It’s pretty obvious; people don’t want to play as a bunch of little girls in a fighting game. Look at games like Tekken, SF, and Bloody Roar; sure there some cutesy young women in there, but it doesn’t matter because there’s such a diverse set of characters that there’s something for everyone. When most of the cast looks like underaged girls in maid outfits and shit, what kind of demographic do you think the developers are targeting? Come on now. That kind of stuff doesn’t appeal to the majority, as evidenced by thier lack of popularity outside of Japan.

At that time girls of that age learn different things required of them to be considered women and after the ceremony they are full fledge women. they could technically marry and do all that fun jazz. The game can be horribly addicting to play but the voices / personalities / etc are equivalent to being excited to finding a $1 store near you, only to realize that everything they sell is crap. The actual novelty of many of the character designs runs out quick, leaving you with some great game mechanics but stupid characters to carry them out with. For the record there are a good number of people in the community who agree on that matter.
[]Two games in particular that are coming out make me want to roll my eyes so far back into my head that I can see down my throat, Aquapazza and Phantom Breaker. AP comes from the same developer as AH (SURPRISE) and is literally a bastardization of another game (which I’ll get to) with random anime characters thrown in. I mean characters from actual series just thrown in. The game looks like it has some manner of footsies and none of that IAD syndrome many people associate with ‘anime’ games but at the same time it still looks horribly lackluster to play.
[]Phantom Breaker looks so god damn dull in every aspect. Character design, game play, whatever.
[]Vanguard Princess is one of the best footsie / poke / space oriented SF style ‘anime’ games I’ve played in years but holy living fuck the guy behind it (the game was entirely made by one former Capcom employee) needs to get his priorities in check for designing characters. No one is over the legal age (maybe they are, who cares) and the fanservice / panty shots / etc are so blatant that it’s just, it’s just no. That’s what it is. No.
[]Japan actually gave you (the anime hating masses) a game that played entirely like SF with no air dashes, stupid anime school girl pedophile loving character designs, that was Akatsuki Blitzkampf. The entire roster revolved around nazis. Fighting against them, as them. Many SF archetypes made it in, like Guile, Ryu, etc. Unfortunately that game never took off here or Japan because, well of course it wouldn’t take off of here but Japan was too buzy sucking off AH’s dildo, among other things. The worst part is that the game was its own, unique offering to the genre, but to actually do business it was updated (read: ton conform) to mimic everything else on the market, everyone has air dashes, actual anime archetype characters are thrown in, and god did the presentation ever take a giant nose dive.
[]Melty Blood came from a pornographic visual novel. To call it pornographic is pushing it, the ‘game’ is 95% story and 5% horribly shit ‘porn’. Ironically the character design in Melty Blood is well, boring. There’s two school girls and maybe two ‘loli’ characters, the rest of the cast are well into their young adult / adult phases of their life. I’m not going to wax poetic about the game but while it is an anime game by ‘mechanics’ it is hardly anything anyone in this thread or elsewhere would be afraid / worried to play in front of other people.

I had been playing that game since AH1. When AH2 dropped I flipped my shit when they showed off Petra because I got a boner for a character to zone with, and well OMG TITS OMG GUNS. Now I shake my head at how excited I got over her. I mean even if you love the game when someone asks you “What character do you play in AH3?” answering with “Oh I main the pre schooler!” just doesn’t jive with anyone, period.
Konoha is the worst assault of character design in the game though, hands down.
We’re currently trying to shove it into French Bread’s limited minds that they have a global market for Melty but I don’t think they care now. I hope UNiB doesn’t suck so it can actually make it outside the shores of Japan.
