EH not really. A program that turns your something like your Gmail account space into a virtual HDD. I had one once but i don’t remember what is was called.
Awesome thread. Ty
Just to share, the following is my anti-virus setup, all free:
AVG 8 [I know, already mentioned].
Comodo BOClean [not the firewall, realtime protection, but it uses a diffrent method for detecting viruses than most other anti-virus, very useful].
Online Armor Firewall [easy, non-intrusive]
Then, for immunizers [don’t run in background]:
Spybot
Spyware Blaster
For scanners/other stuff:
Super Anti-Spyware
Malwarebytes Anti-malware
HiJackThis [so useful]
ComboFix [when it comes to viruses that are hard to get rid of, MOST USEFUL TOOL]
Then, for optimizing windows:
Iobit Advanced System Care v3 [speed’s up my system and comes with so many useful tools]
Iobit SmartDefrag [better and faster than regular defragger]
Eusing Free Registry Cleaner [does a very good job]
CCleaner
Hope that helped somebody. I didn’t bother with links cause you can google the name and it will be the first entry.
BTW, is there some kind of alternate download manager/program one can install so that you don’t have to use the IE downloading program.
IE sucks because it makes a copy of your download requiring double the hard disk space just for one file. I’m looking for a way to circumvent that.
I already know about Firefox, opera etc. but those are incompatible for me atm, so I need a subsystem of sort.
Free Download Manager?
K-Meleon is a really really good web browser.
Yes, it is.
Ridiculously fast.
I’m used to bells and whistles from Firefox though.
From my understanding, Firefox plugins can work with K-Meleon. It has some compatibility features that alow things from FF, IE and Opera to be used with K-Meleon.
My only complaint is the need for an external email client.
I’d also like to give a huge thumbs up to Digsby. I finally have something better than Pidgin.
Not only can you IM on Yahoo, MSN, AIM and ICQ, but it checks Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, POP and other email for you. AND if that wasn’t enough, you even have notifications for stuff on Myspace, Twitter and others. Basically, it’s a super swiss army knife of messaging and social networking.
good thread
I have a video I want to edit for avatar purposes. I can’t remember the program I used the last time I edited a video, so I need SRK’s help.
Basically, what I want to do is take some frames out of a video, and then save the rest as a GIF. I’d use Animation Shop but there are no trial versions available. What else could I use?
VirtualDub will do the initial parts of that proces–you can rip frames to image files, which you can assemble into a gif using some other software.

Beautiful posts.
Are all the programs you posted there free? I only skimmed through them.
When i made that post 2 years ago, they were all free OR there was a freeware version somewhere on the site.
a LOT of freeware can be got at
and this program is AMAZING.
my basic list of MUST-HAVE freewares for EVERYBODY is this.
http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/ - update checker, makes sure all of your free programs are up-to-date < basically any program available on filehippo will be checked.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ - ccleaner is just fucking amazing, and if you haven’t gotten it yet, GET IT NOW.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_7-zip/ - best compression tool ever.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_recuva/ - recovers deleted files
http://www.filehippo.com/download_tweakui/ - customizes your windows
http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/ -
http://www.filehippo.com/download_vlc/ - low profile media player… what more can you want?
^ VLC is okay, but its internal codecs are outdated. This has been one of its biggest problems.
Last month I reformated and reinstalled XP, which ended up being the best decision ever. I was using a hacked up XP meant to be faster, but it was missing several key things in the process. Now I have everything, with SP3 built in no less.
My previous opinions of the best video player has changed. With my old XP, there was some stuttering/slow down when playing videos from my external HD. I figured it was the drive itself and its USB connection. Since reinstalling, every video player I’ve tried since hasn’t had that issue, so I have a better realization of which is truly the best.
SMplayer is still very very high on my list, but until the .wmv support improves, it can’t be the best. Certain .wmv videos are not very seekable, others you can’t seek backwards… etc. I’ve gone back to The KMplayer. It has absolutely everything and no problems.
I have to put songs on the wife’s iPod, someone please give me an alternative to putting iTunes on my PC again.
Any good CD burning software that isn’t Nero? I can’t get my version to work for some reason.
I suggest getting DVD Decriptor. Easy to find and good burns when I used it.
cd burner xp and imgburn come to mind.
