This really just makes me…sad.
I was mad into FPS, even competitive in some, but then all worthwhile new releases were semi-realistic shooters that sucked ass and cost way too much money. Then, as if 80$ for a bad shooter wasn’t enough, they started with the DLC. 4 maps or something for 20$, I think it was. Ridiculous. One iteration followed the next, and with each new one they somehow managed to make gameplay less interesting and more frustrating (though I’m sure it’s great fun if you’re terribad).
“Screw that noise. I’ma go play some RTSs!”, I decided. Bought a whole bunch of them. Turns out, I can’t multitask. Played in a small fun-tournament with friends and random acquaintances. Beat one loud-mouth dude playing Marines with my Zerg in a 45 minute match to the death with frequent drops and lots of cheese on his part. I never felt as exhausted after playing a videogame (though beating that dude felt pretty awesome). Anyway, I just can’t afford to put in that much effort (and time, oh lord, the time-investment), so RTS isn’t for me.
SFIV came out. Looked okay. Gameplay mechanics were shit, but hey, it even got people interested that haven’t touched a FG in 20 years. Buy costumes, they’re cool. Shortly after, Super hits. Fine. Bought an Xbox for Super, BB, Mahvel. Playing Super for a while, same shit different day, whatever. AE hits. Begrudgingly I bought that, too. And the costumes. No harm, right? Just cosmetics.
Mahvel hits, all over it. Bought costumes. Hold on…DLC chars? Seriously? No way. Ultimate hits. Another 60$. KK, cool. Costumes: check. Same DLC chars, still haven’t bought them to this day (gfy Capcom).
SFxT. Friends tell me about the gem system and exclusive chars many months before release, we all laugh so hard. Game is released, gem details revealed. Inside of me, with the sound of an out-of-tune harp, something dies. They’re doing the same shit to this genre as they have with MMOs, FPS, etc. Except, they’re even more bold, progress even faster.
Really saddening to see people in charge, who probably got their jobs out of love for videogames, use content delivery systems in the worst possible way. And infuriating at the same time, because they hardly ever polish their actual products to any sort of acceptable standard.
It’s a slippery slope. All about dat cream.
