Well Daigo is like the anti hero of sorts in that he appears all perfect and humble on the outside but on the inside he’s really thinking a lot more. Like when he was at Season’s Beatings you’d have to be around him the whole 3 days to even catch anything out of him that seemed off putting or arrogant. He may have smirked or chuckled a few times during a few fights against some players he knew he was gonna beat but other than that it was just him shaking hands after matches or otherwise just looking at the tv screen. Anyone else would just think he’s simply a dedicated warrior who respects all of his opponents and just plays for the game like the perfect warrior should. The fact that he doesn’t speak much any English doesn’t help at all. Even if Daigo wanted to say you were trash he surely doesn’t know how to say it in English and knows he’d make a fool of himself saying it in a language no one would understand.
Maybe it’s because he’s not a professional. I’m not condoning not living up to agreements but let’s be honest about something. “Professional gaming” is somewhat of an oxymoron. Very few people do this kind of stuff for a living. Once in a while you find people proficient enough to make a nice chunk of change on a regular basis but, for the most part, the vast majority of people in the “professional” scene are in it for the love. It’s a hobby. That’s why the whole deal with guys like Daigo and Wong having fanbases seems so backwards.
Nobody bats an eye when people root for Derek Jeter because the world he’s in is just different. It’s more conducive to that kind of revelry. Professional athletes know that they’re in the public eye and, if they don’t actively enjoy it, they at least passively accept it. But playing video games as a hobby and winning tournaments because that’s just what you do? That’s not really a world where you think “Hey, I’m a role model. I have interviews to give and have to tell kids to stay off drugs.” So while I don’t think it’s right for somebody to blow off a scheduled interview, I can respect the feeling of “I don’t want or need this shit. Who the fuck am I to be interviewed?”
Yeah WTF is the mentioning about Daigo blowing off interviews about? He isn’t getting paid for what he does. Gaming is just something he likes to do. He isn’t Lebron James or Dwayne Wade. He’s a person who just happens to do something competitively on the scale of those professional athletes. Trains daily but ultimately it’s still nothing more than a passionate hobby and he doesn’t need the spotlight in his face all the time for some shit he isn’t even getting paid for like that.
I mean we’re talking about the same guy who looked completely lost on a Japanese TV show. He’s just trying to live life and do what he likes to do. He obviously doesn’t want to be asked about it on every bend and turn like a media hounded athlete.
Exactly lol
No one’s dick riding, Daigo is just ‘the best’, hes the world champ, hes proven himself but hes also humble so clearly hes going to get some fans. No one idolizes the person that came 8th or the person thats just about as good but acts like a jackass (justin).
Just one interview where he speaks his mind and you have people screaming arrogant…give me a break, if anything hes earned his right to speak his mind and from that interview hes being anything but arrogant. Its only you jealous children taking it that way.
Oh fk off…if Daigo is arrogant then what is Justin? And Justin isnt world champ mind you…
Hes been playing SF for half his life to get where he is you do have to be good at what you do.
How exactly is he putting american down?
He has his reasons and it makes sense based on those assumptions. Theres a difference between confidence and arrogance.
And hello arent these good things about the American scene? What if Daigo was from America and he said those things about America, you’d be fuming wouldnt you?
Back in the days jap sticks weren’t common. When they became more common more people started liking them. That’s not a hard concept to grasp.
I’m not disputing that. The point I’m trying to get across is that a lot of US players will go for jap sticks when given the choice. That same group has been making statements about the sticks being shit for years and nobody cried. But now when a non-US top level player says it so many people turn into drama queens and start making it into a patriotic issue (which it’s not). The fucks up with that?
If a US player would say this shit then you wouldn’t even mention arrogance, instead it would be like Yeah this how USA roll up in dis bitch, USA all da way bay-be! Dis how we do da red white blue etc etc.
first off, even if he did not say that, that dude is arrogant. that’s not really a bad thing imo
second…
I believe this statement says that he wasn’t using the crappy joysticks as a complete logical assumption
third, even if “they had crappy joysticks; I can’t lose” was his logical assumption, it’s a horrible one. If I have a crappy gun and you have the finest made pistol in the world, you will still die if I shoot you in the face. If I have a wooden javelin and you have one that is impossible to break, you will still feel pain and die if I stab you.
Confident:
- having strong belief or full assurance; sure: confident of fulfillment.
sure of oneself; having no uncertainty about one’s own abilities, correctness, successfulness. self-confident; bold: a confident speaker.
Arrogance: - making claims or pretensions to superior importance or rights; overbearingly assuming; insolently proud: an arrogant public official. Having or displaying a sense of overbearing self-worth or self-importance.
If you haven’t heard it already, go to Skisonic’s alphaISM radio podcast thread here on srk. Listen to the one with Javits in it discussing Seasons Beatings/Daigo. From me hearing it i didn’t pick up any real arrogance from Daigo, he is extremely self assured in his analytical abilities to “read” his opponents.
LOL…it figures.
no, but what’s really hard to grasp is the complaints about the stick from these “long-time, hardcore players” who profess,“i played SF in the arcades since i was six and i pwned !”. in reality, it sounds the old Tiger Knee motion on a Happ would make their heads spin. i mean, either you got it or you didn’t get it and if you didn’t get it. you probably weren’t playing for very long or, more likely, didn’t play at all. it’s not like there was a choice at the time.
i have no idea. i’m from a totally different era. frankly, i can’t relate to these guys at all.
Do you buy American cars?
Jesus get over it. That could just as easily mean hes confident with himself. Judging from his thought process and assumptions on the US scene im going with him being confident. Have you heard of any other time hes trash talked to someone? or behaved like an idiot like Justin did at at a tourney? Pro athletes Federer, Tiger Woods, Shumacher are all confident and always believe that they can win and thats one of the reasons why they’re champs. Its the same concept with Daigo and SF.
jesus get over it?
you’re an idiot who wants to believe what he wants to believe. I even said earlier that even if he didn’t mean to say that, he’s still arrogant. Confidence without reason is arrogance… period. No, “I’m motha fuckin Daigo” isn’t a reason. I don’t know how you don’t get that.
I’m done with you
Capcom-Unity posted their follow-up to Eurogamer’s interview on S-Kill’s blog.
Daigo Umehara Interview Bonus Material!
Talks more about his matches with Justin, overseas tournaments, and more background info.
heh. these interviews give away so much info
Lol God bless Daigo. I love his interviews.
“At the exhibition match, he was completely defeated at the score of 10 to 2. Logically, he would almost have no chance of winning if he did exactly the same.”
We need more GDLK interviews from Jap players…
I still don’t know if Daigo uses paper or plastic.
you’re making a big deal out of nothing. he was a baby, only 16 for christ sake when he thought that. he is human like everyone else. he also gave valid reasons like no precision for him thinking this. he was a boy then, he is a man now. with age comes humbleness and humilty, or does anyone really think he still thinks like a 16 year old? he was simply giving a candid and frank interview that read more like a biography, and anyone that has read 1 knows there is nothing arrogant about the honesty shown by daigo
you say that as if I’m basing my entire evaluation off of one statement. and the tone of the post is as if I’m trying to put the guy down
first off, I don’t think it’s bad if a person is a pussy, an arrogant bastard, an asshole, stupid, whatever. be whatever the hell you wanna be, just don’t let it stop you from winning. he’s winning so he’s alright in my book
second, I didn’t even realize that age thing, so mb. either way, 16 isn’t 3. Major changes can happen between 16 and 27 (wiki says he was born 1982), but certain characteristics stay the same. arrogance is one of them. less he got his ass whooped a lot after that, I doubt it changed
third, there’s other signs of it. other things he’s said in the interview. hell, the guy’s PLAYSTYLE is arrogant
fourth, and final to all of this “Daigo isn’t arrogant!” shit, even if he ultimately isn’t… what the fuck does it matter. have you shook the guy’s hand? talked with him? have you even see this mother fucker? No?
edit: not saying I have, but if you haven’t either… then all we have is speculation. I’m trying to stay unbiased though
Thinking you’re the best in the world is only arrogance if it isn’t true.
