

7 Do a roundhouse >> dash back >> snapshot instead of a Tools M for your second snapshot after DHCing into Frank. If the opponent neutral techs and mashes on light they can punish you with your current setup.

8 Blue Light Special last hit of million dollars. Barrel roll jumping gunshot Weskers. Didnā€™t need to take so many risks in the last match of the last set, coulda beat Wesker on neutral game.

Ok, some great advice there but a few points I feel I need to contest or at least analyse better.

1- Iā€™ve tried having vergil instead of Hawkeye (with Frank switched to anchor, basically wong team but with Nova), but Hawkeyeā€™s assist is really just too useful for both Nova and Frank. Plus, if Nova dies early without leveling Frank up, I usually do one of two things: either spend XF2 to get Frank to level 4 by himself like I did in a few of my matches (and failed in another one, derp) or simply DHC into Hawkeye to kill the other character and then let Hawkeye with Frank assist fight it out. Itā€™s actually a fairly strong duo so if I get a hit with Hawkeye then, Iā€™ll simply TAC into Frank (people forget about that all the time) to get him to level 4 (since heā€™s already got about 16 PP from the previous combo). Iā€™ve tried lots of people and I simply canā€™t find anyone who fits so smoothly with these two as Hawkeye.

2- Thatā€™s actually something Iā€™ve been trying to work on but should I just go balls to the walls with this assist? I mean it seems to work just like Akumaā€™s for getting in and pseudo-GTFO but Iā€™m too afraid to call it at a bad moment and get HPBDā€™d for it. What are good moments to call it? After a blockstring for pressure, while Iā€™m in the air, what?

3- I actually got some of the tech, itā€™s just lol.tournament nerves, wanted to get rid of her right away. Worse comes to worst I can fairly easily do the japanese xfactor tac glitch. but I DO have to work on the timing of kill light phoenix, xfactor, FFC her. Tried it once but she wasnā€™t high enough to get hitā€¦ will work on it!

4- Check, I hate Wolverine :frowning:

5- You really think so? I only really use it to zone heavies out, Iā€™m too busy rushing the hell out of other people to put one out. Now that I think of it it could be good to counter divekicks, especially in that wolverine match. Will look into it!

6- Well thatā€™s fine and good, but if people keep pushblocking me (and they will because of Frankā€™s chip-inducing normals), Hawkeye will be fairly safe back there and if they try to punish both of us with a beam hyper like Chaotic Flame, I can counter with Survival Techniques. Should I just completely lay off it then? How should I go by applying pressure then? Cut my strings short to avoid getting punished?

7- But ToolsM deals so much damage and builds so much meter, I love to use it :frowning: if I value killing the other guy over getting level 5 frank (if theyā€™ve got a pixel of health that is), it even allows me to stick a second ToolsM in for even more damage and meter gain. Is it really that unsafe?

8- BLSing the last hit of million dollars actually occured to me as I rewatched my match so Iā€™ll bear that in mind; jumpback gunshot weskers actually give me trouble so cool; again, tournament nerves, I took a lot of unnecessary risks and did too many huge mistakes. Hopefully Iā€™ll do better next time, the biggest tournament in Portugal will go down on September 15th and 16th and I really, really wanna put up a fight there. Thanks Zansam!

So I started looking into using Frank as an anchor instead of on point, so that you can have two chances to level him up instead of just depending on your first character. Anyway, Iā€™ve always felt Frank teams biggest weakness was sacrificing your chance of killing the character just to level Frank. I feel you lose momentum and people can always come back. So I devised a way to level Frank and kill the character using Novaā€™s other good friend Spencer.

You can actually take a picture after the last vertical grapple from Spencer. He popped out the corner and I couldnā€™t get another chance to record this. It levels him to 4 though most characters wonā€™t survive the damage. Combo builds 1 and a half bars and uses 2. Let me know what you all think.

Couple things I noticed.

 1. Be more patient. Sometimes be content with just blocking. You were getting opened up a lot of times by his assists.

 2. Use Grav Pulse H more, Especially vs Wolverine and Magneto. Once you have red life pulse out, put an extra normal one out and start chucking javelins to gain some more momentum and control. Wolverine is a very tough matchup for Nova at the start of the round since everything he has is so much faster than Nova. Your goal is to avoid getting out of the corner. Call Frank at the start and try to super jump out to create space.

 3. Youā€™re not using his more damaging bnbā€™s. Stop with the day 1 fly combo and go for H loops.

 4. Learn how to instant overhead with Nova. You werenā€™t doing it.

 5. Always, Always, Always Option Select his Airdash j.H. You got thrown a couple times because you didnā€™t.

 6. Use Grav pulse H as an incoming mixup. Put it out and slide under them. j.M, j.H, works good vs people who are mashing constantly since j.M beats out a lot of things, but if theyā€™re content with blocking use that or the javelin mixup.

 7. Learn to read your opponent. When he had Phoenix in, you had to of known he was going to raw tag wolverine back in. Shouldā€™ve been an easy guess. Also at that same moment, when he transformed, it was a nice thought to team super, but you need to get that anti phoenix tech on deck. Nothing she can do about it. So I wouldnā€™t even bother snapping her in. Also, you had Hawkeye. You shouldā€™ve been chucking gimlets left and right.

 8. Just work on your neutral game. You were just probably nervous.

Hope this helps.

Iā€™m starting to think more and more Frank teams are going to start to transition to this type of Frank setup as the game progresses (especially since Jwong is running it). Or at the very least, be putting Frank second. really hoping the Frank on point teams go away. I think thereā€™s a couple things to point out though:

1 If youā€™re prioritizing leveling Frank (not necessarily #1, but still), youā€™ll have to know when/where you can alter the combo in order to still get in those snapshots before they die. Furthermore, you ideally want to be aiming for level 4-5, not getting stuck in 3 (3ā€™s not bad, but 4 is legions better).

2 You have to bear in mind the realities of an actual match. Frankā€™s your only coverage assist for that whole team, so you canā€™t bank on having that assist slot available for when you do combos. Likewise, Frank has minimal cover when heā€™s on point

3 Ideally, any teams works as a unit with all three members >> any two pairings >> a character by itself. In this instance, you have to have a gameplan for your Spencer/Frank and Nova/Frank shells for getting him leveled too. Nova/Frankā€™s a no brainer, but Spencer/Frank will take a bit more work. UVGs into raw tags work, as does Raw bionic arms >> blue light special (at the right height you can follow up combo).

4 Know who does the damage on the team. In this case itā€™s Spencer and Frank, so after you level Frank, your next goal should be to optimize the two of them to win.
