We decided on an event rather different from what I originally suggested, so here is the updated info:
-Team Flukesters-
DSP
Buktizzle
NKI
Peter H.
afro legends
-Team WeGotRobbed-
Watson
Choi
Cole
Sirlin
Wilson
-Rules-
-$25/head ($125/team), winning team takes all.
-Each member of Team Flukesters will play each member of Team WeGotRobbed in a 3-out-of-5 set, for a total of 25 sets.
-The team that wins 13 or more sets wins the tourney.
-All matches will be played on the arcade version, on CigarBoB’s incredibly sexy cabinet.
-Players are not forced to stick to one character throughout the tournament, but if you win a match, you must stick with that character for the next match. The loser has the option to switch characters.
-If necessary, double-blind pick will be enforced for the first match of a set.
-There is no one-character limit per team. Watson and Choi can both choose Ryu; Buk and myself can both choose Chun.

I’ll think of a few others.
This is a great idea. I want to know who really is the best definatively. I would suggest 2 out of 3 just for time constraints. I’m more concerned with how effective players are instead of how proficient they are at all characters. I think 3 out of 5 will cause a lot of counter matches. For example. Everyone knows Cole uses Dhalsim. Knowing this, a player could go straight to Chun Li since they have to lose 3 times. A counter match might be a good idea. Knowing this, Cole might start with Sagat vs a player like NKI whose Chun Li seems stronger every year. I hope that I am making sense. I usually believe that the more matches there are the clearer the winner is. In this case, it might just show who is more proficient with more characters. I want to see the masters more than the jacks of all trades.
Another suggestion would be that we nominate and vote for a certain ammount. I think 32 man would be perfect and 16 too little. To fill out the 32 I suggest having wildcard spots that players can earn at ECC and MWC and maybe local tournaments in areas like Nor/SoCal and NY.
If this is going to happen, we should make it a sticky. It would also be interesting to have the Japanese nominate some players that they’ve seen. Then the top 3 could go against a 3 man Japanese team on the big screen for a 15 minute hardcore exhibition provided that players like Gian and Daigo attend.
I would go to Evolution just to see this. I only see one problem. How would we set it up so that players could watch without crowding the matches. I want to see this go down but I don’t want smother the players either.
Damn! I’m sure I missed plenty of people. My bad. How good is Jet-Phi? I was just trying to name top players and those that have placed top 5 in tournaments in the last 5 years. Sorry I missed Jet-Phi. I’ll edit. Just out of curiosity, has Jet-Phi beaten any top players?
Round robin sucks past 8 or so people, and i doubt youll get a inclusive list down to 8
Some of the people on your list agree that a ‘best in ST’ tourney is more hype than reality, a lot of the players are at the point where a single tourney isn’t going to solve being the best. Someone would almost need to go back and compile the ST results of every evo/mwc/ecc/national/special events and see who has the best track record.
At the last STEVO/3AMHP/whatever else meeting i thought there was already a 32 man invitational, i thought that was the better format, so i’m not sure where this idea came from.
Round Robin wouldn’t suck. Especially when we can define a US ST champ and $800. I’m sure people talk enough shit to spend a couple of hours backing it up for $800 and a year of bragging rights. This would be the first time the champ would have faced every great player to be king of the mountain. Way better than an invitational in my opinion.
I would like to attend a round robin tournament on st, that would be pretty fun. I’ve never been in a round robin tournament but it sounds like a good way to judge a players overall skill.
TheGrape1 - Whoa…that list is WAAAY too long for a round robin tourney. I agree that all of those people are talented ST players, but we need to keep this capped at 10. You need to keep in mind that the number of sets for a round robin tourney is (n-1)(n), so if we have only 10 people, that’s already 90 sets, each of which could go a full 5 matches. And that’s not taking into account that there will almost certainly be ties.
No? Other than the ones I listed in my first post, can you think of many more players who have consistently placed top 3 all through their career?
I’m not so much interested in seeing who has the best track record. We already have a pretty good idea of that. I’m more interested in seeing who the current best ST player is.
That was a fun little tourney, but it didn’t really determine any kind of serious ranking, other than that Valle is a beast. (It was single elimination, by the way.)
I will have only 2 cab’s running for my tournies all weekend and 2 for casual play. There will be a third but that is not my cab. And he will be doing his own games.
Any how. NKI if you want to set this up i will be more then happy to let you use one of the cabs for as long as you need to complete it. But i would like to see 15 man min and 2/3 insted of 3/5. That would save a ton of time. And I would like to have a spot as well i dont really know if im qualified to be in it. But I would love the chance to prove what i can do.
I’m just confused as to where your going with this. If it’s a definitive RR style championship, thegrape1 is right IMO, you would need more of the list than you stated. Some people that are not on your list are active and practing ST regularly,
I don’t think you can trim the list down to 10 and still call it a championship. I mean Graham is up for it, but i’m not sure he would even be in the tourney if your going to give spots to DSP, then yourself, then prolly buk because he placed the same as you, etc… There would be so much fighting over the 10 spots that it wouldn’t even be a recognized tournament by the time it’s done.
Don’t think that going to RR solves the complaints, it just creates a whole new set of complaints because it puts more strain on the equipment, staff, and especially with players not even getting to play.
Why solve problems that don’t exist? PS1 was a problem, so now it will be arcade, equipment/time will be a new problem, so it has to be capped somewhere, and if the cap is 32 or lower, it’ll probably have to be an invitational. IMO Bracketing is not a major problem if your just trying to find the champion. Are there other problems i’m missing? Tournaments went to RR Pools to give travelling people more matches, not to find a champion.
I was referring to this year. I was saying that i thought this was a dead issue, team ST so everyone who wants to play OG style can have at it a little. And some form of restricted singles (cap, invitational, I wouldn’t even say for sure until an evo schedule is released and you know what kinda time and space your working with).
sounds a good idea… im all new to the big tournaments as coming from the UK and nowhere nr. London, we only play small local events. Only big tournament action we see is what can be d/l and bought through US/JAP sites.
Isnt there a league that adds a league table or event table… i guess theres no table as MLGpro is more focused on pc and new video games… is there anyhing that monitors these sort of tournaments? World-Wide/US/JAP/EURO?
Actually Neil I was impressed, last year your N.Ken kicked some serious ass in the tournament and you were only 1-2 close matches away from getting top 8 yourself…I would say you deserve to be there, and NOT just because you make and donate awesome cabs.
I’m all for this idea, set it up and I’m there. Even if I don’t win it will be a lot of fun and at least I’ll get to play all the top ST comp.
