“Canned-Combos” is something that I did not bring up and bringing up heavy footsie game (AE for example) vs “canned-combos”(MvC 3 for example) is all a matter of personal preference to which is “better” to the typical fighter game enthusiast. Regardless if it went to the “extreme” in **EITHER **way it does not affect the likelihood of preserving the games **Replay-Ability. **A typical player who is not in touch with the fgc who buys this game would get thrills based on the humor, cosmetic design, and simple mechanics. However that would at max last maybe a week give or take (depending if he has friends to play this with). Pretty valid reasons why I bring up concern as to why there is a possibility this game is a “hype of the moment” kind of thing.
But you both missed my point. The idea is in fact the simple truth in that no game of Dive Kick is ever the same. Sure it has a ton of short term fun stuff and great voice acting, but the point is that the game has staying power due to the fact it is incredibly diverse. You don’t need 600 characters to make the game new everytime you load it up. The game as it is right now is exciting and fun, and I’m sure if there will be a finished product it’ll be even better.
To the non FGC player he won’t think twice about the mechanics or whatnot, but he’ll probably buy the game because its cheap and it’s a silly diversion for him and his friends for a week or so. So in that case no it wont get replayability, but it’ll still be played more than SFxT in most areas of the world.
And before you ask, I’ve played/watched around 15 hours of this game already. I still want more.
I’d rather play the simplicity of Divekick then spend months/years learning 40+ matchups and complicated (scaled) combos I’ll never do in a tournament match…not that there’s anything wrong with the latter.
No replayability? Is that why my 4 hour playtests turn into 14 hour playtests every time?
I went to the same sessions for testing the game as Heroic did, and even then I still grinded out a good 50-60 matches over the weekend in the fun and games room. At face value the game is simple in both how to play and the elements it revolves around (footsies, spacing, reactions and baits). But the simplicity ends there; playing the game has a lot of depth and plenty of strategy. I was still floored watching GLB playing a point blank game of chicken because his reactions were good enough to do so, and how strong Huoshen and Sanchaz did with playing patient (even to the point of not getting overzealous when they hit a stun). At the risk of needless self-flattery, re-watching my matches I saw adaptation based on my opponent, even to the point that I was rushing down and edging my opponent to the corner since he was letting me, despite Wolverine being the most defensive character in the game.
While some of the matchups need a bit of work (I’m still racking my brain on how to bump up Kung just a little bit so she’s playable but not busted like she once was), most characters are viable and matchups have enough depth that you won’t see the same game twice. I can understand why the game may look like a one time deal, but it isn’t. If it wasn’t for the fact that Keits lives nearby I’d be immensely sad that Sunday could’ve been the last time I played DK in the near future.
The only tier in DK is Zansam tier
This is basically how play tests go.
12:55 PM Keits: "Alright we’re gonna play from 1-4 and then we’ll talk about the game and what it needs"
5:00 PM Everyone: "Let’s get some food"
6:00 PM Me: "WHAT THE FUCK, THESE CHANGES ARE CRAP."
6:45 PM Every not-GLB person: "Laser Kick OP."
6:46 PM GLB: "Free matchup"
7:00 PM Keits: "I can’t allow this to happen. 4 of top 8 are Kung Pao players. She’s gotta go."
8:00 PM Me: Cries and still plays Kung Pao
11:00 PM GLB: “Wowowowowowowowowowow.” "Missed Execution"
12:00 AM Zansam: “Keits…I think we did something amazing. DiveKick is balanced”
The biggest problem with Kung is that she’s a big fat target with the kind of angles she has. It looks super tough to catch anyone with a headshot when her jump barely makes it over another players head.
The biggest problem with Kung is her offense is very predictable and easy to react to unlike N and Kick.
Her defense is just as good as Wolverine’s and she’s actually one of the two characters (Mr. N) that doesnt mind cornering themselves because they can easily get out.
If you rewatch top 16, in my match I cornered myself and Marcus was smart enough to recognize I have the ability to zoom out if he wasn’t paying attention, so he waited right where I’d be if I tried to escape the corner.
The counter to this is waiting for him to wait for me and then kicking him while he tries to space a counter attack for an escape that’s never coming.
The smarter counter to this is simple. Hold the Line.
I lost my house and the clothes off my back getting more dollars to play Divekick. posting naked and under a bridge from my iphone
Don’t get me wrong, the vid was great. It just ran a bit long imo.
Could have easily been shortened by a whole minute and still delivered on all the awesomeness.
Yeah felt like that video was stretched way too long. Like they added some nasty filler episodes into my favorite anime
You forgot the 4:00PM Insta-change to Kung after Keits was fist pounding the controller in anger repeating the phrase “This bitch is broken.”
Laser kick was the best, Shin character build needs to happen.
Keits made a few adjustments from the last beta test before UFGT. If memory serves me correctly he nerfed Kung and Kick a little bit and that was about it. I still maintain Kick is the best, but only because he matches up against Kung/N/Wolvie better than Dive does. Watching top 16 again really makes me think Dive v Kick is a solid 5-5. N/Wolvie both did better than expected, and even if they aren’t better than Dive/Kick they’re definitely playable and can win.
I’m thinking Kung should get a godlike K factor back. Her angle/speed seems good enough to use but overall difficult to win with. I think wolverine-esque K factor would make her viable but not overpowered.
Legitimacy at it’s finest…
I liked the early builds where Wolverine got K factor in like 15 kicks, and had a low minimum divekick requirement.
Or the even earlier builds where I gave him a full screen hitbox, and if you hit him then his foot in his death sprite had a hitbox, so he could kick you while dying and a double KO would happen. Oh and you could surf across the ground in a divekick animation while holding both dive and kick. Shit was so swag.
Divekick would be the first mobile fighting game ever where none of the gameplay would have to be watered down for the control format, and you could have a ton of fun playing for 2 minutes.
I would pay money for a Divekick kickstand for a smartphone.
I was saying all weekend that I want a custom DK controller made out of a DDR pad
keits is definitely onto something here. it needs to be released in some form. Pretty sure a lot of the questionable stuff is covered as parody, but that’s what we have UltraDavid for. I agreed with Jebailey saying that it’s not great to watch for long, extended periods of time, but playing it is damn fun and it has “party game” written all over it.
would be way better if it were reframed to remove all the retarded in-jokes. Fewer legal issues as well!
