if DSP makes the list, then Buktooth and AfroLegends should be on that list too
Cole,
Does a brotha “still” need to get paid this August? :wgrin:
NKI,
I applaud you for trying to do this. It’s impossble making 100% people happy.
I think you’re best bet would be to have regionals before this. Like SBO quals around the country. Socal, Nocal, Midwest, EC, etc. Just little 8 man RRs and take the top two. Because you could assume that the top 2 from each RR is “the best” in their section of the US, and fair indicators of top play.
I dunno if FF even has ST anymore (Cole?). But this way you could widdle that 32 top player list down to something managable and work from there.
And who knows, maybe if Family Fun has an ST qualifier, Neil and Zazza will come out and see me:)
But to get people hype, you got to have a Wrestling Belt for the winner. Cole plays crazy when there’s a belt to win.
-Vix
Keep it simple. There is no reason to have qualifiers for this. Just pick the best that are there at the time and then let some ppl battle it out for a few of the other spots.
K.I.S.S. = Keep it simple stupid!
Here is who i think should be in there. Bassed what i saw last year at evo and who i still playing.
- Watson
- Valle
- Cole
- Choi
- Sirlin - Only american to beat Gian in the 3v3 from EVO-05
- Justin Wong - He took home last years MWC
- David Spence
- NKI
- Jumpsuit Jessie - If he actualy shows up
- Afro Legends - I dont think im the only one that thinks he is one strong bastard and deservs a spot.
The list of alternate for the last 5 could get tather long.
- CigarBoB - Cuz I am the MAN! In order or manlyness it is Chuck Norris then ME.
- Apoc - He wasn’t any where near his dominating self last year that is why i didn’t put him on my list.
- Alex Wolf - only cuz they have been out of the sceen for soo long
- Grahm Wolf - See above
- BuckTooth
- Shirts
- DreamTR
- S-Kill
- Jessie Howard
- Wes Truelson
Im sure there are more but i just cant think of them.
If we are at 10 ppl for the last 5 spots just match ppl up and have them play for the spots.
Whoops, my bad! Because I already said 5 spots, I’m going to keep it at 5 spots and just bump the cap up to 16.
I heart you too.
I’m not saying they’re the best ever, but I consider them ST Godfathers because they place well in virtually every tourney they enter, and because they’ve been doing that for some years now.
It’s not that I’ve forgotten the old school fools, it’s that I never knew them. I just started playing ST a few years ago, so I’ve never seen you or your brother play (not even so much as a vid online). But if you’re practicing with Choi and Sirlin, I have no doubt that you guys are good.
I think you’re totally taking it the wrong way when I say that Japan is better. I have never said anything even close to “America blows”. I give props to all the top US players, but I have to keep it real; I’m not gonna lie and say that the US is better just 'cause I’m American.
Anyway, let’s just agree to disagree, 'cause I don’t want this to be a USA vs. Japan thread.
Buktizzle, you crack me up!!
Gotta wait for the Evo schedule to be released before we make anything final. As for ECC, I’d definitely be down, but it would need its own thread, 'cause it would get too confusing if we talked about it here.
Like I said earlier, by nominating those people, I am not saying they are better than everyone else. All I’m saying is that I would like to see them in this tourney. There will be 5 spots up for grabs for whoever is hungry enough to take them.
We could run into a problem with that, though. What if one qualifying tourney turns out to be remarkably easier to win than another qualifying tourney? That wouldn’t be fair to the people who had to try to qualify through the harder one. I’d rather have just one qualifying tourney to determine the remaining 5 spots, so that everyone has a fair shot.
No offense, but AfroLegends, Justin, Spence? LOL, that’s fucking funny. Maybe Justin. But Afro and Spence? Do some research on the players who had consistent top 5 tourney (nationals and sbo qualifying) performances against top players in the arcade version over a number of years before posting this bullshit.
Fucking console shouldn’t even count.
NKI, trust me, the Wolfe brothers are good. They could easily be on the original list. Inherently, I would put them ahead of most based on pure skill recognition.
Afrolegends instead of me? That guy couldn’t even play me in our “grudge match” because his Pelican stick didn’t work on any PS2 in the entire hall and he refused to play on cab.
And I’d be happy to destroy Justin Wong in an ST playoff if you think that will make me more legit for the round robin…
Anyways feel free to leave me out if you want, I’ll just play in singles, but I thought the whole gist of this thing was to prove that NKI and I were fluke placings last year…
Shirts - I believe you, but unfortunately they haven’t been in the ST tourney scene for quite a while now, so I didn’t have anything recent that I could go on when I made the initial list.
But not to worry. It’s for this very reason that I’m leaving those 5 spots up for grabs. I know there are players (other than the ones I listed) who deserve spots, and so they will have the opportunity to snag those spots.
DSP - You are correct; this is basically to see if last years results were a fluke or not, so you definitely have a spot reserved.
This should be renamed to NKi’s private tournament to be honest…No offense NKI, you can do what you want at your tournament, but some of those people do NOT deserve sports, and Shirts has a point. Arcade placings in tournaments>>>>console. Also, as for your “initial” list, I haven’t placed lower than 4th in an ST tourney in many years, and I play with the top comp, and can beat/hang with the top comp. If you check my tournament results, and Shirts can vouch for me on this, I have beaten many of the top players in tournaments on your list, and have winning records against them as a matter of fact…how one PS1 console tournament changes the face of that for everyone, I have no idea.
Everyone needs to do research on arcade tournament placings over console. Spence, Justin, DSP, Aforlegends, all beefed up because of the PS1 thing. Choi, Watson, Seth, out because of non uppercutting and the PS1 factor. Simple as that. Texas Showdown proved the top players are still old school, regardless of any excuses I am going to hear.
DSP: Justin won ECC and MWC last year…he’s done a lot more than you have in ARCADE tournaments for ST. This is just fact. I am 100% certain Justin would gladly play you for money in ST.
DSP: If you can get top 4 at MWC with switch sticks like we will have, or top 4 at ECC with decent players, then I can see your point, but until then, you’re still the PS1 Champ.
Dream - I agree with you that console is the suck, but I think maybe you’re missing the point of this tourney. I want to see how “flukesters” such as DSP, Buktooth, and myself can do in the arcade version against America’s current best. All the recent losses for the old schoolers (or all the recent wins for the new schoolers, however you want to look at it) keep getting chalked up to console, so we’re going to see if that’s really the case.
The reason why DSP, Buk, and myself got spots is precisely because we did well in a console tourney; I am not saying that that proves we’re better than the old schoolers.
If anything, if any of the three of us end up placing well in this thing, and if one of us WINS it…
…all the OG players should just retire, and I’d better NEVER hear shit talk about us again. I know that myself, and Buk, have gotten zero real practice at ST since basically EVO. I don’t even think Buk has played since last EVO, shit. But on the other hand, I was at TS6 and I saw Choi, Valle, Cole playing hardcore in casuals…and I’m sure they’re playing more at home…
And anyone who is going to argue that I got owned in ST at TS6 is an idiot, because I went into the thing saying I wasn’t even focusing on it and didn’t plan on even really playing hard at all. What happened? I did really well in MvC2, which I was focused on at the time (since it was the first tournament pool I actually got to play in, and spent about 2 1/2 hours on it to fight my way out of it). I didn’t even touch ST since it wasn’t put into the machine until I was already playing MvC2, and then I played something like 4 ST matches back to back. Actually, now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t even remember who I lost to in ST besides that Guile player. I was so out of it by then, after having about 3 hours sleep the night before sleeping on a floor, and then playing 5+ hours of tournaments back to back, I honestly can’t even fucking remember the ST tournament! Come on man, Vega vs Guile and I lose, do you honestly think I’d lose that match? It’s called low roundhouse ALL DAY. I don’t even remember what I was doing…
The bottom line is that TS6 was pretty disappointing this year because things weren’t run as well as last, I don’t call having me play in every single game back to back in the span of 5 hours fair…and then making ST last is just ridiculous. Why ST wasn’t run before A3 is totally beyond me. When I brought up the issue with tournament staff? “Next year enter less games.” Not sure how valid of an argument that is, telling people who go to your tournament not to enter games…but I’m not going to crap all over my Texas friends because I know they worked their butts off, had a lot of problems, and I love them to death.
NOW, if you want to test me in ST, if I go to MWC this year that is all I will be focusing on. I’m not even going to pretend that I’m going to do anything in ANY game at ECC this year because honestly, since I’ll be running so much shit, I doubt I’ll be able to throw a fireball by the time I get to play my matches. And definitely at EVO, once I get a few days practice in on Bob’s cab (like I did last year) I will be in good tournament condition again.
Remember, it’s real easy to sit at home and be an armchair quarterback, I know. But don’t go around validating things like they mean anything… I haven’t actually “played” ST on any competitive level since maybe the final match of NEC (me vs. Jeron where I went all Vega for the finals). Everything after that has just been fluff, I’ve been trying to get into competitive shape in games like MvC2, 3s and CvS2, because at least those games give me something to play when ST isn’t getting any love at tournaments other than EVO.
NKI: It’s not “just” because it was console. It was more of a comfortable feel of the cabinet. You need something stable and stationary, and uniform to play on. Even CigarBob’s cabinet is not the regulation arcade size. It’s still on a Super Gun, on a Tv set, and it’s sitdown from far away. It’s a GREAT cabinet, no doubt, and it will showcase to players more, but even so, the only real way to show who the best are is by doing this on a regular arcade machine.
Choi is the biggest proponent of needing uppercuts to win…if he is not used to that, it’s going to allow free jump ins while he has to sit on the floor.
I am not saying you guys are “flukesters”, I know Buktooth, yourself, and DSP have improved dramatically…but there are names not on there that should be on there if you are considering people that are currently playing or not playing.
If Shirts and I can get get Jabari Bain out of hiding, we can assure you he can beat everyone on that list except for two people with new Guile. If you want to see the Guile from hell (and yes, it is a copy of Watson’s OG style Guile, they played at the same arcade) then you should allow people to extend invites, or bring this up to 32. 32 is a LOT more exciting for something like this…
DSP: No one really “practices” ST anymore. The last time I remember Cole playing was in a GZX tournament over here. Valle might still play randomly on his cabinet, but I think it’s safe to say EVERYONE plays it sparingly to say the least. Shirts live across the street from me, so he comes over once in awhile and we play for 30 minutes and go about our normal business…
If anything, ST at MWC is going to be between Jesse Howard, Seth, NKI, and Justin just like last year, sans no NKI last year…
I can use a million excuses too, like me not using vega or Bison at EVL on console because I was too stupid and wanted to use Chun-LI, who seemed really different to me, but that’s besides the point. There’s always someone better than us no matter what way we look at it, and some to players we can beat, but we might lose to some lesser players. It’s all relative and in good fun, but I can assure you, MWC has always been OG winning until last year Jesse lost to Justin. If Watson goes to MWC, he will not lose. He’s NEVER lost a MWC when he has attended, but it’s hard to get old men to come to tourneys these days…
This thread is hot!
Well, I think you should have a big list, like 32, then take top players from various turneys.
If they have ST at ECC, take the top two from there.
Then ST at MWC, take top 2 from there.
Then a random ST turney in Socal, and anyone qualified already will be eliminated from the potential list, and take tops from there.
I dunno, Cigarbob wants to KISS me, which is flattering, but you have WAY to many top ST players to pick from.
Or, you know, just wait until EVO and then do this. Of course, then it is “Who is America’s Best ST Player who is at EVO2K6?”
And to DSP, I **know **you want to focus on ST at EVO this year, but don’t forget that little game you used to love called XvSF. It’ll be going down again and no more Juggs/Sabre for you. Top tier only!
I definitely don’t deserve a spot for this tourney. I haven’t done shit in this game. But I’ll gladly participate in the round robbin to see if I can snatch one of the remaining spots. It’s all good.
:karate:
NKI, be careful. Holding this shit will get players practicing together and then no win for Japan at Evo in ST:(
What is wrong with:
Team Console Warriors: Buktooth, DSP, NKI, Afrolegends, The Honda guy
Team OG: Choi, Valle, Cole, Watson, Wilson
5v5, 25 matches, 3/5 normal ST tourney rules (instead of one char as other team tournies are done). Feel free to change the team names too if you want.
This is shorter and a lot easier to run than what you were originally intending, but i think it serves the same purpose.
I say if your going to put all this work into something, and now you don’t have to run 190 matches, just have a 2nd event to solve the ('best in the US / beating japan/ etc… issues on the thread).
Instead of team japan, make it an international team, i’m sure enough will come if it’s japan + anyone else good at ST that goes. If too many come, they will need a qualifier too.
For Team US, everyone on the list is invited, and there will be one dbl elim tournament to choose the team. It won’t be 100% accurate but who cares, whoever wins wins and we can’t run 5 tournaments all weekend. Since there are 2 5th place finishers in dbl elim, they will fight each other for the final spot.
What up afro! :razzy:
I totally agree with you that comfort is extremely important, but you have to realize, not everyone enjoys playing on a standard arcade cabinet. I know I’m not the only one who would much rather play on CigarBoB’s cabinet, and that’s for several reasons:
-I get to use Japanese sticks
-seats are at the perfect height
-I don’t like being squished up shoulder-to-shoulder with my opponent (unless it’s dog-face)
GET HIM OUT OF HIDING!!
32 is also a lot more impossible. That’d be 496 sets, which is nuts. (Keep in mind that I will only have one cabinet to use.) We’ve gotta keep the numbers reasonable. With the current number (16), we have to run 120 2-out-of-3 sets, which is a lot, but feasible, I think.
Go go go Watson!!
I think qualifiers are a cool idea, but I just want to make sure everyone has an equal shot at those last 5 spots. It could turn out to be really lop-sided if (for example) tons of people show up to ECC and the competition is really fierce, but not so many people show up to MWC, and getting top two is comparatively easy.
Another reason to do it at Evo is because it’d be kind of pointless assigning spots to people who end up not even going to Evo. :wasted:
…? I’d be thrilled if we could stop Japan from winning ST…I don’t quite understand your comment…:wtf:
FMJ - I’d be all for that idea, but don’t you think that the excitement level and hype is directly proportional to the number of players?
I just meant that this tournament is just one more reason ST is going to be much more fierce this year. I don’t even know what the resurgeance is about but it seems as though America’s ST players are seriously going to get down this year:clap:
