The key to success is probably choosing the right moderators and rules.
For example, dustloop is pretty strict on closing, deleting, and infracting nongameplay related posts. I dont know how much that helps them, but it certainly gives the site a unique tone.
Active and mature moderators will make a site a place where people want to hang out.
I was really looking forward to playing Hwa Jai. Well, I hope it ain’t that bad. Out of all of the FF characters that I wanted to return to the newer games, he was on the top of my list. I’ll still try him anyway. Adel? Intresting. I wonder if they will have any other unlockable characters? Anyway, that’s a good thing if XIII is different from XII, especially in combo linking. Man I swear, you can pretty much link anything into everything in XII. Hopefully they’ll make you work harder for those moves in XIII.
It’s a simple site which features a home page, a featured videos page, a forum and a wiki. I’ve structured it in a way that should serve both the experienced players and the new faces. I haven’t started on the wiki yet. The forums are up and running. I had a few people from this thread look over what I’ve done and per their suggestions I restructured the forum to put greater emphasis on KoFXIII and added a social section as well. This site is in beta stage as I still need to figure out how to get the forum and wiki to open in a new window as there’s no easy way to get back to the home page from either of those pages. I’m new to Wordpress and PHP so this has been a bit of an adventure. Feel free to check it out and offer any constructive feedback to me.
Good moderators. Really good ones. And pretty much the right atmosphere. When it feels like the forum is just 3 people’s bandwagon, then thats no good. When actual good info is being laid out with good discussions, then that fanboyism stuff won’t be so annoying.
Main thing is that the atmosphere of the forums isn’t for fanboy talk (that has its own section) or story discussion, its for gameplay. Combos, tips, tricks, matchups, just about everything pure gameplay related with the excemption forums which should have their own little section.
I think it looks pretty slick, good start. One of the priorities should be a page that’s strictly about “how to play KoF”, with things like Dandy J’s tutorial at the forefront.
Regarding the forum, though, I think it would be best not to cover so many games while it’s just starting up, especially games that aren’t SNK. The other fighting games forum shouldn’t even be there, in my opinion. I think it might even be best to narrow down the titles covered by SNK, at least for the time being, since right now we’re just trying to focus on KoFXIII and a select few other KoFs. Maybe keep general Fatal Fury and general SamSho, but that’s just me.
Agreed about moderators, cut out the bullshit with an iron fist.
My only suggestion for now would be to try to actually group the FF, AOF, LB, SamSho and other SNK games into just one forum. As much as we love those games, they are not as active as the King of Fighters games and even NGBC. Maybe if SNKP in the future releases another game in either series that takes off, then it can get it’s own board.
Also, like some other forums I visit, make sure to have some really good moderators so that way the site does not spiral out of control.
And I agree, you should get rid of the other fighting games board. There are plenty of other sites devoted to those fighting games. No need to have that in an SNK only forum.
Honestly, the site will become what the community makes of it. We have 8 pages here of people wanting to build a bigger, better community and now I’ve provided that opportunity. The site is a blank slate. For my part, I plan to moderate it and keep things under control to a degree. If you want players to run it, get over there and sign up. I haven’t indexed the site yet with Google so it’s pretty empty at the moment. I wanted to get some feedback from this community before starting to try to generate members.
The way I see it, Orochinagi’s problem is that the forums are oddly laid out and the homepage is rarely updated. At Cyberfanatix, the forum conversation is not very interesting. When I built the site, I thought I would combine what works from those sites along with what I like about SRK and Melty Bread and create something SNK-centric from that information.
If you want to build the scene, get involved!
Thanks for the suggestions. I originally did not have the other fighting games category but it was a suggestion that made sense. After thinking about it and considering what I’ve read here, I’ll remove it and re-order the SNK games section.
What also helps is to have the recent games on the top. Kinda like what SRK has right now, the first things you see are either the welcome forums and SSF4 and Marvel forums. Having the most recent KOF on the top will make that section the most active on the forums.
One suggestion I do want to make is have a sub forum for each character. That’s a lot of sub chars but that way u can have gameplay/combo/matchup discussion to a specific character, which will make it easier to find specific info instead of a team forum or a one char thread for everything.
Also, def have the site do posts on tournaments, both US and World, with any kind of info/reactions/vids/etc as possible.
I’m going to just throw this out there okay, it looks great but as far as front page articles go I highly HIGHLY suggest you put as much emphasis on “GAMEPLAY” related articles as you can rather than fluff, I really can’t stress this enough
those are excellent frontpage sites, they generally cover tournaments (up and coming along with their results), guides, or just stuff about gameplay and the people that play them, the reason why CX2.0 and other SNK websites struggle to have a dedicated community is because they focus more on KOF in general about as much as they play the game (the former usually usurps the latter in time) that and their mods don’t do a good job, either way this a step in the right direction and I really want it to take off some I’ll try my best to help you out, some suggestions I have
Since you run things over their I suggest you appoint some “no nonsense” mods, dustloop is known to run a pretty tight ship so I don’t see why we can’t have the same
Make another sub-forum for online match-making, use it for GGPO, Supercade, ARCLive, XBLA, etc to help get more people to play/learn KOF/MOTW/SS etc
Change KOF 98UM to KOF 98/UM to encourage people to use the subforum for both games instead of just one, same with KOF 2002UM
KOF XII doesn’t need a sub-forum, it can just get a thread in the “KOF sub” simple as that
Open up a “suggestions” sub-forum
NeoGeo Battle Coliseum needs a sub-forum
Here’s a personal one of mine, encourage people to contribute something worthwhile (whether it’s on the front page or in the forum), I’m going to be honest with you I hate going on CX and only seeing 4-5 people contribute to the character threads while everyone else bumps threads about costumes colors, bosses, story, or something stupid like that, we do not want that playground shit
anyway, I’ll try to copy and paste the majority of the info I posted here over there
nilcam: Nice site! I agree with alot of what others have said by making the forums (and site) more gameplay based and having stuff still for the fanboys.
On the FRONT PAGE, is there a way to add in the future a “Todays/Upcoming Streams” for people who do (or plan to do) SNK themed live streams? Also, can members contribute the ‘upcoming events’ section with tournament announcements featuring SNK games? I think it will be a good idea for those looking for things to do RIGHT when they hit the front page. It works really well here.
Just let me know when you need me to help with the wikis on basically anything I can just let me know, if I don’t reply quickly I may be in Mexico (like middle of August) just FYI.
