Wow I was wondering how to do that lol.
Also, during the button config in training mode, make sure you’ve set it to record for P2 and not for P1 (assuming you’re set as first controller). I say this as somebody who still pulls this trick on himself, like an idiot. “Well, why is my guy still jumping? What is… wait, no, right. Hang on.”
Don’t focus your gameplan around combos. People have this weird train of thought these days where it is anything and everything combos combos combos! Practice set ups, punishes, and spacing more than just combos. Combos are the easy part… but combos are pointless if you can’t put yourself into position to use them. Combos should come naturally… your whole point of the match shouldn’t revolve around landing a certain combo, they should just happen as a result to solid gameplay.
This this this, a million times this!
Thor is a tricky character to use, and it turns off a lot of people not because he is technically bad, it’s just that you really have to relearn the fundamentals from the ground up with him which is sadly too much to ask from alot of the playerbase these days.
Setups, punishes, spacing and execution are all things that need to be drilled to make Thor work. Great thing is, that when it works, it works GREAT. When I win, I usually win pretty big with him. And when I lose, its usually because I got impatient or I just played sloppy. I think Thor will be a character that will shine months down the road when people will have more time to really figure him out. Even simple combos are devestating damage wise with him, and once you get confident in finding openings, THEN the chance for high end combos will come.
I don’t know if people agree, but when I play Thor, it almost feels like I’m playing a hybrid character of Abel and Cammy from SSF4. I could just be crazy, but for some reason it has allowed me to be more comfortable with him.
haha I have always told people the reason I was attracted to Thor was that I played Abel in SF4 and he reminded me of him in someways. You from Seattle? I am from Everett, do you play offline anyway or plan to attend tournies?
Um, I dunno if this is even worth posting but I’ve been able to tick throw people after they block/or don’t block a close D+M. Basically I’m buffering into light command throw. I think the move is like -13 on hit and something around -15 on block. The thing I’m going for is to have whichever command throw (or Mighty Punish) to be active at the exact frame where they’re no longer in block/hit stun. The people it worked on were kinda pissed. If your timing’s off then you’ll throw too early or get hit by something with no invisibility if you’re late. If they push block then all of what I mentioned is a moot point. I know you can already tick throw with crouching jabs but the crouching medium has enough duration for me to kinda think about what I’m gonna do. Just feels like I’m buffering throws like I do in Tekken.
The timing is pretty easy to learn. Just practice on Sentinel. Set him to block EVERYTHING and have him standing. When you’re close and you do crouching medium he’ll crouch block and put that shield up. If your timing on the throw is good, you should never see him stand. There’s actually a frame where you can see the shield he puts up beginning to close. The timing you use changes depending on which throw you use. I usually use light command throw because of the reach. If you use the others you may not be close enough. Oh and the reason I know what Sentinel’s first low blockstun free animation looks like is because I used it with Mighty Punish and the screen stops. If you use light command throw you’ll begin the command throw sooner because it takes like 5 frames to become active. I don’t know how much this helps for the guys who only play online. I live around people who play and I hate lag so I’m always offline. Anyway it’s not something that I think people should be doing all the time but if they know you can do it then it may make them think before trying to attack you.
Nissan: Yeah, I play offline all the time with my friends and coworkers (quite a few MVC players around Boeing), particularly on weekends. I’d love to attend some tournies, but I don’t know of any in my area so I try and run my own, which only draws about 15 people typically and most of them not that great. We should play sometime, would be nice to fight other Thor players without having to brave the online lag.
General: I’ve been really trying to figure out a reliable way to Tiger Knee M. Mighty Strike and use it as a pressure tool kinda like Cammy’s cannon strike, but the input windows in this game make it suprisingly tricky to do, especially online. Anyone have any success with this?
Ebbs: That actually sounds pretty solid. I’ll try and hit the lab tonight when I get off work and see how it works. Thanks for the good ideas!
Something I will add for people who are having troubles with Thor online. It is hard to use Thor’s mix up and reset game effectively online against random players. Why? Most random players aren’t good and literally mashing buttons the entire time. Anytime you are coming down from the air they will sit there below you mashing cr. A A A A A A A A A A A. These players are easy to beat with simple punish tactics but when trying to really improve your Thor game it is hard against people who simply mash and don’t block.
My Thor Reset and Mixups actually work better against better players because they are conditioned to block and actually have some sort of strategy. They pick up your patterns and try to counter them actually making mixups and resets possible. Im not saying you will never land something against bad players… but it far less likely since they will be having a thumb to button orgy with their controller.
So moral of the story if you REALLY want to improve your Thor game beyond simple BnB combos you need to play good players. Otherwise, it is really tough to get any better with Thor. I know this applies to any character, however, I do feel that it is a bit far more stressed with The God of Thunder.
I agree that tiger kneeing mighty strike is pretty hard but the benefits seem like they’re worth it. If you get it to the right height you can get in a weak attack in the air right before landing, essentially turning the move into a tri-dash. Sometimes you end crossing people up too. If you only rely on doing regular jumps to do the move you can be knocked out of the air by a ton of physical attacks, Wolverine and Zero get pretty annoying when it comes to this.
As for getting in on people, I don’t think Thor’s gonna have one set team. I know people don’t like the stigma that comes with Sentinel but ever since I began playing him with Thor, I’m not even sure I need an anti-air anymore. If I have drones behind me as I attack they have to to let me attack otherwise they’ll just be hit moments later. For Wolverine the crossup dash makes him run right into the drones. Just sayin…
Ebbs: Good stuff on the crouching medium canceled into hurricane tick throw.
I was working on something kinda like that. Basically, when you’re close, you can pressure with low short into whatever whatever(cr.H xx Mighty strike, cr.M fly cancel falling J.S, etc etc).
There’s an interesting thing you can do because of how slow his standing H is though. If they are blocking and you do cr.L xx St.H, you can cancel the standing heavy into hurricane before it hits. It looks really quick, and it’s hard for the opponent to gauge what to do.
I am planning on releasing a video for Thor addressing his mobility. Have to record with my webcam, and getting the quality I want out of it is hard.
Basically what it shows is:
- How shitty his dash is
- How good is backdash is
- The tri-jump mixup. (and SJ ad.d mix-up)
- The tri-jump slide that NissanZaxima discovered(this is a huge part of Thor’s Mix-up game)
- Something I call the Trapezoid Jump
Hopefully I’ll have enough time to make more videos, as there’s a lot of cool tricks Thor has.
HOLY SHIT!! This work even if the crouching L hits!!! cr L connects do standing H and L Mighty Hurricane connects! Only the L version does though so far… maybe the others work on different characters but L Mighty Hurricane is the one to do! Since standing H doesn’t combo from cr. L they are out of hit stun almost EXACTLY when you go for the L Mighty Hurricane so it connects.
THe only drawback that if cr. l connects on counter hit then they are in hit stun for too long and the L Mighty hurricane won’t connect.
Still this is an awesome tool! You can tri dash L, cr. L, st. H >cancel into L Mighty Hurricane! This helps open up Thor’s offense more GREAT find.
I am so pumped I will be practicing this all night
EDIT: I think I figured it out. I think L Mighty Hurricane will only work because it has the longest startup out of the 3 (H=1, M=3, L=5). The extra startup frames allow for the hit stun to recover just long enough so the L Mighty Hurricane will connect.
If you land Triangle jump L, cr. L, st. H>L Mighty Hurricane then do a basic BnB follow up you are doing right around 800K damage. If you land 1 reset in between then I am pretty sure you can take out most of the cast if you can successfully land this Delayed Hit Stun Recovery throw??? Haha I am so geeked about this I have no idea what to call it.
EDIT #2: Another nifty treat about this whole deal… you know how a lot of the time when you cross up with triangle dash L cr. L you are far away so cr. M won’t connect? You have to use cr. H for it to connect from that range. Well if you cross up Tri dash L, Cr l, St H>Cancel into L Mighty Hurrican is still connects even though Thor looks to far away to grab! I have been practicing this a lot and I have missed the Mighty Hurricane only once.
You should always use cr.H after cr.L, simply because of the damage. The problem is that in laggy situations it is actually hard to do lol
True. I just like cr M because it is only -5 on block opposed to -13 or whatever for H. Sometimes when i get really into a match I can’t hit confirm that well so it helps if I fuck up lol. I have been practicing HC in the danger room though so I can switch over to cr H.
Oh and I was wondering if I could help you on the video you were making? Maybe help you map out everything crucial (so far) to Thor’s gameplay. I have become pretty attached to this character because everyone says he fucking sucks and I want to prove them wrong because frankly, I think they are… I don’t think he is one of the best characters in the game but far from “ass” as everyone is making him out to be. So yea I want to help get the info out about Thor as well.
I’d have to test it, but I think you can actually do cr.L, cr.M, (slight delay) cr.H (kara xx) L Hurricane and it’ll work, too. Also, if you get good at tk’ing your Mighty Strikes such that you can do them (especially L and M) just a couple inches from the ground, you can tick throw with tk’ed Mighty Strike into Hurricane or Punish.
I’ve been trying out a few partners for Thor, as well, with some interesting findings:
- Thor can get a lot of mileage out of Chris’s grenade (landmine) assist. Their DHCs are crap for the most part, but both do a lot of damage and it really is a useful assist, so I recommend giving it a try.
- Thor and Spencer turn out to make a pretty good pairing. Spencer’s slanted grab assist can snag people trying to jump toward or away from Thor if they’re not blocking, and since it pulls them in and leaves them standing, you can grab out of it. You can also do an air combo, knock them down, call Spencer, and otg Mighty Smash in the corner for a fun reset. Moreover, Thor can Mighty Tornado out of a Bionic Lancer hit, or Mighty Punish out of a Bionic Lancer block if you learn the timing, because Spencer keeps traveling in the punch animation well after the active frames of the single hit of the hyper, and he’s literally right next to the opponent as he does it. So you can learn when the block stun ends, and DHC to Mighty Punish while they’re still “blocking” his fist.
- Thor and Akuma have an interesting trick similar to the above. It requires 4 meters, but if you need a quick burst of damage, it might be worth it. If you throw out a Mighty Thunder hyper (shockwave) in a telegraphed way so your opponent blocks it from about 1/4 screen’s distance or greater, you can time a DHC into Akuma’s Raging Demon so that he hides behind the lightning pillars and hits the opponent. What’s interesting about this is that, on block, the graphics of the pillars stay on top of the opponent longer than the hitboxes do, so if you time it right Akuma will literally grab them while a lightning pillar is actually covering both characters. Incidentally, a similar thing is possible with the ending explosion of Hulk’s Gamma Crush on block.
Nice find guys, I was working on something similar ,tronn bonne will do the similar shield thing to show the blocking/end of blockstun I was trying to find a way to triangle jump tick throw, but instead of trying to use the character as a gauge its way better to use the end of our own move dig it.
Speaking of his mobility, are most Thor players here taking advantage of his ability to Fly-Dash? If you don’t know what I’m talking about:
I use this a lot to time down Sentinel’s x-factor. I’m using it here, 1 minute, 50 seconds in:
Yeah st.H is his second best kara cancel for his command grab. Do you have the official guide? It mentions a similar tactic involving Thor’s cr.L->st.H string
The guide mentions the mixup (on hit or block) of:
cr.L->command throw
cr.L->st.H
You basically want to abuse cr.L->command throw until the opponent figures it out and starts mashing a fast attack to beat the throw. Thor can beat the mashing by substituting his st.H instead. If the opponent tries to mash then the st.H will counter hit and allow Thor to juggle with M Mighty Smash into combo.
The guide also suggests using cr.L->(delayed)cr.M in order to beat anyone who tries to f+H command throw Thor out of the above mixup.
Holy shit! That fly-dash technique is pretty impressive, as is your Thor play in general. Lots of great discoveries this day! Kudos.
Gotta say, guys: Thor may be one of the most dismissed characters by the community at large, but I think he’s got one of the tightest, most creative, most dedicated fan communities of any in the game. If you go back and peruse the history of this thread since release, some really impressive knowledge has been accumulated. Props to everyone.
I agree. This is the best character specific MvC3 forum from what I have seen. Most of the other character specific forums it is literally all combos combos combos and nothing else. This one we actually find set ups and new technology for our character. Thor forum FTW
