Essential Freeware Thread

Anybody know of a good video joiner program?

As long as you’re careful, I’d recommend RegSeeker for Registry cleaning.

In case you don’t know what registry errors do, the most common effect is that your Explorer loads folders slower than they should (before I ran this, some folders took almost 30 seconds to load. Registry errors are usually made when you uninstall programs. I recommend using this at least once.

Huh, I remember hearing about Songbird, but i ignored it since I don’t really use those kinds of players. I see it’s cross-platform, too. May need to a/b it with Azureus on windows and linux both.

VirtualDub is a good choice. Since it’s well-known, you can usually search for guides on how to use its various functions.

I don’t remember why, but I went back to AVG Antivirus awhile back. I think my issue was it constantly asked to restart after updates, but I figured out that only happens when I’ve had uTorrent running while it was downloading the update. So yeah, AVG is still the truth.

I got a 500 gb external harddrive, and the only problem I have with it is… watching videos off of it usually ends up in a slightly jerky video/framerate. So of course, I went huntin for another video player.

KMplayer is STILL tops, but until I get me a better comp, it’s not going to do much for me with watching movies off the external drive. MPC is still bad. VLC and SMplayer have the smoothest picture, but VLC’s internal codecs suck, so DivX movies result in the typical green spots/artifacts video sometimes. I don’t remember what my issues with SM were before, but it seems almost flawless now.

This is a bump to recommend a new torrent program I’m using, called Deluge. It seems bloody fast compared to say, utorrent and halite, and I’m really liking it.

I only have one niggle though, and that is that for some reason, the User Interface can be really slow, particularly if you’re right clicking. It’s really annoying.

But well, speed is speed so I guess I can’t complain much.

Hm. Link doesn’t work.

v: Thank you.

What, Deluge? Maybe I got it wrong?

Here’s the main page: http://deluge-torrent.org/

Here’s the download page: http://deluge-torrent.org/downloads.php

Here’s a softpedia mirror if you absolutely can’t get the main site to work: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/File-Sharing/Deluge.shtml

Deluge is an awesome name for a torrent program. Even more awesome, it’s cross platform. I’ve never been satisfied with the torrent options in linux…not a fan of Transmission, KTorrent, or Vuze. This looks right up my alley. Why is it so damn big, though?

Oh, and your link didn’t work because it went to htp://deluge/. I appreciate all the extra effort, though.

  1. Does anyone know any freeware that edits DVR-MS files?

  2. Has anyone tried Debut? Its a free video recorder

I can get the video to work just fine, but I cant get any audio at all. If anyone has experienced this, how did you fix this? I’m running my XB360 through my VCR, but even though I can get video going, I cant get audio at all. I know for a fact its not my VCR.

I sat through and tested EVERY video player on this wiki that was Windows compatible.

I can safely tell you guys with the utmost confidence, that SMplayer is the best player out right now. The KMplayer (not to be confused with KMplayer, minus “The”), BS.Player, GOMplayer and Zoom Player follow it, in that order.

What makes SMplayer standout? It uses less memory than most players WHILE a video is open (others double in memory), you can create thumbnail images (only BS.Player and MPC allow this), and it’s extremely customizable. It also has a cache feature, where it caches parts of a video before playing it. BS and KM also have this, but SM actually allows you to control specifically how much to cache. This can increase performance even more.

All this aside, it does have some bugs. For example, subtitle scaling/font size needs slight work, and you can seek back and forth with your mouse wheel, but some .wmv files don’t seen backward. Also, it won’t open files because of their file names sometimes (for example, if 720x484 is in the titles… maybe a prob with reading numbers). Despite this, its under active development and its only a matter of time before these and others get cleared up.

If it weren’t for subs, I’d be using SMPlayer. That, and (this could just be my imagination) for some reason, when I go to a different part of a vid using it, it tends to lag for like a split second before actually going to that part in the vid (as opposed to KM or GOM). I’m touchy about things like that.

Now, for a new freeware game, Spelunky! It’s basicaly a platformer with level design derived from roguelikes: randomly generated, and hard as hell. I recommend everyone check it out, it’s lots of fun, even if it is a bit brutal. T raps abound, lots of death, very cute aesthetically.

Unless gimpshop’s made major improvements lately, it’s crap in my book. I couldn’t use it for 3 minutes without it crashing on me.

Just grab Gimp, I know there’s a port for it to Windows, just search for it.

Does anyone know of a good League management software? I have a little hockey league going on and I need something that tracks win-loss-overtime as well as points and standings. I don’t need anything fancy like scheduling.

Thanks!

Haven’t really been tracking this thread, but I usually use MediaMonkey to keep my library up to date as far as tagging goes. It connects to the internet and downloads the album art if available, and retags all the fields. It’s usually pretty accurate for mainstream stuff, and seems to work better than CDDB (only other thing I’ve used)

As far as I know, Gimpshop isn’t supported on Vista, so if you’re using that OS, that could be why.

Had no problems on XP tho.

Thanks! I’ll check it out. Yeah I used CDDB and I got a lot of wrong tags :frowning: that I had to manually change more Mp3s.

Anyone know a progs that will let you turn stuff like your Gmail box into a Storage space for files images and movies?

^ Something like this? http://www.freewaregenius.com/2008/09/18/gbridge-access-remote-pcs-easily/

That’s a review of aprogram. The actual download link is in small print underneath “Compatibility” (it’s a niggle that I dislike with the site’s interface but that’s about it).
