Dual-Modding a PS2 and Xbox 360 Stick (Updated)

Hi guys … a friend of mine wants me to dual modd his Mayflash stick with a 360 pcb but i haven’t found a thread here to explain how to do it, so i don’t have a clue on how or if it can be done .

So, is this project possible or should i purchace a cthulu board?
If it’s possible can you plz tell me how to do it or post a diagramm of the wiring!

thnx in advance

I’ve done the dual mod with those PCBs. I don’t have my arcade parts to actually make sure it works… but both PCBs still power up (having done both PCBs into terminal strips that will in turn use QCDs to attach to the arcade parts) and show no trouble from that side of things.

Cthulu is supposed to be the best thing around for what it does, but I liked the Mayflash casing… decided to keep the PCB, too.

I don’t anticipate any trouble with it all working properly once I get my parts… but I make no promises on that.

To the OP:
How did you fit everything on a 12 position terminal strip? You would only be able to fit 8 buttons and stick if you don’t run the ground wire through the strip, yet I see you have 10 buttons installed.

^ 12 isn’t enough like what you said. You can cut them and super glue them together if you want a few more holes.

My 12 have U, D, L, R, Start, Select, and 6 buttons. The ground isn’t in it nor is the power. My other two buttons are running directly from the PSX PCB. No magic is involved, I promise.

edit: wrong thread

Quick addition, guys…

Another source of PSX PCB boards is the old Ascii Pearl PSX pads that NCSX has on clearance this week.

I think that around $21 they’re still a bit pricey nowadays but if you don’t have luck finding old PS1 pads in your area this might be an alternative.

These are brand-new, unused pads in the original packaging.

Although NCSX will ship through USPS for $2.50, I still recommend using UPS if you live in an area notorious for mail theft or loss like DC or Chicago…

^ I’m not trying to discount what you said, but you shouldn’t have to pay more than $10 for a Sony Dual Shock controller on eBay. I’m not certain if the pad you linked to is common ground and will work for this tutorial.

On a side note, yesterday I converted the stick in the OP to a DB15 cable for my project boxes. That way I’ll just toss together another project box when a new system comes out. It’s a little more future-proof.

How about mapping triggers to a digital connection ? Especially on the madcatz #4716-2008 where it is said that triggers are active high (and not active low like other PCBs) ?

I thought about using optocouplers for this but would like to know the feasibility of this particular detail before going to the drawing board.

Are you saying you’ve done the PCB mod with the Mayflash PCB + Xbox360? I was wondering if you know where the power source is on the Mayflash, so I could hook it up to the v on my 360pad.

Gah…noo!! Anyway I went and picked up the Madcatz Retro Arcade PCB. I’ll maybe try to see what I can do with it on Sunday. Its going to be a pain trying to figure out whats what on my HRAP2 PCB!

Sup Kyle, this is a really awesome tutorial you’ve got going here. I’ve taken a gander at it a few times for reference, but I never got to give any feedback. Just one question though. Is it possible to make this dual-PCB array work without the use of a terminal block? For instance, let’s take the Xbox 360’s A button and the PSX’s X button. Could I say, take a wire from both button’s signals, tie them together, solder another wire to the tied ends, then QD that to a button and have it work in a similar manner?

Terminal strip is only for convenience and organization. Electrically it will make no difference, just connect the wires

Yeah, it’s the same logic to twist them together. The reason I like it (in theory) is that you can disconnect it and replace it with another PCB. That’s why I ultimately ended up going the project box route in favor of this. I now have a DB15 connector coming out of my stick that can hook up to whatever little console controller I wire. That way it’s less of a chore when the Xbox 720/PS4/whatever comes out.

Thanks for the responses fellas. This’ll make my life SO MUCH easier when I’m modifying my friend’s sticks with another PCB.

Hey Guys I am doing the dual mod with this http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4827/madcatz2008sp4.jpg and the PS1 DS. I am sure this has been asked somewheres, I just can’t seem to locate it.

If I have no interest in using the LT and RT (only looking to do 6 button layout X, Y, B, A, LB, RB) can I take the plastic parts of the triggers and stuff off safely without messing up the PCB? I noticed people talking about Diodes and whatnot, but I am assuming that is for the people who want to use LT RT. ( I am trying to conserve space in the box for all the parts and both PCB’s )

Anyways, thanks a bunch, if this has been posted somewhere’s on SRK, just point me in the right direction!

Thanks

Nevermind, my Search-Fu failed me earlier, I apologize for subjecting you all to that noobish question!

So I’m doing a dual mod with a mad catz 2007 pad and the nubytech sf pad for ps2. I read that this ps2 pad has a common ground, but it’s acting strange when I test it. All of the buttons are constantly going off at all times. This is my first pad hack as well so I’m not sure if it has something to do with the diodes attached to the triggers on the 360 pad. They seem to stop the triggers from receiving a signal.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Wow awesome tutorial kyle. You are the king of simplicity. And your great for explaining the tech without all the jargon.

Quick question, I have a MAS stick and I plan to do the project box route. What kind of connector you recommend? I want to use a connector that will have enough pins to satisfy the buttons of most controllers.

If this isn’t in the essentials yet, it should be. I’ll be referring to this thread a lot when I’m modding my stick.

Awesome tutorial, great pictures and very informative.

I was just curious if you or anyone else was considering making another tutorial with a TE/Cthulu/Imp by chance? It seems like a lot of people are trying to mod their TEs to work with both 360 and PS3 or PS2/

so I swapped out the nubytech pad with a sony ps1 pad and it no longer has all the buttons constantly going off. I assume this means the nubytech pad activates high instead of low? I would just use this sony pad but the right and down inputs are busted. Hopefully I can grab one from a friend soon.

Right now my major issue is just getting the 360 pad buttons to work :/.
