FEEL HEAVEN'S WRATH: Thor Thread Reloaded

So on the subject of Thor’s assist…Who works well with Thor. By reading the comments, Dormammu works well with Thor? I’m not the only one right? Because I picked Dorm due to not being easy, he’s not in most people’s top 10 online picks, and he’s Dormammu dammit! Great design and Dr. Strange’s greatest nemesis. But anywho, Dorm just shuts people down and helps wonderfully with Thor.

Like I’ve mention’d before, I got Spencer on my team (another semi difficult character), and either of his wire grapple assist helps bring the opponent, right into Thor’s world.

Also, the more I’m trying out Thor’s normals…they great…when there active frames. Because of his slow startup frames, they feel horrible. But once his active frames come out, they do have better priorities over other characters. You just gotta pick your move before hand on what you want. Alot of lab time will be spent on figuring this shit out.

I like Tron. Her Gustaf Flame assist has great invulnerability, so it’s very easy to make your approaches safe. You can do triangle dash mixups safely behind it, or air dash -> :h: or :s: type stuff.

Also, let’s say you do a :f::d::df::h: OTG, you can then call Tron assist and go for the air throw reset. It’s crazy safe.

It’s hitstun is also very short when it completes, making it easy to throw off it as well.

And it’s a great “get off me” assist if you’re being pressured.

So basically you play Thor/Tron just like Justin Wong’s She-Hulk/Tron.

I also initially went with Thor/Haggar, but imo if your cover assist gets knocked out, the approach becomes much harder for BOTH Thor and Haggar. Plus because of Haggar’s lack of mobility in the air, has has to basically openly jump/superjump at people, and that’s not terribly safe. Maybe my pipe spacing isn’t what it should be, but that’s my experience so far. Tron has good health, good damage, and an excellent “pin-down” assist, not unlike Haggar. Plus she has some better air approaches and options with her airdash or strike.

IMO, Tron gives you more options with a Thor team, right now I’m working on Thor/Doom/Tron. Spark/Hidden Missiles/Flame assists.

I would agree for the same reasons you mentioned. Haggar is a weaker ‘point man’ then Tron overall and needs more assist backup. Thor/Tron/Doom is the team I’m playing too, although I’m using Mighty Smash as Thor’s assist. I may change that though with some more play, as it’s mostly just pushing people away at the moment.

Really I feel that Tron + Doom is a solid base for just about any team. You’re combining two of the best assists in the game (at their respective roles), and both characters are solid on their own. Doom + Tron has some gross rushdown with dash cancels as well.

I’d take that as a compliment if it were true, haha. I definitely picked up a lot for Tron’s assist from watching Winterbrawl 5.

@Kjunk:

The reason I didn’t go for Mighty Smash assist is because of the ground bounce factor, and Tron really doesn’t need more ways to bounce. Plus, I found that Spark assist in the corner allows you to complete the Clakey D combo reset if you time it right. I can Tron command grab in corner, OTG D + H, F + H while calling Thor, and his Spark assist lasts long enough to combo into H Beacon Bomb, giving you a reset and a free combo. Just like Sent Drones assist. So because of the slow speed for Spark and the long duration once it comes out, it allows you to setup stuff just like Sent. Not too shabby for a character once considered bottom tier.
Plus, it gives you a decent projectile assist while freeing you up to use Doom Hidden Missiles.

Awesome, thanks for the explanation. I looked it up on YouTube and found a video explaining the combo you described : . Basically just pretend the Sentinel Drone assist is Thor’s Mighty Spark instead? That’s pretty awesome.

Exactly, now I was trying it off of the command grab, but the theory is the same, OTG, then call in assist while she does the boulder to keep them in hitstun, then Beacon Bomb.

is there an online frame data for thor?

The one problem with using hidden missiles and thor instead of beam. Is you’ll never get in against strong keepaway. Hidden missiles are great if you can keep away, but thor gets out beamed by most characters, its better to use doom beam imo…

I’m just going by what was said earlier in the thread by ogrimtitan. Besides, the goal isn’t to out-zone anybody with Missiles, but rather to create a short period where I can cover Doom with Spark, then get the missiles out. Of course it’s all a work in progress.

Doom’s Hidden Missiles as an assist helps you safely move across the screen. Your opponent has to be careful with the zoning moves they use because even if they force you to block, they can be punished for it. In most cases they just wait for the missiles to land before doing anything (if they notice them), which gives you time to move in safely.

They also have to hold off on starting combos or cut combos short because the missiles will interrupt them.

Whereas Tron’s assist gives you up-close options to get people off you, or mixup/stay in on your opponent, Hidden Missiles helps you get into that position in the first place.

Other assists certainly work with Thor… just pointing out why I like those two.

Has anybody tried using Akuma with his tatsu assist? He seems like a decent character overall and may compliment Thor pretty well.

I’ve been running a team of Thor/Mags/Akuma with tatsu assist, So far I like Mags beam assist for dealing with people trying to zone out Thor. I use Akuma’s assist to try and push opponents to the corner where Thor can really screw up their day.

My team is Thor/Deadpool(triggerHappy)/Wolverine(tornado Claw for the gtfo me assist) for the most part, I also run with Thor/Amaterasu(Cold Star)/Wolverine/spidey Depends who I am facing

Both those teams seem strong, though actually using deadpool katanrama could help for better combos for thor, and different resets. Also lets you combo off his reg airthrow if you get one randomly.

Hey, thanks for the props, man. Thor’s just been one of my favorite characters since I was a little, little kid, and I grew up playing fighting games, so it was a good combination (I do wish the devs had been a little kinder to Thor, though).

As to your question:
I started just in training with the dummy and air recovery set to off. Simple air combos ending in Mighty Strike into the reset techniques I described. Then I moved on to setting air recovery to backward for a while to practice that option. Then to forward. And finally to random to get used to a more dynamic opponent. Whenever I’m going to practice it, I always start (now) with that random setting. If I’m feeling good about it, I’ll test against CPU opponents of different difficulty levels, but this is a mixed blessing, since the AI reads your inputs and can counter far more perfectly than any human opponent. This works in your favor in improving your timing and execution, but against you in that it limits your creativity and intuition. Ultimately, there is obviously no substitute for human opponents, but the above is a good place to start.

Cheers!

So another All day Thor fest and I have to be honest hes still my favorite character but damn its hard to get consistent wins with the big guy. Ive pretty much perfected the triangle jump into Mighty Hurricane I can do it real time results were surprisingly good. Still having issues with the CH into Kara Mighty Hurricane though. After going 40w/25L I can pretty much confirm a fully charged mighty strikes beats out EVERYTHING short of supers. Im talking gamma wave camma charge chris’s magnum and tons of other crap. I didnt get a chance to test it on sent though. Fighting Hulk and sentinel is really hard for me atm because im always trying to predict what there gonna do and mighty strike my way through it or using it to get close. During these fights Thors Speed becomes painfully obvious as does his lack of any type of armored normal… The speedsters I can usually time and just punish them for jumping in with MS or A well timed C.M… but against armored attacks like hulks standing H or Sents launcher its rough any tips? Lastly Whats the best way to get the otg on Mighty smash I kept missing it all day using H punch Mighty Smash. and if it connects can I mighty hurricane off of it?

After a H MS jump up right away wait a milasec then grab them again.

Actually, I’ve been wondering about this one myself. Is anybody out there running with this super for, well, for anything? (DHCing in with it hadn’t occurred to me, but then, I never have Thor anywhere but on point.)
