I think it’s going to be interesting when AE is released. I wonder how many People will use Dan when its going to cost them credits per every match.
They need to make Dan viable for AE, surely they would do that?

Nerfing his sMK is an odd way of doing that. Let us all hope that that change wasn’t real or doesn’t stay, regardless of any other likely buff he may get losing his one decent poke isn’t worth it.
This forum is so terrible. I know a few of you guys take Dan seriously and want to actually explore him, but man, wading through everyone else’s crap is just too tedious. I wish there was a separate sub-sub-forum for actual Street Fighter players in here.
Dan is pretty good. Imo he goes evenish with or beats a bunch of characters, like Abel, Claw, Cody, Dhalsim, Fei, Fuerte, Gen, Gouken, Guy, Hakan, Makoto, and Rufus. Heck, I recently beat a top level Blanka in a long set with him. Yes, I’ve played good players using each of those characters, in some cases the best ones in SoCal and even the country. I know the only other reasonable tournament player I’ve seen in the US use Dan, Sanford, did well with him too. And we do ok despite the fact that neither of us tries to main him.
Dan has tons of tricks that as far as I can tell nobody has ever looked into ever. In another thread I posted something I saw recently, a little crossup mk dan kick trick that I hadn’t heard about before. I asked some pretty basic questions it, and… nobody knew about it. A couple guys (the actual SF players) knew about similar things, but not that one in particular. For Dan to do as well as he does with his basic rushdown-pressure game and without all the crazy little tricks I know he has but have never learned is a good sign that he can be a pretty good character.
But the fact that he has tricks nobody knows also means that dedicated Dan players have not been doing their job. How long can you main Dan and not figure out his tricks? Apparently at least a year and a half.
If you main Dan in SF4 you’re probably not very competent from the get go.
Buu~ why so mean? I don’t really agree, in my opinion Dan only beats Hakan and just by a little, the rest that are even-ish are still slightly in the opposition’s favour and others I think are clearly not in Dan’s favour.
What are these so called tricks you mentioned? The one you pointed out before I wouldn’t even consider a trick, just a weird thing with characters passing over each other and not at all consistent. If you think he has a bag of untapped tricks then why don’t you throw us a bone and point them out.
The difference between you and Sanford and the rest of us is that you two are tournament players. Maybe that’s why we’re taking so long to figure stuff out is that we don’t have any tournament players trying to work out all his tricks, just us regular Joes who only play this game as a hobby.
The opposite is most likely true, I’ll let you figure out why.
the problem with dan is that lots of those tricks dont do anywhere near as much damage as the basics, sadly. one can Crossup a jumping middle kick into the first hit of close middle kick, into legendary taunt, into shissho buraiken. this winds up being just flashier than jumping fierce kick into shissho buraiken, and does almost the same damage and stun. there are lots of little tricks ive discovered, but without wasting half or more of his super meter, i can just jFK->sFP->HKDankyaku, and Focus bait into it all over again, or get into a throw war.
or just run away and taunt again and again until they jump into a koryuken. What’s flashy isnt always what’s best, and if you can go for a combo you might screw up under pressure vs a combo guaranteed to hit without leaving you vulnerable, the smart choice is the guarantee.
spoken as a Dan tourney player who has won (local tournaments only, back in ND for SFIV).
lets face it, point for point, what dan can do, he Does suck… on paper. but what is more satisfying than focus bait, run away, GADOUUUUKEENNNNN!!! as the flowcharter gets an armpit full of green fire? Any character can suck with an inexperienced player at the controls.
and any character can win with the basics. Dictator, for instance- try not using ANY special moves. at all. not even his standing fierce kick of cheese. Try not jabbing with boxer. try not jumping with claw. Ive tried this. its hard, but can be done. i’ve even… gasp not thrown people while playing zangief. the temptation is strong. the tricks are nice. ANd what works is what works. Different strokes for different folks, different buttons for… uh… game gluttons? hmm…
But dont you dare tell me not to YAHOOOOO! when i could try something fancy! The name is Dan Hibiki! Dan Hibiki! DAN HIBIKI!!!

No one asks anymore. We tried compiling on the jump to super, but there’s not nearly enough people manning the books. We got the meat and potatoes up, but the trivia was buried. :\
I think the ten people who really knew his guts have already done pages and pages of documentation. I can remember a lot of it off hand. Wakeup games, who you can meaty-Danku point-blank to in the corner to make you immune to reversals, option-selects (Pretty much covered by you), basic corner resets, Ultra II distorting character position on startup (Allowing you to catch things like Ibuki or Akuma’s wakeup shenanigans with your torso and pushing them into the fireball), the lulzy benefits of Meaty EX Danku.
Also, Crossover MK.Danku was met with this conversation:
And that was the extent of our strategic breakdown.
The rest is all expanding on top of stuff we already know, or tips and tricks that have less to do with Dan and more with knowing the characters you’re fighting.
Dan’s good matchups aren’t a problem. Anything 6-4 against is straight up gamblin’ odds, in my opinion. It’s the terribad matchups that make him hurt. I’ve seen people switch mains for way less than that. All that’s left here are a bunch of people who love trolling too much.
Ryu is a real world example of 1,000,000 monkeys banging on typewriters, eventually they will discover all there is to know about the character.
Dan could only afford 10 monkeys. SADFACE.
Oh boy, video games
Good against Sim ? Sure when mid-screen Dan can air Short Hop Kick and stuff Sim’s anti-air ( Maybe except EX Yoga Blast ) , but slide -> throw setup will stop that process . On top of that Dan is going to have a hard time getting close to Sim . B.Forward can stop his Hop Kicks , and trying to get chip damage from gadouken is pretty much out of the question since it lacks range sadly .
On a interesting side I did remembered with one of my matches against Sim in which I threw a gadouken out from far distance ( Range 4 probably ) and it stuffed Sim’s St.Fierce .
Imo any opponent that is hard to get up front and close like Sim or Guile ( Maybe even Seth ) is a terrible match-up for Dan . But I do agree Dan has the potential to win , its just people look at him the wrong way .
I don’t know what game you’re playing if you think this lol. Anti-airing is pretty basic, footsies comes into a factor in almost every mid level game…
Dan players don’t do much footsies because their normals are either short-ranged or have too much recuperation. For the majority of Dan players, this is too much of a disadvantage.
As a result, games with Dan have little to no footsies. The rationale is: If the opponent is playing footsies, better jump back and air taunt. With luck they will get tired of taking little steps backwards and forwards, and there will be an opportunity of taking them down. And that’s where Dan’s advantage resides.
I’d like to know the Dan players you have fought. If they did footsies with Dan, they were nearly legendary.
I use footsies with Dan frequently. It is only legendary if the opponent is good.
i know i hate fighting a dan online, its a lose lose for me, if i win congrats you were supposed to win, if i lose i feel like a failure. also ive never come across a really bad dan player, they all really do have some solid fundamentals.
footsies with dan is pretty easy.
St mk a whole lot.
st mp is good too.
cr mk -> ALWAYS buffer a gadou/dankuukyaku
st hk is decent.
constantly buffer koryu to catch jump ins
of course, i like rush down more and when they have fireballs footsies are kinda negated. also, i suck at anti-airing.
Don’t forget hp.Gado, it is great to throw into the footsies mix. As for fireballs negating footsies, that isn’t necessarily true.
They can choose to play the zoning game but 35 seconds of air taunting or air lk.Dankus over their fireballs and the most persistent zoner will move in for the kill.
I’m playing online, as are 95% of the people in this forum. I think we have one tournament Dan player, D-Bus. I’ll occasionally find a good player who can anti-air on reaction (not just when he’s Ryu with U1 charged and is looking for the LP Shoryuken). I’ll occasionally find a player where the game boils down into footsies. And I do enjoy those matches, because it gives me a chance to practice aspects of my game that I don’t normally get to use.
The thing is, when I’m fighting against players who do blind jump-ins or players whose idea of footsies is “I’ll do LP SRK, then when I land I’ll LP SRK again!”, there’s no need to randomly poke. My game can be about big punishes and frame traps and things like that.
95% is a bit steep lol. I’d contest that at least 35% of the people who visit the Street Fighter 4 section regularly attend tournaments or play in arcades.
But for the most part, I always footsies and it sure does help.
Sorry, when I say “in this forum” I mean the Dan subforum here. Not SRK as a whole. I’m an online warrior myself, though there’s apparently an effort being gathered to allow me to attend a local tournament next month that I normally would be unable to go to due to work. Some of my friends think it would be funny if I came in and destroyed everyone with Dan at a tournament, and while I might not be as confident in my abilities as they are, it’d mean I’d get a day off work, which isn’t a bad thing. And my stupidly high amount of Dan BP has to count for something, right?
Ahh true! it is actually very good used sparingly. Youll be surprised how many Vs ive gotten when opponent is at low health, i throw out a gadou from good range, then they jump right into it (I hate when the range is juuust too far though and it dissapears ) Its just annoying how far Dan’s hand goes out/ how slow it is compared to other fireballs.
Also…id go as far to say as never use gadou fadc walk with it. just not worth it. I played a Dan player who did this a lot and it never worked out for him.
I may be heading to the tournament scene myself when I can. I know BP/online doesnt count for much but I think Ive grown a lot from it and can do at least moderatly well. I also like how Xiahou and I are the highest BP non japanese Dan players (with Xiahou on top of everyone :o) Remember! Little Girls Tie Bows, Real Men Saikyo
