Seeing as how only 1 in 10 (if even that many) stations at Final Round had both Jill and Shuma as it is, not really. (lol)
These characters get shitted all the time so it being wasn’t a priority to put them on every station. Now a game with good DLC characters like BB and KoF it likely would have been a different story
It won’t for one simple reason- you can’t kill off old games that are tourney viable without new games to replace them. If the newer games fail to replace, people will keep playing the older games.
As for Skullgirls, it’s coming in with a lower initial price, and the DLC is being made as post-launch content. That’s closer to the expansion model of PC gaming, which I’m perfectly fine with- it’s not held back content at all.
As for KOF, they were having issues with the DLC as well. Only a portion of the stations had the chars unlocked, let alone DLC. They were having to slow down the tourney at times for folks who wanted to use DLC/unlock chars. It’s a reason why I don’t main any of them.
I’m fine with the Skullgirls model of DLC because it is actually content that you download.
How does that make the end result better? It’s arguably worse for compatibility since those who don’t buy the characters would have to download an extra compatibility pack just to play against them online or something, and it’s going to cost money to use them in either case. Why not save the HDD space, bandwidth, and hassle when possible?
The only reasons why Skullgirls DLC is okay is because the developer has comparatively fewer resources and the base game is cheap.
I won’t disagree that “truly” downloadable isn’t better than on-disk content - it’s not meant to be. But while compatibility packs may be inconvenient for developers and take up space on players HDD, it beats the sickening feeling of having on-disk content locked out until you pay extra for it after having already paid full price for the game. Especially for those of us who are a little older and remember when “hidden” content was already available; unlocked by completing portions of the game and DLC didn’t even exist. When it comes to SFxT, even if Capcom’s intentions were good and they were including the data already on disk for benefit of the players, it’s pretty much completely backfired because now most people who bought a copy feel like this is the ultimate display of corporate greed, and it’s soured a lot of opinions toward the company, mine included.
To put it simply; I would rather feel inconvenienced than screwed.
Would you have felt better had Capcom compeltely cut the extra characters’ data out of the SFxTK disc and held them off until they were ready to be sold?
Same end result. Your feelings are silly.
Technically, I don’t feel silly since I didn’t buy the game and don’t intend to.
Having said that, I would still rather feel silly than cheated. If the content was held off until they were ready to be sold and the content was purely downloadable, I personally wouldn’t complain or feel like I purchased an incomplete game, because I’d paid for what was on the disk and got just that. This is different though, because the content is there, purchased by everyone who has a copy in their hot little hands, but it is being locked away until Capcom allows you to pay extra for it - and correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this is a gaming industry first.
My point is that I don’t mind paying extra for things that are extra, but I do mind paying extra for things that are already there. It’d be like buying a pair of jeans, but you can only access the pockets only after you send Levi Strauss a extra $5 per pocket. Sure, you’ve got a functioning pair of pants and technically you don’t need pockets, but come on, they’re already sewn in, so why should you have to pay extra for them?
On a side note, it would be very interesting if the method of “hacking” which was used to access the locked features was made public. I wonder what Capcom’s reaction would be?
So I noticed in a couple posts that tournaments aren’t running gems. I hope that’s the case. I’d be really interested in taking this game seriously if gems wasn’t in tournaments.
How about if Capcom released the game as a budget title - with the 38 roster- and said, from the beginning, that you’d have to pay to unlock everything? So they’d be emulating some types of non-gaming software; buy the light version, pay to upgrade to pro.
In my imaginary scenario Capcom aren’t selling gems. All those are unlocked for everyone by default.
The thing is, at least then we wouldn’t have known Capcom were ripping us off and the thought would not be “Why isn’t this playable to begin with”, but “Cool they’re making more stuff for us after release, it’s nice to se real DLC for once”
And separately on the Ono thing, when games cost so much you have to be uptight about your hobby, especialy thinking about the whole on disk DLC thing where we gave them an inch with costumes, and here they are taking a mile now with things which effect gameplay, not saying that was all his fault (the push for gems in the first place which opened the door for their monetisation seems like it was though), but it’s just an example that the more crap we take lying down the worse it will get, especialy when the designers feel secure enough to intentionally troll their customers with stuff like bad box art Megaman and a downloadable gem (precise input) to fix a control issue introduced by them in the first place.
Ban gems in tourney and make a no gem mode avaiable online.
Capcom won’t do this though because it kills incentive to buy gems…
Ban gems, always, ALWAYS ban gems.
This should be a no brainer.
Capcom FG community is the biggest FG community. I’m sure they have a certain amount of respect for there community. However, yall better believe at this point were they stand there at there gonna try to get as much money as possible.
There a Business, they have a big fan base at the moment…so this is the best time to milk and stack dem pockets. That’s a generally smart money-making business aspect.
Im not feeling how most of the characters that alot of people wanted like Elena & etc were DLC…on the disc
…They know what the fuck they doin…
Same day release a coincidence?

Gems will be banned at tournaments simply by the fact that it would take forever with every player setting up their gems before every fight.
The standard gems are fine. I daresay they sometimes should add a little more.
A for the extra gem slots, they use up more slots. They’re basically the gems without negative effects which is fine. Tons of the newer gems have specific conditions that would make setups pretty good but not passively boost you over the line.
Think about the gems and conditions. This isn’t exactly brain dead additions to your character. I’m sure a lot of you guys online run out of gem time before the round is over right now.

it takes too long to set up gems for tourny to use, but if the crapcop$ figure out a way to actually get gems done faster than I think the default gems should be used in tourny. However, all assist gems and DLC gems need to be banned except for the no shortcut input gem. WTF with the no shortcut input gem that should have been an option in the game!
The core gameplay for this is pretty fun. I love doing the combos and the switch cancelling and love the fact that there are no ultras but other than that this game is really bad. DLC locked on the disc, DLC gems more powerful than default, no option to get rid of shortcuts, even having easy shortcut combos, It is all really horrid. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth Capcom need to do somethign about all this nonsense
So at the behest of several locals I went and picked this game up because it “isn’t as bad as people say it is”.
Initial impressions make it worse imo. Even when you start doing some good combo’s the incredibly large levels and slow as walk speed makes certain characters a nightmare to fight as timeouts are a bit of an issue. I think Guile/Raven runaway dumbness with alpha counters is gonna be a high tier strategy at this point.
Overheads were significantly nerfed for some characters since the loketest (Ken). I wanted a SF game with crazy marvel like shit and that is not what this game is.
The DLC is just a spit in the face on top of that. DLC characters I deeply despise unless they are presented as value. 8 characters for $15? that’s not bad as a once or twice thing in my mind. Freshens the game makes more shit, it’s the equivalent of an expansion pack. Issue I have with this DLC is that it’s already made … so why do I not only have to pay for it when it was completed in the original dev cycle, but also WAIT for it on top of that?
I’m selling this shit before it drops too much in value.
As other posters have alluded to, I’m afraid the logistical reasons for having DLC on disc far outweigh somebody’s subjective feelings on the matter.
This is similar to a case a few years ago when EA Tiburon made drastic changes to Madden based on user data, and people were rallying against the changes that they themselves inspired through online gameplay. EA, in a rare case of being in the right, was pleading the case that the changes were honestly based on trends during gameplay - they showed numbers and all. But people were still rallying against the changes simply because they didn’t like it, stats and figures be damned. It was truly a ‘smh’ moment for that particular community.
Also, day-1 DLC in fact sells more than ‘down the line’ DLC. This is fact. This is why it got so popular. But people still get uptight about it, simply because they don’t like the idea. Stats vs feelings again.
And now you’re making a case of not liking content on disc, when really you can’t tell me what the difference is technically. The disc isn’t heavier, and you’d be paying for the DLC anyway. And you have the benefits for connectivity, bandwidth, and HDD space all against you. What do a lot of people counter with? Their feelings? Doesn’t stack up in my opinion.
