Doom’s combos are far easier than mag’s, his midscreen relaunch combos can be a little tricky at first but its not that hard after a bit of practice. His corner combos are very easy, build a ton of meter and can do 700k-1mil+ depending on how many meters you wanna spend. And i havent even tried UMVC3 yet, they’re probably even better/easier with all the buffs he’s getting.
Hey guys I’m attending a stream tonight http://www.twitch.tv/kocast
I’m going to primarily be playing shuma thor strange as my team. Hopefully I can show off some of the nice things thor can do now.
It starts at around 7pst. Tune in if interested.
If you haven’t already checked out my post in the Mighty Punish thread. That stuff may or may not be news to you. Can’t wait to see you play!
I caught the last couple of Ultimate matches before they switched to KoF13 so I missed you playing your Thor team. If you post the time stamps of when you were on stream then I’ll watch it.
41:20
28:50 in part 2.
I drop a lot of stuff in my first few matches but after that I start doing very well especially in part 2. I feel shuma was the star of my team though haha.
you’ve got a great shuma and thor, although im confused about why you keep ending thor’s air combos with S and not following it up, were you just inputting the mighty smash H too quickly or do you do that to setup tri jump mix ups? And i think you should be a little more careful when throwing out mighty smash M, even if you can cancel into MP i think that its something that should be used scarcely or if you mess up, not something you should be intentionally aiming for often.
On another note, i dont even have the game yet and i already hate strange, i can clearly see the constant random hypers that will be thrown at me online >.>
As a newer Thor player, I really liked how he trained his opponent into blocking. It’s something that I’m working on, and it’s not at all easy with as slow a character as Thor. I can’t put a time stamp to it, but he wiffed a very low Air :h: and went right into a MH. He timed it perfectly so that the :h: didn’t actually get into it’s active frames - and his opponent was blatantly blocking.
And I love Strange as my anchor. He’s got the perfect assist for Thor - often my opponent will duck the assist and get hit with my tri dash :l:. It’s amazing at keeping them in a down block, entirely useless against short characters though.
Also, Strange/Thor do great against runaway PWright players. I spent a good half an hour today practicing full screen flight with Thor, getting to the opponent before Strange’s assist drops back. That paid off immensely as I ended up fighting 4-5 PWright teams today. Wrecked them thoroughly.
I’ve been putting a lot of time into Marvel and I’m seeing it pay off. I started with a 7-10 record today, I went on a few +5 win streaks today. I think I have the basics down well enough, I need to level up some more.
I don’t know if too many of you are doing this, but I had a Ryu player use Wesker’s down shot assist while simultaneously hitting me with a j.Tatsu - at first I was like “WAT THE HELL!! I WAS BLOCKING GAHH!”. And then I watched Wesker disappear and I was all, " you…clever bastard." Thinking of ways to implement into my own game.
I messed up every time I did that. In the corner I try to do fullcharge hsmash , m smash, j.l then mh if they block s mstrike if they mash. Its a 50/50 from what I can tell.
Hey guys just wanted to let you know that Mighty Punish trades with Hawkeyes Gimlet Super. I had some kid random that shit as they all do at point blank and countered with Mighty Punish. It ended up trading as a jab for both, or it appeared that way.
So I was workin’ on some block strings, because I don’t like the crouching :l: crouching + assist call :h: Mighty Smash, because you can be grabbed out of it pretty easily. (unless your assist is a really good lock down one, but mine aren’t at the moment). Anyway, I was experimenting with things you could do with Mighty Strike. So far, the best thing I’ve done is go somethin’ like crouching :l: crouching
+ assist call :l: Mighty Strike :h: Mighty Hurricane. I was surprised this worked because I didn’t think :l: Mighty Strike on block gave you much of anything on the ground, and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t, but for some reason it works very well. Tried it on the computer in a simulated match and have discovered that after they block, they can get a grab in before you get your command grab in, but in me doing the hurricane input, I’m occasionally option selecting my own grab and teching out of it. Should also be noted that I grabbed the computer out of a team super. I just found that interesting and wanted to share.
is there any reason to use L strike over L or H smash? i mean mighty smash works as a mix up, has faster start up and recovery, and they’re safer on block (H gives you a lot of advantage and L is only -4) so i cant imagine mighty smash having any flaws that L strike could overcome.
Yeah, like I said, :h: Smash is really vulnerable to air throws. After doin’ that against my friend for so long, (we play each other practically every day), he’s found the right moment in between the block string to get a throw, assist or not. (And since he plays Taskmaster, 3 air throws into arrows is death.) The only way I can see Mighty Smash being viable is if your lockdown assist lasts a really long time, and apparently mine doesn’t. I was using Dormammu’s Purification at the time. Maybe I was calling the assist too early or late, but whatever it is, he gets those throws consistently, so I’m definitely looking for other options, and right now Mighty Strike seems like it’s worth giving a try.
ya it does sound like you’re not timing the assist correctly, and eventhough i also prefer to use the purification assist with thor i have to admit that its not good for the mighty smash mix up.
With the right assist/timing there should be little or no chance for them to go for an air grab, even if its possible it would be very hard to do and i wouldnt expect it to happen unless im playing against someone who has experience facing it (like your friend). You could always switch it up and dont overuse the same block string so that it doesnt become predictable, like do a cr.LM xx MH, a tick throw can be very effective when they’re expecting you to end the block string with a mighty smash, especially if they think they can punish it so they dont push block.
And that’s why I’m looking for something new. Currently, it’s the only block string I know to do. So when exactly do you time the assist. I always hit it and the crouching at the same time.
i dont know tbh, the timing isnt the same for all assists and ive never rly tried it with purification. But the safest way is to time the assist so that it hits in between the first and the 2nd hit of mighty smash. Problem is you’re not using a very good assist for it, purification doesnt rly lockdown that good and it has a pretty small range, not to mention that even if you manage to cross them up with mighty smash and purification hits you cant follow it up.
I might mess around with it a little more when i get umvc3, too lazy to try stuff out in vanilla. But shouldnt it be safe to end a block string with mighty spark L since its + on block and no longer whiffs on crouching characters in umvc3?
Really im sure there are plenty of options out there, you can stick with mighty strike L if you want but i cant imagine it being very safe. I mean it has 20 frames of start up so does cr.LM xx L strike rly act as a true block string? doesnt that give your opponent enough time to recover from the block stun and interrupt it? and its very punishable on block. So unless im wrong about this not being a true block string, i dont think that its possible to even make this safe unless you use an assist that stays active long enough to cover both the start up and the recovery.
Try Dark Hole,Doom Missiles,Sent drones or Eye of agamatto. they all work for my two block strings … I generally do Tridash J :l: for overhead, C :l:,C:m:,:a1:, :h: mighty smash. you are in a really good position depending on which assist you are using at this point, Another Block string that I really like is jump in :s:, xxx, mighty Strike, c:l:, c:h:+:a1: (if they are blocking xxx Kara, :h: mighty Hurricane), if not :h: mighty smash. if its all blocked they should still be in stun from agamatto the follow up is nice because its an overhead approach and after a low most people fall for it. After blocked :h: mighty smash TK :l: mighty strike, j:l:, c:l: into combo opens up most people who dont have really good defense. Hope that helps.
Yeah, Thor must have great unblockables with his fast tri-jump and Wesker assist. I use She-Hulk, so she’s a little more telegraphed, but I do try them every now and then with a super jump addf S while She-Hulk is coming at them from below. She comes out so slowly that people usually don’t even realize I called her.
Did pretty well tonight. No one seems to understand how to fight Thor. My only real losses went to players that were much, much better than me. I fought a Magneto/Zero/Sentinel and a Zero/Sentinel/Doom that absolutely destroyed me. Nearly perfected both times. It hurt a little.
At times I’ll be rushing down well, but I can’t seem to get in a throw because they’re mashing cr.:l: at every opportunity. Solution? Standing Mighty Strike. Come down on their head with Air. :l:. Result? Everybody. Getting mad.
Watched as many of your matches as I could, your Thor is crazy. After watching you play, I can’t see Thor’s potential maximized without an OTG assist. Personally, I don’t like She-Hulk - but I stole that OTG corner combo you do. It’s so gdlk.
Once I get Doctor Strange down solid I’m going to learn another OTG assist character (Wesker is entirely too derp).
so i really like dive bombing people with nova’s tri jump H. what is the best jumping opener with thor? tri jump L(might cross up), crouch M, into Special launcher? The frames seemed pretty good for thor to keep it from being punished. Is adding a mighty spark L if it’s blocked keep it safe it it is not already safe? also doing mighty smash H fully charged randomly a bad idea compared to tiger knee mighty strike L? i read the both have great frames and armor which is awesome. I will be trying this is training as we speak but though i would ask the pro minds like legendary dj and crouch strong haha(plus whoever else, i know gimpyfish is in every character forum i ever visit haha.
