Dhalsim's Matchups

The #1 key against Balrog is to STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM HIM lol…

his gdlk jabs rock Sim’s world when up close. You have to be VERY patient… lots of lp yoga flames from 3/4th to full screen followed by various normals, fp, cr.lp, st.lk, st.mk – try to bait him into jumping over your yogas and tag him with a st.hk or well timed AA. Sim’s standing short punch is also excellent against Rog’s startup dash punches and his turn around punch, if you time it right… if at max distance you can even use 2x short punch or 2x cr.lp to stop EX dashes. Rog’s jumping fierce often stuffs Sim’s AAs clean if you don’t time them perfectly… and if he lands it, it’s a guaranteed 10 to 20% damage bNb for him (obviously more if he links super or ultra). Another excellent tool to remember is to throw Rog out of an EX dash punch. As soon as you see the EX ‘yellow invincibility’ frames come up prepare to throw that fucker and immediately throw out a hp yoga (which he can only avoid by using wakeup headbutt IIRC). Go to training and have Rog do EX punches and try to calculate the timing and distance on when you can and can’t throw him. Another solid tool is to use Sim’s Tower, this will evade Rog’s dashes and allow you to punish. Something I do that is probably frowned upon is that I don’t mind trading my ultra with Rog’s dash punches (only if I’m ahead of course). Often times you’ll be able to juggle the ultra with a normal (b+hk being the most additional damage IIRC) which is definitely worth the damage as his ultra otherwise is evadable for Rog on wakeup.

This video is an excellent example of how to keep Rog at bay:

Note that this isn’t a crazy rushdown Rog though, more of a conventional wait-for-an-opening Rog… rushdown Rogs are much tougher to handle, and I try to back teleport as best I can to start zoning all over.

I only use my knowledge from formerly using Rog as my main. I could very well be mistaken here, and if so, I’ll edit it accordingly, just trying to throw out some general pointers.

Good luck!

Vs Balrog I’m trying to elaborate a good strategy considering this scenario:
you’re at full distance
you’re throwing a fireball waiting his reaction.

Normally Balrog can do only this:

  1. block
  2. focus
  3. neutral jump
  4. forward jump
  5. use some EX punch
  6. use buffalo headbutt
  7. use Turnpunch

Rog players normally use forward jump, buffalo haedbutt or turnpunch, and If they predict your fb, they’ll do an EX punch.

I thought st.hk was very good vs turnpunch… but it’s risky vs headbutt.
HK Slide beats turnpunch and avoids headbutt, but it’s risky vs forward jump.

Probably the best solution is TOWER. Turnpunch will whiff (free combo), headbutt can be punished, forward jump can be tripguarded with cr.hp.

I’ve to try that vs some Rogs. It’s very difficult to keep him far.

since Balrog doesn’t have fireball, just like Abel, his close up game is just nightmare. I have to admit I still have trouble with rogs after thousands of games with them, these guys seem to improve with me as well. Just when I have some new strats against them, they dealt with them the 2nd round already.

Therefore, I would want to share some close-up games Sim VS rog. The scenario starting with Sim being knocked down and Rog is doing Jump in RH, 100% safe distance and timing. After blocked that, the rog will usually doing a few Jabs, and will lead to Overhead punch (i don’t know the original name), or Sweeping Punch. Because you blocked everything and a decent Rog will just not do Dashing Straight or Headbutt. I am now practicing to block low no matter what happen. However, when I see the Overhead punch, I will throw them on reaction (this is a good defense because it works on both normal or EX overhead punch).

However, some rush down Rogs have more setup than those, they will tick-n-throw, giving you 2 jabs, walk foward, 1 jab, and then throw. This is scary. By the way, they can also do crouch jab, standing RH, (which beats you teching the throw), link to far RH / crouch Forward and combos and so on… The damage is insane, I suggest block all those shit until they throw the Overhead punch, I have been on training mode for a few hours going on with CPU Rog at highest difficulty. Give him infinite energy bar and he will do lots of TAP and EX punch on you. But DON’T USE yoga flame, Human opponents just won’t fall for it, they know what you know and the flame recovery is just too weak.

Going back to Long range game, assuming Rog has EX meter. Try to jump back (don’t do Fierce punch), and bait his EX anything, at the moment it reaches you, do teleport behind him and give him a n.FP, and when you land, do a st.foward, then you can teleport back, or not. Some Rogs will be pissed and jump to you immediately, thats when you don’t do teleport and walk forward a bit, give him a B+rh. But never throw fireballs at less than 3/4 range. Remember to throw some HP fireballs after you throw 2-3 LP fireballs, this will interrupt them a bit.

Talk about interruption, one thing is worth trying, recently in some of my games vs Rog. I jump back when they are rushing like crazy (FA -> dash forward x n ), you do a n.LK neutral short kick, instead of FP. This way the Rog will be interrupted in their tracks. Well, not saying it will damage them, but it is important to stop them and make them think what the hell you are trying to do. After you land, keep doing s.LK, s.MK, and walk back a bit. But don’t think about IAT at all, it will get you killed.

I was recently thinking which one I hate most , Abel or Balrog?

I’m used to crouch tech a lot. So against Rog I always eat Overhaed punch lol.
It’s not easy to use grab in the corner when Rob cancel his godlike jabs into overhead, but I’ve to train for this.

you can also do j.hp, b.lk xx teleport KKK.
The problem is that he has time to do cr.lp before your s.lk (or b.lk) if your TP is too high.

just a quick note for the match up when rog has charge and EX ppn is only using d.str and d.lp
if rog does ex rush guess they’ll all whiff cause of sims hit box being to small
careful though, if you do 2 in sucession the 2nd can get l.p dash punch’d trade, which is bad

I think it will whiff only when Sim is doing d.strong, because his body position is much lower than d.jab.

imo d.strong = dumb. The start up and recovery are aweful. I think ppn’s motivation in that situation is just to agitate with something he can recover from in time to block/throw if needed. e.g. d.jab

just curioius does anyone else play really good kens? i player CP alot and played Dr chaos at winter brawl and i think this match is an absolute nightmare
thoughts? ill write more of why tomorrow

I have played good kens both online and arcade. They give me a hard time, but definitely not nightmares like Rufus. Ken is worst when they are keeping me in the corner and leaving a crouching forward space in-between. At that point, they can do crouch forward and I cannot punish them at all, I cannot even touch them with yoga flame / b+ mk barely touch them. Good Kens will see what you do before they do something, and they don’t SA/FA much, and I can only wait for them to jump in and I will try IAT, with a b+lk while in the air.

I think the best to keep them away by doing b+lk, b+mk when they seem to finish the crouch jabbing with you, this is to prevent them from kara throwing, even though the b+lk usually trades with their attacks at a disadvantage, but it is better being thrown by them and start over again. I suggest to train hard on your reaction to do b+mp, because their jump-in are pretty quick, and b+mp beats air hurricane / air hurricane crossover attempts really nice.

Mid range , Ken seldom throw fireballs, unlike Ryu. They tend to spam f+mk, mixing up with low forward , jump in rh/ fierce. I will do s.strong if they are not SA/FA much. Mix up with some s.LK, b+mk, b+lk XX fast fireball. Slides (LK version) works pretty good, as our intention is to interrupt them but not hurting them.

balrog is 6-4 against sim but every rog i play its like 7-3 sim, easy macth-up if you play smart

propably you’re playing against noobs
because the rog i play is hellll
one of the best in europe

Just because you play against a really good boxer doesn’t mean the matchup isn’t in your favor.

For realz. I guess any Boxer I beat must be a noob.

What are some good ways to zone out Abel? I’m having trouble zoning his bitch ass out.

I second this! What are some good ways to stop Abel from getting in? I know you can throw his roll, but if you don’t know the distance perfectly, you will be punnished bad:P

Are you implying that sim vs. rog is in sim’s favor?

It’s 5-5 imo.

its 5-5. you keep him out you win, he gets in close you lose… Just that simple really.

Its a match that you have to play really safe tho, its not free by any means. This match is more about playing your opponents play style than the character.

^ Very true.
Any word on whether or not we’ll still be able to through him out of ex-rush punches in SSFIV? I’ve heard confilcting notes on this.

This is a self evident conclusion you’ve arrived at here. If its not raining do I also not need an umbrella? Balrog’s headbutt hits limbs from about 3/5ths of the screen, his jab will dominate you up close, mixed up rush punches can ruin your day. It is very much in balrog’s favor. If the best advice is just play the player then that sort of obviates the need for tier charts, or websites about sfiv for that matter. We just need the domain www.playtheplayerssfiv.com, if its not already taken, with the aforementioned message on a white screen.

ps his sweep is pretty gnarly too
