FEEL HEAVEN'S WRATH: Thor Thread Reloaded

Thor doesn’t have a level 3, his insane damage could be a contributor to that. But from what I’ve been seeing anyone who has 3 level 1’s doesn’t have a level 3 from what it looks like to me. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Also, is your avatar thor’s assist fighting stance in mvc1? If so it looks like they just recycled that pose and made in 3d in mvc3.

I’m a huge marvel fan, so this game and his movie has me hype. Thor will be the first grapple character I ever touch in a fighter. I’m more hype for cap’s trailer during the super bowl though.

@bladeofjustice: I believe morrigan and wolverine are the only exceptions to that rule.

would you guys say thor is the perfect character for someone who likes heavyweights/grapplers? and just likes being aggressive no fancy combo’s just good old fashioned brawling

Probably, he has what looks like a good command grab that leads to big damage and an air version of said command grab for some nice resets. Then he has a command grab super that looks pretty good as well, and he hits like a truck so I would definitely recommend him from what we know.

good to know
i was hoping seth killian wasn’t lying during that demo vid of thor(and that latest vid where some MVC2 veteran gets to try out the game he seems to try and defend thor’s usefulness)

Well seth will defend every character, its kinda his job so despite how much I like the guy, when it comes to character balance I would talk everything he says with a grain of salt. With that said he actually showed some really good stuff with him, and a lot of people who have played him in recent builds say he is a lot better now. Of course we won’t know for sure until we have spent some proper time with the game.

yeah i remember when he talked about hakan before the release of SSF4
made him sound like a dream for grappler players
but he turned out to be harder then any grappler should be

or how about when he called makoto mini zangief

lol yea, while I won’t say that he lies to us, fact of the matter is there are some things you just can’t foresee till a game hits retail. But at the moment thor looks like a good character if you like grapplers.

Oh and to all the people complaining about his lack of a hammer throw, while it isn’t much if you look at his mighty strike I believe he actually throws the hammer(with the rope still around this wrist) and it propels him forward. I know it isn’t exactly what y’all wanted but beggars ain’t choosers.

Seth doesn’t go to great lengths to make characters he thinks suck seem good, he wasn’t coy in saying Thor needed work earlier on and I’m sure he didn’t think Makoto and Hakan would end up as they did. Hakan seemed really good early on after all.

nobody even knew makoto and hakan were going to be that difficult

Funny enough a TON of gief players were lamenting about the changes given to gief and talking about how they would all switch to hakan, then super came out…

You know, I’ve been thinking, and I think that if Phoenix DOES see a lot of play, Thor’s going to be a really good counter-pick for her. I mean to start off, he’s got that chance to snap her in for a free Mighty Punish (and probably more than half her life).

But on top of that, if she switches to DPh, the person playing her is going to feel a ton of pressure to rush in and lay down some damage before she dies. Yeah, she’s got some ranged tools, but they’re all oriented toward aiding rushdown, rather than for any real kind of keepaway/chip. With Thor’s Mighty Tornado hyper, one of them, sans X-Factor, is likely to almost take her out by itself (with X-Factor you could just think about the move and she’d die). More importantly, that hyper makes Thor totally invulnerable inside it, and it’s GREAT for stuffing crossups. Predict the dive or teleport and unload one of those, and Jean’s gone.

Mighty Punish won’t be free on Phoenix, because she (as well as any other character) can attack while coming in. Plus she can teleport, 8-way dash, or activate flight before hitting the ground.

If anything I think She Hulk will be the Phoenix killer when it comes to snap-ins (or jump-ins after a character death). She Hulk’s anti air super causes her to jump up and towards the opponent, so Phoenix probably won’t have any chance to avoid it. Free super on Phoenix means that she’s gonna take 60-75% at least lol. With X-factor it’ll probably kill her.

Speaking of Thor, I still want to see Thornado, XFC, Thornado. I bet it does retarded damage to any character.

Actually untrue, the person who was streaming the other day tried that exact same move with She-Hulk against Phoenix coming in. Right range and everything, but it just pushed Phoenix away.

ooohhhhh weird. Cause UltraDavid, as well as Royalflush, said that it worked against incoming characters. Was that the JustinTV stream?

Also Saitsu when you get a chance don’t forget to add Thor’s assists to the first post.

EDIT: Someone needs to do this: Make an avatar with Thor’s head. Photoshop on some aviator sunglasses, and have his exposed upper-teeth biting his lower lip. At the bottom of the pic have a subtitle that reads…

(wait for it)

Dat Assgard

right now i don’t know who i’ll use more haggar or thor

A few pages back, Bronzefist asked if anyone was particularly interested in playing Thor.

I am, albeit within only one team: Tron + Haggar + Thor. The question will be whether his Mighty Spark assist can meaningfully cover Tron/Haggar approach. Thor is essentially “my third choice”; I love heavy grapplers and the obvious ones are Tron, Haggar, Thor, and Hulk but I like Thor more than I like Hulk.

If it works, this will be an incredibly fun team. I admit I have serious worries about it however, I worry that Mighty Spark won’t be enough to deal with keepaway projectile strategies… hmm. Edit: If not, I may sadly have to drop Thor in favor of someone who can cover Haggar and Tron better. I would love to see this team of triple heavy grappler work, though.

actually i think its his job to make every character sound awesome
i mean he’s not going to go out there and say something like this character sucks or whatever
but right now it doesn’t seem too far off that he thinks thor is a good character
during the whole demo of thor
he seemed to be having a much better time then when he demo’ed dormammu for example

Nah Seth seemed legitimately hype when he showed off his Thor. Watch his demo of Gen or Gouken for SF4. That’s when he sounded “eh”.

well guy’s today’s the super bowl
be sure to keep an eye out for the brand new thor god of thunder movie trailer
