Dhalsim's Matchups

I think I fixed it now?

Does anyone have any good tips for fighting vega(claw).

I seem to do alright against just about everyone but him, that swan dive seems to always catch me off guard, and his aerial grab can sometimes really mess me up.

I mostly just try to slide away when i see him go for the swan dive, but I am not sure that is the best option.

Sliding away is a good option, but sometimes it doesn’t work for me (for whatever reason, it seems to take up a lot of the area you’re standing in sometimes), cause then you can punish it with fierce. The aerial dive grab is kinda tricky and you may be better off dashing forward or back after blocking the quick aerial attack at the beginning, cause the cross up kinda throws you off and makes you do crouching back mk instead of mk slide.

B.RH does not work, I’ve tried it already and Vega’s aerial fierce kick or punch that’s a slash beats it :/. You can usually stop him with jumping mp, but you need to be careful about his EX meter cause he can use that ex swan move that hits you in the air and grabs right after, in which you can try air teleporting on reaction.

It’s not a bad idea to guard low a lot time unless they’re walking up to you for a throw or attacking you from the air cause his slide comes out faster than Bison’s and some of his moves are avoidable just by ducking.

IMO this is the easiest and most boring match. Just keep blocking and zoning. Watch out for throws, but it’s easy to see because just like Balgrog anytime you see him walking forward up close, it’s probably going to be a throw.
For the dives, just slide under and punish with s.hp. Just slide after the wall jump and you’ll be fine. There’s no way they can hit you if you slide after the wall jump. For his quick wall slash whatever it’s called, just block. Be wary of throwing fireballs when they have meter because he has a lot of EX moves that go through fireballs easy.

I zone using the standard methods and I use a ton of j.mp

Why does Balrog’s Jumping RH and Fierce never seem to trade off with Sim’s anti-airs the same way in training mode as it does online? I seem to anti air it fine…but online i pay for it dearly.

I find Vega a tough matchup depending on how sharp I am playing at the moment. A solid Vega requires a lot of quick reflexes and concentration to beat.

Like I know to never do an instant overhead jump back fierce if he has an EX bar, yet I’ll still do it almost every other match. I know to stop throwing fireballs when he has EX and never when he has Ultra, but I do it anyway every couple matches. His normals beat out Sim’s a lot but I still try to play footsies with him. I know he is going to do that super fast EX whatever the fuck horizontal crossup slice yet I still get caught by it.

Yet if I concentrate and stay on my toes, it is usually not a hard fight. Most Vegas have few tricks and if you recognize them and play safe it’s not too tough to win.

As for sliding every single time he wall dives, that is not a 100% get away free move. Good Vegas will switch up how long they float and where they land during wall dives if they notice you use it every single time they do one, and you will get caught. I used to slide every single time until a few good players would start punishing me for it. It’s what made me realize you have to mix in jumping mp and well timed teleports to throw them off and stay unpredictable.

True, shouldn’t have been so outlandish.
Point is, wall dives are easy as shit to counter. They either are in range to get hit out of the air/slid under or they fly back or you teleport then it’s a full screen game still and where Sim wants to be.

It’s a 100% get away free move. Maybe you’re doing it too early? Don’t do the mk slide as he reaches the wall, do it a tiny bit after he leaves the wall with some variation depending on where you and he are in relation to each other and the wall. You’ll go under all his regular wall dives, and if he did punch dive, you’ll go under that one too.

Imo this matchup is a slight win for Dhalsim.

VS. Balrog does Sim’s back. Roundhouse always trade with Balrog’s jump-in Roundhouse or is it just my timing on the back. Roundhouse that’s coming out too slow that makes it always trade?

This should work, but can you air teleport behind Blanka during his Lightning Cannonball? I tried once before, but for whatever reason, it teleported me right in front of him. And I did input PPP teleport which should be teleporting you behind them, but it didn’t :/.

I seriously got some trouble against GEN. Most of them just jump fest on me.

Most my AA not work, especially against his deep cross-up jump mk. I already try ex yoga blast or FA backdash… any tip?

Gen IMO is the worst matchup we can get.
Try to use more b.MP than b.HK as anti airs, and don’t use too much HP limbs because his jump is faster than usual and somehow the HP doesn’t hit. I use a lot of standing MKs and crouching MPs in this fight, and everytime he does the jump-in-the-wall thing (I forgot the name) escape the followup with MK slide and punish.
Avoid crossups with MK slide as well (LK slide isn’t as effective against that monster MK crossup he has)
Apart from that, I’m still learning the matchup, it’s very very hard to beat a good Gen

I think the Gen match-up is in dhalsims favor because it’s harder for him to land his combo’s against you since your a zoner (well if you know what you’re doing). I played against a good Gen at Otakon who had a 12-17 win streak. You just need to know some of the fundamentals of how really good Gen players play, but that can be hard since I really don’t know anyone else who plays Gen well, or see any videos of him being played well.

Knee works as an anti-air every time for his jump attacks and you can just jump away fierce if he uses the wall kick, or slide if he goes above you. He can combo into his anti-air super or ultra with the wall kick from the top of the stage so you just want to be careful about getting hit at all from the initial starting hit of the combo. Learn to block the cross ups and avoid those situations at all costs, it’s better to block low most of the time except for when he’s crossing you up cause he does have that one kick that hits low and sends you into the air as a set-up. If you’re getting up, try to immediately IAT away from him and you can manage to get a reversal, or block if he trys to cross up. It’s probably better you try to stay on the ground as much as possible so then you can see his attacks coming and react quicker to them, plus not risk getting combo’d in the air so only jump away from him if he’s doing that wall kick move. I think he only has one overhead on the ground so just look out for that too and neutral guard, it’s kinda slow though.

when you use gief, who is the one you destroy most, abel or dhal? thx for a reply, (been trying out gief).

Any effective Anti-Airs for Chun Li?

From 45 degree jump-ins, his b.MP and b.HK lose. I am having trouble keeping a good chun li away. Sim just gets beat at close range and would like tips on moves and patterns that can keep her out. Also is it possible to break the defense of a chun li that turtles once she gets the lead?

Her jab stuffs instant air teleports so I don’t bother doing that and the fireball to IAT trap is ineffective.

why is boxer match not in sim’s favor, i always thought it was lol.

Haha man that list is so old and inaccurate. That’s from when I first started playing Dhalsim in October of 2008, when as far as I know nobody had really figured out Sim, let alone me (I still haven’t even now). Don’t pay any attention to those matchup numbers heh.

Also, check the antiairs thread for antiairs. I don’t have much confidence that that thread is right, so if you could test out what you want to test and let me know if the listed antiairs work, that’d be nice.

does anyone else have major trouble with seth? his jump is just so damn fast i cant seem to AA properly (including his off the wall)

Have you tried j.MP? I usually have trouble landing his other AA because the wall jump is so fast.
