Feel my Power! The Nova Video Thread

It’s certainly up there; I personally feel the most important thing and hardest to learn for many is having a good mentality for how to approach the game. “play top tier, press buttons, go HAM” may work for some, but it’s not the only way and you have to find what both works and works for you. I myself take the approach of trying to commit less and have my opponent make the mistake.

Oh yea. I forgot about RDK!

I agree completely, I’m only just now starting to get a hang of that. Reading your opponent on top of situation recognition and understanding your options and your opponent’s options is really difficult, but (hopefully) once it clicks it becomes much easier to win.

BTW, there’s some footage from last night that I’d like to get some feedback on… any tips would be helpful, specifically about movement and matchups. I’m still pretty un-confident about fighting some characters here, like Cap, RR, Thor. http://www.twitch.tv/dangerroom/b/409218529

edit: Oh also, Frank tips would be much appreciated as well. This is my first time putting real work into the character.

Pretty much every player I respected and had a conversation with about reducing your committment level either agreed with me or demonstrated it when they played. Kinderparty countered by pointing out that some characters by nature have to commit (Wolverine), to which I agreed, but counterpointed that they also have to know when not to. there’s also instances of taking a more offense approach because you’re confident it’ll payoff in terms of risk/reward (look at the Frankie G vs Chris G match from UFGT9; Chris rushed him down all three games because he figured he couldn’t block. he was right). So hopefully people dont’ take my statement of non-commitment and assume I mean it for EVERYTHING. But I truly believe as a whole it’s the mentality that should guide your framework.

I’ll try to look at your footage tonight Disco, if not likely thursday. I’m always willing to help people who ask for it.

Thanks man, that would mean a lot. I’ll put timestamps to make things easier for people:

0:00:00 - 0:15:44
0:34:20 - 0:55:40, X-23 is hard to block
1:08:50 - 1:20:00
(I play Trish/RR/Doom a bit in between here but it’s not worth commenting on at this point lol)
2:41:11 - 3:14:10
Random select tournament starts here
6:13:11 - end are the last legit sets.

  1. Work on your instant overhead. You’re doing it too slow at times. Get the timing down for dash overhead, dash grab, or dash low.
  2. Abuse superjump airdash down j.H. It’s very good for controlling space.
  3. When you call Doom during Nova Slam for the extension, use St.H. Learn the timing.
  4. Movement. Don’t just sit there and wait for his assist to hit you. Backdash away.
  5. Learn the timing to calling Doom during Cent Rushes+Rocket Punch M. That helps you stay in and forces them to take your shit.
  6. More zoning. When fighting Doom or the X-23. More Pulses. Vs X-23, just put a pulse. Stand near it. Call Doom+Energy Javelin. If it hits, you get a combo. If they block they take chip. Rinse and repeat. Don’t go in like that vs Doom.
  7. Go low more. You almost everytime went high. With Cold Star you can neutral jump, add, land and go low.
  8. Get better at ground throws. With Doom too. I noticed you didn’t really use his forward throw. That’s the cheap shit with him.
  9. Utilize Guard Breaks more. Pretty much any time they push block after a j.H, you can airthrow or even ground throw if they pushblocked on the ground.
  10. Work on your incoming.

Besides that you’re playing well. You just need more experience and to polish your gameplay a little. Practice your zoning.

Also, here’s our archive on matches from Monday. Lots of good commentary and high lvl matches. Check it out if you like.
Still trying to level up my Doom.

Thanks so much Marv. Playing on PS3 for the first time really hampered my movement at times (I couldn’t get instant overheads consistently at all)… maybe I’ll get some XBox footage at some point.

Also in regards to guard breaks, are they really that free? I feel like I get pushed back too far away to grab them before they can move again. Is setting the dummy to All Block/random advancing guard/random throw tech a decent way to practice this?

Ah, that makes sense. Yeah, PS3 really fucks up your timing. I dropped like 100 combos with Dante at Winterbrawl because of it. Shit I never drop. But whatever.

And yeah, they’re that free. Start looking for pushblocks. If you see them pushblock your j.H, dash on the ground once then jump up and grab. Practice it in training mode! Set the PC to pushblock and normal jump while blocking. Once they’re afraid of your grabs they’ll start mashing H. Which will then get beaten out by your st.L. That’s the mixup. The only way to get out of those setups is to pushblock your j.H as late as possible, but really nobody really knows that unless they know the matchup really really well. Like Green Ace.

SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE!!!

…i wasnt ready!!!

also general info…if you happy birthday while grounded with gravimetric blaster and have another meter dont be afraid to immediately cr.:m:, :dp::l:, :dp::atk::atk: for a serious assist punish!

even better if they retreat after the first hyper but if they happen to jump over you for a cross up do your best to input the hyper correctly to still catch the assist!

@Zansam

I watched the first match of you vs Chris G

That

Can’t remember time

It was Top 16 Winners side right after the match with JDM

That match dazed me honestly. It went more or less how I envisioned it in my mind and left me a little shocked. Game 2 and 4 I could have made better decisions, but game 3 shows how even when you play correctly you can still lose. Was a fun set though. Chris also said the nicest thing to me when I said he could press the easy button I brought with me: "it wasn’t easy. "

http://youtu.be/vKbeX4KMWrA Heres a set i played with a friend online. I need help on this matchups and tips in general

Movement, Movement, Movement. Right now your movement with Nova and Spencer seems pretty limited and you don’t seem to know how to move with Doom at all. Get your Plink dashes down, or at least wave dash.

Your instant overhead is not nearly fast enough.

More Cent Rush + Beam, lots more.

Zero stuff. More red life M and L pulses, these are pretty much your only tools that can compete with his projectiles and hitboxes, use them. Make him block, this goes back to the more Cent Rush + Beam. If you try and challenge Zero when he’s free to move and swing, he’s going to out prioritise you. And KILL him, you decided against killing him to save your red life, that’s a bad decision, KILL ZERO.

you’re blocking a lot

If you plan on playing it safe, learn how to punish unsafe stuff

There are loads of opportunities for you to punish him like the buster xx lightning

Don’t back yourself into the corner at the start of the match. Even if you walk backwards before “FIGHT!”, get in the air or just in Zero’s face because he’s much more dangerous midscreen than he is right next to you. Full-screen is also a good place to be but you’re not going to get that positioning at the start of a match against a Zero who just walks forward. Actually it seems like you wised up to this after a few games, just be sure to be consistent about it.

As Sottle said, movement is the one thing you really need to master. Don’t just try to get in range to hit them with stand jabs, try to get to the position where they have to be scared of air dash H, Spencer’s command grabs, etc. I need to work on this myself but thanks to some good advice it’s coalescing a bit.

Centurion Rush H on incoming is unsafe without an assist like Drones or Cold Star. I don’t recommend doing it with your team :frowning:

Good job closing out the third round, good situation recognition and use of resources. I’m not sure if you meant to nullify round trip with Spencer’s downward zip but goddamn did that look godlike. You did the right combo to kill Vergil that would’ve worked even if you only had one bar.

Your use of c.M is pretty good, you caught your opponent in jump frames with it quite a few times. Nice alternating of high and low, though you do need to tighten up those instant overheads.

You played the Doom matchup pretty decently in the 4th game, good use of Nova’s spacing tools and getting out of foot dive range. Good ground throw if that was a dash/throw OS. Just needed to not drop the follow-up.

Definitely need more experience against Vergil. This guy’s Rapid Slash mixups were really telegraphed and there was no reason to get hit by them, even online. Most Vergils really like to do it right after Stinger (f.H) up close. Nice Bionic Arm to catch Rapid Slash, though the X-Factor into Bionic Maneuvers was a little questionable, probably an input error. Good recovery with Sphere Flame.

When someone does the Missiles xx Photon Array mixup, mash push block as you block the missiles. This pushes Doom all the way to the other corner if the missiles aren’t staggered properly, and in this case getting full-screen away from a meterless and x-factorless Doom would’ve been really nice. When you threw Doom after the missiles call, forward throw would’ve been better for combo purposes, though it didn’t really matter in the end.

Matchup tip: THROW ZERO. If you see him on the ground next to you after lightning and you’re not in block or hitstun, throw the motherfucker. This is how I kill Zero 75% of the time. I feel like jab punishing is a little unsafe but it’s probably doable.

You’re not playing badly, but you gotta work on your confirms (though the Spencer zip confirms were pretty advanced), your movement, and get more matchup experience.

Hey guys!! So today I ran some sets with friends and tbh I didn’t care to play most of em super hard but there was one match that was really fun and I can honestly say I was actually trying so I’m kinda hoping for some feed back =) it was a Ft5 with 1 runback I think.

starts at about 1:12:30

I WILL say please keep in mind we were playing on a kind of laggy TV (not SUPER laggy but also streaming did have a bit of an impact) so anything related to dropping combos, give the benefit of the doubt that it wasnt 100% on me (or him)…Generally speaking…I don’t drop Nova combos.

So I haven’t been playing a whole lot lately but I saw Moons post this on Twitter and figured I’d repost it here, it has some pretty nifty stuff in it:
