Features you do NOT want to see in modern fighting games

wait i thought we all LOVED CVS2’s announcer.
I love him at least.

I think announcers may be counter-intuitive during a match because after playing a game 200 hours what fresh match commentary is left?

Yeah, the CVS2 announcer is affably terrible, just like every voice in that game (sonic BEUUUUGH), which I think is about the peak of announcer technology until we can download Yipes into an AI to do it.

CvS2’s announcer is loved because of the music that played when he talked. If he talked with, lets say, Bloody Roar 4 music, no one would like him. But since the CvS2 music is all hype his voice adds to the charm. Listen and tell me that isn’t true http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klSAOwXxX-E

Givin yipes mad head, and guile sounds more like SHEA CAPUUU

[]Regenerating health.
[
]Those dumb contests where the guy who spun the joystick or mashed the buttons faster and / or more scores the damage. This is a fighting game, not Mario Party.
[*]Free combo escapes a la “Substitution Jutsu” from Naruto games

Corners you can freaking jump into when your opponent’s back is to it.

AKA WHATS THE FUCKIN POINT OF THE CORNER

One of the many reasons I don’t play SF4.

There’s a number of other anime games that do that shit too. Shit, you can teleport behind someone in the corner in MvC3, that’s just fucking retarded.

ummm…dark phoenix, kung lao, mk, and v-13. yeah…that’s all i got.

[]Stage Hazards (DoA, MK, etc.)

[*]I know it’s not really a feature per se but magic pixels in fighting games annoy me to no end. **

This, one of the reason why I liked cornering my self was to prevent cross up scenarios. While a few games have this and I subtly deal with it, I prefer this doesn’t become a trend.

So you weren’t being sarcastic when you said you like to be cornered?

  • Power ups that are reliant on how much damage you took in the round, or eleventh hour’s superpowers in general.

  • Hitstop in general. I once thought it could serve a purpose in balancing characters with unsafe transitions from forcing a block to hitconfirming, but I always only see it used on the characters that don’t need it anyway considering the gigantic hitstun on their attacks, so what’s the fucking point except making easy characters even easier. Might as well just forget the concept entirely.

  • Wake-up rolls.

  • BnBs on throws (except in rare occasions where it makes sense - it makes sense in a game like MvC3 for example, because the damage from a single throw would be too low) - also throws that don’t cause a knockdown (which only happens in the games that want to let you combo after it anyway).

  • BnBs that are wayyy too long. I don’t dislike huge damage, I just dislike comboes that last over 10 seconds. It’s really distracting and breaks the pace of the match a little too much.

  • Additional rock paper scisor bullshit like TACs.

  • Reversals - now I don’t want to see them gone entirely, mind you, but I think a recent trend in fighting games is making reversals fucking everywhere, for every character, and some even make it part of the goddamn core system, like guard cancels in arcana heart 3 (which arguably needs it, but still) or bunkers in ye ol’ MB. I’m going to get flak for this, like “lol bait more scrub”, but really, I believe it is a problem in recent years.

Alpha counters<>Reversals.
I really don’t understand what’s wrong with alpha counters since you pay precious super meter just to switch the momentum.
Also by your logic Baiken is a broken character since she has free alpha counters but she isn’t.

How and where did I say that having a reversal/counter makes a character broken ?

I swear you always try to stretch my logic WAY beyond what I actually said.

Also, the “precious meter” arguement really depends on the actual availability of meter in the game. In AH3 meter is pretty cheap, the opportunity cost is really low.

Absolutely, i also found it easier to measure distance in corner due to restricted space. It has its pros and cones in some games, more cons in general though.

Edit:

Can you list the games that have implemented these and they became a problem?

Definitely crossing up in the corner. Not only is it weird that you can do that, but more often than not it leads to really stupid things happening with ambiguous left right. SF4 has a ton of this, but I think AH3 has a really stupid amount of bullshit. So many moves can both crossup or not depending on a very small difference in the angle of approach.

Don’t worry dude, it’s how SRK always does things.

Welcome BTW.

That’s a part of why I stick to 2D fighters. Not as many games with hazards in them.

Personally, I hate the CvS2 announcer and I think “true love we’re making” is one of the cheesiest arcade themes ever created. On the other hand “Fight with the wind” is one of my favourite themes.

try playing May and Venom on GG without Hitstop, good luck with that
