Feel my Power! The Nova Video Thread

Yeah first off, no matter how good or bad a Morridoom player is, the matchup is almost always annoying at first and takes a lot of dissecting of your own game. We’ve all read a ton of theory and matchup knowledge here but it doesn’t mean much until you actually fight against it. So don’t feel bad.

Don’t air dash forward during the flood, there’s no angle where you’re not going to get hit. Regular dash and either jump to get over fireballs or crouch to stop your momentum (and don’t forget to block if you do either). The Morrigan player was doing the two most basic patterns, ground Soul Fist M fly cancel air Soul Fist H, and air Soul Fist L/M fly cancel Soul Fist L/M. Practice evading those in training mode just to get the rhythm down. And don’t be afraid to super jump, fly, and flex for a bit. At least you can avoid some chip and run out her meter.

Sadly you don’t have an assist that can start a zoning presence for you like Plasma Beam, which would be nice because a protected Energy Javelin will hit Doom out of missiles before he gets to call more than one or two. You don’t really have any option but to run away or go in with Nova. So if you’re going to go in, make sure you’re gonna do it from the start of the round, walk forward and call Frank, show the opponent you don’t give a fuck.

As for when you get down to Frank/Ammy, you had a lot of opportunities to use team super that wouldn’t have gotten punished. You would have tagged Doom and gained levels even if Morrigan had blocked. If you were able to call it during her first fireball, she’d get hit since she can’t unfly cancel, which would force her to XF or die. Otherwise it looks like Frank really flails around in this matchup without levels. As Zansam said don’t be afraid to tag in Ammy.

Anchor Ammy vs. Morridoom team sucks, but it’s workable. You never got a chance to spend bar with Nova and Frank, so you had like 4/5 Veils of Mist at your disposal each round. Don’t wait to down a character before you use them, just use them. They make Morrigan (and Doom missiles) a lot more punishable. Only use the reflector to show that you have the option, if you hold it you’ll get caught reflecting missiles while she comes down with Shell Kick and you won’t be able to switch. So it’s difficult to try and catch Shell Kick after baiting Soul Fists. Ammy can definitely handle Morrigan, but she has to be proactive with slow, use the glaive and paper a lot to make her more careful about her movement. Be unpredictable.

Anyway, I hope you got a casuals set or two against that guy, if not, play him next time you go out. Good luck. And I love the random English thrown into the Portuguese commentary haha.

edit: Wait what the fuck, you guys play 60 seconds instead of 99? No wonder you ended up in super desperate situations with Ammy every match… Tell them to cut that shit out!

Thanks for the feedback. I’m positive that if I play the guy more I’ll learn the matchup and know what to do and what not to do. Problem is I’m impatient by nature, so add a high pressure team like morridoom to a high risk/high reward team like mine and you have a problem… not to mention I don’t have a beam or projectile assist. With that in mind I’m considering dropping Frank for Doom in these tougher matchups for safety concerns. I should still main Frank against matchups I consider under control. Perhaps with time I’ll find doom is obsolete and I can do it with my Frank team. Also the matches are supposed to be 99 seconds, not 60, someone changed it and I never noticed it though I did find those matches awfully short. It was on me to notice it. Not that it mattered, on the first round I had a half life x-factorless ammy vs a full team, nigh undoable, and time wasn’t really an issue on the second and third rounds. Him and a UK player I’m friends with are learning morridoom so I’ll play more with them to learn the match-up. Thanks for the feedback, though I’m ashamed to show you that match because it doesn’t really show much of what I can do, I’m a lot better than that usually. Unfortunately that was the only match I had on stream.

You should try more team supers.

YES! For once I can be helpful…I actually play the MorriDoom matchup every week…I used to get BOPPED but now I have a decent understanding of the match up to highlight a few points (a lot of thing other people already said):

  1. patience
  2. too much j.H
  3. not enough fullscreen punishes with blaster. After a certain point of taking chip, you WILL have red health on deck…BLAST THE SHIT out of Doom…best part is with a bit of red health on deck, the beam gets big enough that missiles wont hit if you don’t super ahead of time.
  4. not enough super jumping. Like someone else touched on, you should have been up in the corner of the screen more. Forcing them to come up gives you some time to come back down and sneak your way in some more
  5. my personal favorite; H Pulse in the air…putting an H Pulse at super jump height will eat missiles and allow you to make some progress forward
  6. H centurian rush…very handy…not something to abuse though but definitely something to remind them is in your moveset…make sure you only use it on the first fireball though
  7. 99 second snap…shit is good man…they will never see it coming…if you can get a snap (preferable to the anchor position), you will mess with their head

There’s probably somethings I’m forgetting but yeah

The problem with 99 snapping Morrigan is that you can only really do it against fireball startup or j.H. Shell Kick will trade, which is so fucking annoying.

I keep forgetting to do super jump height H Pulse though, one of the best strats for sure.

Oh and I forgot about L and M Pulse…USE THEM!!! They will eat a projectile and can clean up some space for you to move. And if you have some health…=)…also, using it as anti air is really powerful

I don’t trust myself is those because my reactions aren’t the best and gravimetric blaster has a fairly huge start-up I’d probably get knocked right out of it by a fireball on my back before it even got off though I suppose I shouldn’t do it while AV is active. Also midscreen THC between Frank and Ammy is random, they might drop off because Frank pushes them away from the ice and they might hit the ground before thunder connects, dropping the combo

Don’t worry about all that…just do it.

Yeah at least put the fear in their mind, remind them that you have the option.

Ok I’ll work on it  thanks for the feedback, I really need to improve. Just wish I could actually show you matches where I don’t suck haha

I just wish we could all play together in a lag-free environment. We’d discover soooooooo much Nova tech.

However that also means playing Nova mirrors which everyone hates but me and Darryn lol

I don’t mind Nova mirrors though I wish j.H was actually anti-airable by st.L haha. Most people in Portugal hate both Nova and Frank actually, kinda my fault ^^;

Yeah, I’ve found that it’s really a patience-based matchup. You gotta use the shield and javelins plus a long-range horizontal assist. I wish the last set Darryn and I had was recorded, it was one of the slowest matches ever haha.

I’ve also grinded this matchup a lot recently, i haven’t played any top Morridooms apart from one tourney match against Cheech Wiz where i got bopped, but that’s what made me grind it out.

First off, switch the team order. Nova/Ammy/Frank. You still get the level up with DHC to slow and tag Frank, but more importantly you get a 2 bar team super with Nova, a safe DHC and two point characters in a row that have some options. If it goes horribly wrong, you get fucked with Level 1 Frank anchor, but in this matchup, if it goes horribly wrong, Level 5 Frank or Anchor Ammy isn’t going to save you anyway.

cr.B + assist xx M Pulse is your best approach option on the ground. If they’re in Astral, use Ammy, she can sit behind you and soak up any fireballs from the back to allow you to confirm or continue pressure. If they’re not Astral, use Frank, Frank will move forward and have a good chance of clearing out Doom or Vergil.

At the start of the round H Pulse + Javelin does fine, you can gain yourself some meter, pick some chunks out of Doom with Javelins and pretty much be risk free. Once she activates, just fly up and hold that victory pose and wait for that shit to pass unless you spot a very obvious hole for an approach.

If you are going to go for the Nova/Ammy team super, or a Human Rocket, you want to do it when she throws her first fireball of a pattern, preferably on the ground. From that position she can only fly cancel, and there’s not enough time to fly and unfly to block.

Also watch out for if they ALWAYS come down with shell kick, if they do, you can whiff punish it like a divekick with cr.B.

If Frank does get in at low level, desperation team super is pretty much all you have.

Got any clue?

EDIT: Someone noticed that it was the first attack. So this has absolutely no use in battle. Just for fun in the lab

It would be banned anyway if it was viable.

So with Grav Pulse lvl 2, Nova/Strider can loop 3 supers.

im envious of all you great nova players/posters…so i finally got around to uploading at least one video haha!

enjoy!!!

tear tear Im so proud! We finally broke 900k with 1 meter.

Small video because I really hate Zero and wanna make sure he dies from any possible situation. I also plan on uploading an airgrab x-factor meterless kill. Doom beam + javelin combo really well but against zero (and probably other small characters) he has to be either cornered or fullscreen or javelin will whiff completely because of the knockback. Also works from a stray Javelin but I don’t know how realistic it is that any half-decent Zero will get clipped by one. Doesn’t work as well in the corner but I’m working on it. What do you guys think?
