Feel my Power! The Nova Video Thread

Nice work!

Some would say this is weak or just play unnecessary but I’ll do what it takes to remove zero from the game asap and that lets me do it while not having to use a meter since I’m x-factoring for it. Not sure if there’s an assistless way to do this… Not without a meter anyway. Any suggestions?

If you’re running your Doom team you have no reason to do that. After the air throw, ADDF whiff M, hard tag into Doom, walk forward a step, s.MS, continue. It’ll take two bars if Zero’s at full health, but it’s better than spending X-Factor. Off a ground throw, maybe it’s in your better interest to pop X-Factor, but it depends on your opponent and the rest of their team. You’d probably wanna save XF for Vergil or Strider, for example.

well I’ve been told that but st.M > launcher whiffs on zero :frowning: keep in mind I’m pretty new to doom. so I just have to walk forward after the ADDF? It’s that simple?

You have to take like one single step then s.M. The timing is tight but once you get used to it it’s very consistent, and it’s worth it so you don’t have to spend X-Factor to kill a character with such low health. That same pickup is universal btw, at least on any character Zero’s size or bigger.

wouldnt f.H (hard kick) work as a suitable launcher substitute?

Doesn’t reach on most characters.

oh doom…what a diva!

here is some online matches i played earlier with my new team. I need alot of help, Tips and how i should be playing the matchups played. Evo 2013 training

Match 1: Nova vs. Spencer is hard for Nova for a jillion reasons… most of them are Bionic Arm, but what hurt you in this match was letting Spencer push you to the corner right at the start. I had a feeling you wanted the air grab at the start, which would’ve been great cause that guy was zipping in brainlessly with no assist, but after that miss it was Spencer/Missiles pressuring you pretty relentlessly.

You had chances to turn that around or at least not get hit, but there were just little matchup things that could’ve been done better:
First, grabbing Spencer out of a horizontal zip is a lot easier if you dash under him, then neutral or forward jump into the throw. Second, don’t stand L at Spencer when he’s on the ground, since it whiffs on him crouching. Other than that, you made good calls by getting the hell away from him and playing it safe, it’s just a matter of holding that down. It’s not easy, but it’s a winnable matchup.

After Nova died I think you played well aside from that one Doom drop, but you had good recovery and capitalized to get the win. The bionic arm to bait X-Factor was also really smart, but going for a M command grab instead of the unsafe wire grapple would’ve been a better option IMO, or just backing off.

Match 2: Dang, another bad matchup. This Cap was also pretty stupid because you could have safely instant-overheaded him a bunch when he went in recklessly, but I think online kept you from getting the punish. Just keep in mind that when Cap is right above you or right under you, it’s mostly pretty safe to pressure him.

Punish hard tags like when he brought in Nova at point blank. When he was in the air, it would’ve been better to throw Energy Javelins and not put up the shield.

I think you got a little reckless against Sentinel and only got away with it because this guy sucked. You were in a scramble situation after the throw, but air dash H-ing at him could’ve been fought easily with s.M or air-to-air j.M. When he’s got X-factor just back off, Nova can out-run and evade him very easily. Also just a small thing, when you got the hit on him you could’ve killed if you did Cent Rush L xx Gravimetric Blaster since you had so much red health. It’s important to not leave characters standing.
As for Doom, throwing Photon Shots at super jump height is not a great option vs. Sentinel because he can just super jump and hit you safely, more so when he has meter for Hard Drives.

Match 3: Right after you cleared the opening approach from Spencer, the guy started doing horizontal zips on the ground towards you and you kept pushblocking. Don’t do that, just throw him after he does the zip. It’s -4 on block and it might even be unsafe on hit. Anyway you did get the hit, but going for j.H against Spencer is very risky, even with assist cover.
Nice catch with wire grapple to kill Spencer, but try not to wire grapple point blank, it’s very unsafe unless canceled into Bionic Arm.
So Hawkeye gave you a little trouble. Nutty Hawkeyes are always annoying to fight, but both Spencer and Nova can deal with him well, and honestly I would’ve snapped him in for Iron Man if I got the chance. That first Bionic Arm was smart, and his Gimlet was really dumb, but DHCing into Gravimetric Blaster wasn’t going to lead to a good punish at all. If you did Super Nova you could have x-factored into a pickup, and if you did Speed Tackle you could’ve done the same thing with less scaling (but the confirm is more difficult). You handled him well at the end but that 1v1 went on way longer than it had to.

Match 4: Okay, Nova vs. Tron can actually be really annoying/hard if you’ve never fought her before. You may have noticed that her j.H and j.S destroy like every projectile Nova can throw out and Plasma Beam. This guy was playing really reckless and stupid, and when you see a Tron like that, you just have to move away and wait for her to do something unsafe. Her j.H can actually be punished by Nova’s c.M, but Drones make that pretty difficult. You probably won’t be playing any Trons at EVO (if you do it’ll be either ABEGEN or Rikir, and smart Trons are way easier to fight than mindless ones IMO), so this matchup might be tough to learn.
It seems like Spencer has an easier time against her, his stand L seems to work well. Nice wire grapple catches as well.
Burning X-factor to keep Spencer safe was a bad call since he needs it to fight Phoenix. Even without his anti-Phoenix technology, Bionic Arm + X-Factor keep her honest when dark. You also seemed to be running away from her with Doom at first, which might have worked if you kept it up because I don’t think this dude had regular Phoenix combos, and his chasedowns could’ve been avoided. Once she turned dark your best bet was to wait for her to land and level 3, but in a scramble situation like that (especially online), it was pretty much GG’s.

Match 5: Well played. Not really anything to comment on here except that random Cent Rush L at the start. I guess this guy was banking you on pressing buttons when he did that 99-second super, but it would’ve been easily punished if you were more patient. But you played the matchup right after that by staying on his ass. After that your mixups were solid and you had good reactions vs. Wesker.

Overall:
Work on your combo paths. This is easier to do offline than on, but work on zip combos and more optimal crumple combos. Didn’t get to see much of your Doom in this aspect but make sure you don’t drop his stuff. Also, watch some videos of Insaynne running this team, he makes it look very scary.
Try to learn Doom’s air movement better. Air plink-dashing is key for him, and knowing when to unfly is important to his zoning and runaway.
Grind the Spencer and Cap matchups. You didn’t lose these matchups every time, but these guys were also not very good. Matchups are much easier to learn when playing in Player Match and not Ranked Match. If you want to play sometime, give me a shout; I’m always looking for more training.
Other than that I think you’ve got a good hang of things, just be sure to play offline if you can, cause it’s a world of difference. And sorry for the essay lol

You’re way too stiff. Learn to move better with all your characters. Wavedashing, backwards wavedashing, plinkdashing, airdashing, etc. Move with your characters. Avoid their assists. You’re playing Marvel not SF.

Thanks for the input guys i appreciate it. Here in texas there is a pretty good scene so i will be teking this team to the streets. I have been watching alot of insaynne and Moons Nova movement and gameplay lately so im for sure trying to get movement down with him. Im down for matches online. need all the training i can get.

I swear to god movement is the hardest thing about learning this game.

yea its pretty rough, especially online.

Nice, cool to see someone getting that setup online consistently. Just a question though, have you ever considered putting Doom 2nd? You’d get a guaranteed unblockable on most incoming characters that way using Photon Shot -> Photon Array (grounds the opponent) into Round Harvest. Anchor Nova isn’t great, but I dunno. It’d turn the team into a true TOD vortex.

Never tried it. I will definitely give it a shot!

I like switching Doom and Trish in the back because if anything happened to Doom or Trish, then Nova will still have a horizontal assist. Also, I would rather have Trish or Doom with XF3 than Nova. Maybe I need to step up my anchor Nova

Yeah practice anchor Nova a bit. If you have him last with XF and a lot of meter, he is going to get in on people guaranteed. Speed Tackle is so dumb when it’s that fast, and it’s very safe. Damage is the only problem.

A Trish bnb, setup, Doom bnb builds costs 1 meter but builds 2.5. If I can get the first character into the setup, then I can kill both pretty easily. just as long as they dont have an invincible air hyper, it should work. This could be some new anti phoenix tech too.

Does Doom need to do air photon shot xx photon array or is ground okay?

This is actually pretty old tech, RDK’s been using it since Ultimate came out. Check any of his videos, especially recent stuff from Toryuken and you’ll see it used. You have to super jump up back or jump back ADUB when you’ve got the team cornered, immediately Photon Shot (not sure what strength but I use L) then Photon Array, let it rock for most of the animation and DHC into Round Trip. It is very free except on people with invincible air hypers, but I do think it would be an amazing way to kill Phoenix off of her transformation pretty free, at least if you have the meter and positioning to spare. However she may blow Phoenix Rage to stay alive well before you get the setup.
