Essential Freeware Thread

Essential Freeware Thread 2009

Just post whatever freeware you like to use. What it does and where to get it. It benefits us all so why not. You don’t have to pay to “unlock” any of these programs and they do their job quietly and effectively.
CDisplay is an essential tool for reading manga and comics on your PC.

http://www.geocities.com/davidayton/CDisplay

The StartupRun utility displays the list of all applications that are loaded automatically when Windows boots. For each application, additional information is displayed (Product Name, File Version, Description, and Company Name), in order to allow you to easily identify the applications that are loaded at Windows startup. if StartupRun identifies a spyware or adware program that runs at startup, it automatically paints it in pink color. In addition, you are allowed to Edit, disable, enable and delete the selected startup entries. You can also save the list of startup items into a text or html files, and even add a new startup entry to the Registry.

  • The President of SRK.

Namaste.

The GIMP for image editing. Decent enough if you want Photoshop and can’t afford it and/or are too lazy to pirate it:
http://www.gimp.org

Foxit Reader. Excellent, full-featured PDF reader that’s less of a resource hog than Adobe’s PDF reader.

GAIM - Chat client like AIM, but open source and able to communicate with multiple types of cliens (ICQ, Yahoo chat, AIM, MSN messenger, etc…)

Open Office- A Microsoft Office alternative. Supports all the features of MS office, but it’s free and open.

Vlc media player

Tired of trying to locate codecs and using multiple media players to watch Por… er I mean torrented anime? Well this is the catch all player that plays anything regardless of how incomplete or corrupted that file may be. It also has options to activate subs or different audio streams. This way if your watching some dubbed hent… I mean anime, you can change the voices to english!!

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

I also recommend Bitcomet and the best bittorent client eva!!!

ONEZ

BitComet is banned at various torrent sites for reasons that are of a higher computer nerd level than I am able to understand.

uTorrent rules though. http://www.utorrent.com/

Also, if there’re any Scrabble players, go check out Wordbiz… http://www.isc.ro/en/

Best freeware SHMUP ever: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/rr_e.html

It’s all about the DVDShrink

http://www.dvdshrink.org/

Does it work with Rar files?

Also does anyone have any Commander Keen or Microman freeware? I miss those games.

I guess I’ll just copy/paste my original ish.

Just as I was going to unleash my TECH SUPPORT NO JUTSU!****, I was beaten to it. Not much I can add, apart from Ewido for anti-spyware. Good stuff, Warpticon

EDIT: Aha! I have observed your technique, and now will defeat you! Behold the mighty freeware you have forgotten:

CCleaner - Excellent registry cleaner
PDF creator - One click printing and creation of .PDF files froma variety of file types
Process Explorer NT - Kill any process running, lists the company name next to each process
Unlocker - Delete files which windows says are being used by another process etc.
TuneUp Utilities 2006 - Like norton’s utilities, but free
Apache HTTP server - One of the BEST dedicated server applications out there

PS: Can’t be arsed to put the links right now, I’ll do it later. In the meantime, use google you lazy cunts.

You wouldn’t happen to know what few sites those are would you? I haven’t had any trouble with the various sites that I got to. Some of them I havne’t been to in a long while, but if any of them are on my list, I’d like to know about them.

Wow, 5 fucking stars @ this thread. I can’t contribute that much, but why not-

For those of you into guitar, powertabs/powertab editor is the best tool I’ve seen in quite awhile to accumulate/learn music:
http://www.powertabs.net/ (For song downloads in pt format)
http://www.power-tab.net/ (To DL the editor and library that run the songs)

Clean Up! - A great free program that will clear out your recent documents, browsing history, spyware, etc. You can set how much and what it clears out and it does it in a few seconds, really great program.

I’m gonna rep Skype

I know that most of the major chat programs have PC to PC calling, but Skype IMO has the best connection. I talk to people in Africa and it sounds basically crystal.

Doesn’t take up any resources when I play some DoW with my friends…no lag.

Most of those are hardly “essential.”

Daemon Tools

  • Create a virtual drive and mount any iso image so you don’t actually have to burn any CD/DVDs.

iTunes

  • Possibly the best mp3 player for the average person. The only thing I can recommend over iTunes is foobar, but it might be too confusing for some people.

Other essentials that have either been named or that I’m too lazy to link:

  • Firefox
  • WinRAR
  • Media Player Classic [get this!]
  • Azureus [second only to uTorrent. don’t bother with bitComet or any of the other torrent clients]

Programs I wouldn’t recommend:

  • Open Office [maybe this has changed in the past couple years, but when I tried it out I didn’t like it at all]
  • GIMP [seriously, just download Photoshop]

Yeah, that list hasn’t been updated in over a year, I have to add some stuff to it.

I don’t have much to add but I really like the mirc script noname, it’s easy to use and has some good features
http://www.nnscript.de/index.php?section=download

And flashget is a great download manager
http://www.flashget.com/en/download.htm

how are they any less essential than anything else on the list for the purposes noted?

Not freeware.

Both programs have likely changed enormously since you last used them. If it’s been a couple years since you used OO, then you used the 1.x version, which is far inferior to the 2.x series.

  1. It just seems a bit silly to list multiple bittorrent clients, multiple web browsers, etc. and claim that they’re all “essential.”

  2. iirc you can get a working version on oldversion.com for free, just like you can get a barebones version of winamp for free.

  3. Gotcha.

I suppose I can see that, but what’s essential to one person may not be to another. I prefer to leave the choice in the hands of others.

:wow: I wanted to post some stuff, but Warpticon kinda destroyed the thread.

Excellent topic!
