FEEL HEAVEN'S WRATH: Thor Thread Reloaded

Yeah, I feel like the biggest weakness Thor has is how terrible all of his moves on block.

For sure, PM sent.

Interesting, I did not know you could dash like that in flight. Good for runaway, I wonder if there is a way to incorporate it in another way.

Yeah, I’m constantly impressed by how creative the Thor forum is compared to others. The idea sharing, testing, feedback, theory and general discussion is top notch. With any luck, Thor will finally get notice and see some tournament play and we can all say “I was there man! From the beginning!”. Can’t a guy dream?

For that fly dash technique, off hand I can see it being incredibly useful for punishing long, beam supers or quickly chasing people in the air. The positioning potential on it is gold, and really makes Thor pretty beastly in the air. Between that and my beloved Mighty Strike, Thor will control the skies! Going to test it THORoughly (see what I did there?) this weekend.

So stoked!

Yeah, I like that fly bit. I’m sure any flier can do it, but I can’t think of anyone who benefits more from quick movement options than Thor. I can see both offensive and defensive potential. If you get good at getting in and out of flight, and bring along a good assist (I’m already thinking Doom missiles), I’d imagine it might be pretty hard to keep Thor off of you. I wonder if you could go into that “mode” of flight from Mighty Strikes? I know you can exit flight with them. Also, the more ways you have of getting into that flight mode WITHOUT super jumping, the better, because that means you can still call assists from the air. Definitely worth testing.

I bet there’s a way to develop triangle slides out of this flight dash thing, too.

The only other major thing we need to be working on is figuring out some tech to compensate for the slowness/unsafeness of Thor’s normals (damn Capcom for not giving him armor). Right now, all I’ve got is timely canceling of normals into L Mighty Spark or Hurricane. Anything working on that angle will be a huge boon to Thor’s continued development.

I think the only thing that Thor really have problem with is his slow normals. I have a relatively easy time zoning people and play keep away with the flight dashing. But once i find an opportunity to get in, it seems impossible to keep the pressure on without a good close
range assist like Tron/Chun/Haggar. The only 3 opener to get in i usually use is tridash l >cr.l , squaredash h to crossup or landing a random air mighty strike. Anyone has experience playing with the instand air mighty stirke L like the guide mentioned?

I just had an idea, so Thor game is based on reset after the mighty smash OTG or the air reset after mighty strike or mighty spark. In the case of mighty smash reset, the opponent have a few options to beat the mighty tornado/combo mixup. If we can have mixup options that can beat multiple options of theirs, it will make Thor’s game really nasty. My idea is that after the mighty smash reset, call in an assist that will beat any air normals while going for a mighty tornado. If timed correctly, the only option that they can escape with should be an hyper or they call an assist that beats your assist and you. It should beat attempt to mash any normals/ normal throw/ block. Have to do some lab testing, but what do you guys think about that train of thought?

K just tested a few setups, it seems after the mighty smash reset, calling Hsien-Ko assist right after u jump up for the mighty hurricane is very safe, espeically if she has hyper armor, basicly it’s either they get grabbed or gets hit by the senpu bu coming down. My execution isn’t the best, I will try to test this combo further. If this trick is full proof, i think a team of Hsien-Ko/Thor/ Dormammu might be a very legit team.

lol i was just thinking about this team today armored hsien ko helps not only thor but dorm as well because of how much screen her armored swing assist covers (sorry cant think of the name of it right now) it makes zoning with him better and you can still teleport behind with dorm for mix ups not only that the assist makes your opponent afraid to push buttons which is what you want with thor only problem i think this team will have is maybe not a complete dhc synergy like dorm and thor have

I tend to focus a lot on DHC synergy when building teams, as well. Unfortunately, it can be tough with characters like Thor who have no long-range hypers, both in the sense that they have trouble DHC’ing with a lot of the cast, and in the sense that it’s hard to build teams with them that can really punish mistakes very well (something that is super important to me). As a result, I’ve developed a few categories for good DHC pairings.

The first and (imo) best is characters who have fast, long-range hypers that actually move their bodies forward. This is good because not only can they punish mistakes like a lot of projectiles can, but once they’re in physical proximity to the opponent, DHC’ing into a short-range hyper (i.e. - Mighty Tornado) becomes easy. The best of these has to be Spencer’s Bionic Lancer. It’s so fast, so versatile, only one hit (low scaling), and if you DHC immediately on impact Tornado hits fully, or if you DHC just after impact as they fly over your head, Mighty Thunder hits fully. Hulk’s Gamma Crush and Skrull’s Torch are also good at this to a slightly lesser degree, and many other characters (Deadpool, Cap. America, X-23, Viper, etc.) have similar options.

The second category is characters who have DHC’s that hold/knock the character in place while you DHC. This includes Doom, Taskmaster, Wesker, and Hsien Ko. While it’s not ideal, if your spacing is good, you can use this kind of hyper to position characters correctly for a short-range hyper like Thor’s to connect.

The third category is characters whose hypers stay on screen even once you’ve DHC’d out of them. This includes Amaterasu (if timed right), Zero, Storm, Dormammu, Morrigan, Trish, and Tron, to name a few. These are somewhat useful because even if you don’t get the positioning exactly right, the DHC can still leave your opponent vulnerable or at least defensive to give Thor an advantage coming in.

Overall, I’ve had the best DHC luck with Thor by pairing him with Hulk (it’s almost like they were made for each other) and Spencer, followed by Doom, She-Hulk, Tron, and a couple others. I really think DHC synergy is among the top priorities for successful teams, and I highly recommend people give a lot of thought to it. Right now, I’ve been running Thor with Hulk and Spencer. With Spencer, if I DHC from Thor into his Bionic Lancer, I can otg the opponent with him into ANOTHER Lancer and then DHC BACK into Thor. It takes 4 bars, but nobody survives. :badboy: And with Hulk, well… you can only really use two bars at a time, but it’s Thor and Hulk: nobody survives. :china:

Not sure if this has been posted, but some pretty decent thor play here, plus a very nice DHC between him and tron bonne although I wonder if just DHCing into might tornado would have just done more damage.

I dunno, that dash limit has been pretty old. Seen plenty of Mags use it on WNF to run away from Phoenix, Final Round too but yar.

Question for you Thor users: Can Thor use his flight mode in combos like Mag’s j.H-adf-j.H-adf-j.H loop?

Don’t think you can actually fly with thor in the middle of combo, it’s sooo slow to startup

Random titbits from myself. This is long, sorry about that.

Why Thor is the man: getting pressured as fuck for the last 30 second taking like a half bar of damage or worse, all you can do is just block… then you JUST spot and react to the opening for mighty hurricane. Then you combo. And reset. And combo again. They die within 5 seconds

“Sit down BITCH, for I am the god of thunder!”

Never gets old.

Delayed tick throw thing: The counter to this technique would be to instead of holding down back whenever you start getting hit by thor’s cr. light is to just hold up back? I presume there are prejump vulnerable frames, but I can imagine that a follow up cr. light from Thor is way too slow to be a threat. So they would be safe from normals all 90% of his moves (bit like Gief… sometimes you hold up back just to get away)… In which case, instant air mighty hurricane would be handy. Does it come out fast enough/reach far enough? I’m about to hit the sack now so I can’t test.

**Teleports: **God, I’ve finally started to be able to properly react and punish Dante’s teleport. I used to just crouching M or block for fear of how slow cr medium could come out. Then I realised I could on reaction jump and mighty hurricane him. At least if he’s stupid and doing it without being covered by assists (probably only done by bad players, but when I was unable to punish them… shit why not do it?) When I’m hit by that kinda thing when he’s just naked, I feel like an idiot. At least if I get hit with it with sent drones or some shit on the screen I feel a little better. Still trying to figure out a decent way to stop teleports from Wesker/Dorm/Deadpool (ie one were there spacing and timing can be variable). I’m not so sure Thor has answers for those. Some success with cr. M against wesker, but again the moment he baits me out by teleporting somewhere else I’m screwed. I’ve tried mighty smashes and mighty strikes to beat him coming out of the air, but they don’t seem like good options. So I either just try and block, or get out of there by super jumping. My reasoning is at least if I do end up getting tagged in the air, its a heck of a lot better than on the ground where they lead to big combos.

Board love: peeps don’t know about the Chun board for SFIV (well, I know ark does since he was on there), but THAT was how a board should go. No disrespect to this one of course!

Cross counters: I think its been mentioned maybe, but I’m using cross counter mighty smash to great effect. Its a fantastic way to get your point character out of there when they are in trouble. Thor can take a beating if it gets blocked, but thats to the invincibility, it hits more often than not you pick a good moment to do it.

Holy shit (again!) great find! Great to finally see some good games from Japan! Should be front page if you ask me.

edit: Found , even better play here really.

has his tick throw has been mentioned yet? I found it easy to perform with s.h into any mighty hurricane. when you press s.h right when hes about to swing you see the thunder quickly do mighty hurricane.

Man that team is sick! So much DHC synergy. All have command grabs high HP and high damage combos, most importantly, the ability to reset the damage scaling with Thor and She Hulk’s grab hyper, and both grab basically synergize with each other, one covers ground, the other air. The only problem i can think of is what if that team is facing a keep away team or rushers with good mobilities like Wesker/ Dante/ Magneto

So went to my first tourney this weekend (ever for any fighting game). Some of you might have seen it (or maybe not lol) but it was the stream that TeamKhaos was running… only had like 300 viewers or so. Anyways, I lost both my matches but it honestly was just sort of inexperience more than anything. I literally dropped 90% of my combos… this was partially due to the fact that I never play offline, training mode is totally different than an actual offline match for so many reasons.

Although I lost in the tourney I did pretty well in casuals off the tournament. I played like 4 different people and I did very well against 2 of them, was pretty even with 1 (shout outs to gimpyfish… hope he makes his way over to the Thor forum), and lost most to the other guy (Very good Magneto and Ammy player… Magneto is my bane especially with drones assist)… he got 2nd place in the tourney though so he is one of the best players in the area.

Overall, I turned a lot of heads with Thor. I actually got 1 tourney match on stream and was able to hit a mid screen reset with Thor which got the crowd pretty hyped. Had a couple convos with some people and they agreed that Thor will be one of the characters that is slept on early and catch a lot of people by surprise later on.

Next tournament I am hoping to do much better now that I have that experience under my belt. I don’t expect to drop all my combos and do stupid stuff in the end with Dormammu to choke away a match lol.

Glad I could get Thor’s name out there.

Start playing offline more son.

Not even due to with the fact that a laggy online isn’t great, but your ability level grows so much faster when you have offline competition/spectators who you can talk to during and after matches, and figure stuff out with.

Having offline matches help immensely, after 20 games with the same person, you HAVE to figure out new ways to get in and new tricks to win.

Yea but it isn’t easy to just be able to play MvC3 offline whenever you want (well for me at least). I will be doing it probably once a week at gatherings from now one but I wish I knew enough people closer to do it 2-3 times.

I honestly thought I was going to blow compared to the competition yesterday because I mostly play online but I noticed as the day went on and I got use to moves actually coming out when I pressed a button that I was much much better than my retarded ass online.
