Dhalsim's Matchups

I’ve found against Honda, standing back mp works as a great anti-air to just about anything he throws out. Yoga fire spam works marvels against his head butt.

It has worked great for me thus far.

It works as long as you back dash, you can probably only get away with it once even if that.

His Jump Fierce will beat back+strong and Back+Round house at certain distances, that’s when slide comes in handy. At a distance with a jab fireball out, Standing Roundhouse wrecks Honda for free.

I like that, but you have to be psychic and not on the corner.

it works all the time when i do It .

I’ve never done it. Can you fadc out of the recovery at any time, so when the flash happens you can just do it easily on reaction?

You can See When A abel PLayer try’s to do His ultra . sow its not on reaction i fadc my fireball because I now he’s gonna do his ultra

What types of situations are good for db-fierce?

I definitely see the merit in using the move, what with it being major (for Dhalsim, at least) hit/block advantage. But I’m always scared of pulling it out because of it’s slow start up. Mostly I find myself using it in really ‘guaranteed’ situations, like when I block an uppercut and punish with db-fierce -> b-forward xx jab flame. I’m also starting to use it as an anti-air more and more often as I get comfortable with it’s range.

Are there other smart times to be throwing the big punch?

db.hp stuffs Ryu/Ken/Akuma’s Hurricane Kicks.

It’s also great for hit-confirming into Super (huge window).

db.hp links into db.hp, b.mk (as per Challenge mode), which is a pretty beastly (for Sim) combo that takes zero stock.

Gief gives me fits… Not scrubby giefs but good ones. I swear I guess wrong once and its gg and im trapped in the corners playing guessing games.:annoy:

The key with Gief is to make him pay…and pay dearly for getting you in the corner. Lots of jab fireballs, and when he’s full screen away, lots of s.hp. That thing catches gief if he even thinks about walking foward from near full screen distance. Giefs best chance at getting close is j.mk because that will stuff a lot of your long distance AA. If he starts doing that, then a neutral jump.mp will catch him as he attempts to jump over your fireball. Also, if the distance is right, you can catch him with a s.hk

If he starts spamming lariat, then learn to recognize which is which and hit him with s.hp accordingly. More fireballs are needing for those that spam lariat as well, followed with a s.hp.

If he does get you trapped, watch for the banishing flat. Most giefs attempt to close that list bit of distance by using it and if it’s a free throw on block (to the other corner) and then you teleport the other way and it’s pretty much over for gief.

The better zangiefs know this and won’t do a banishing flat unless they are countering you or doing it from a distance just out of your throw range. Learn to gauge that distance.

j.hk is an AWESOME tactics against Lariat if you find yourself jumping back away from gief. Most giefs expect j.hp, which lariat will stuff clean. Believe me, that move is a godsend, and it made my gief game so much better…it completely stuffs lariat as you’re coming down if you time it so it hits him in the top of the head.

If you get cornered and you’re down, look for a cross up attempt…if it happens, teleport out the other way with KKK and you just got a get out of jail card.

watch for empty jumps (my favorite move when I’m playing gief against sim) into spd or, worse, ultra (which he most likely will have by the time he gets you cornered). Because of that huge threat, I honestly never just stand and block unless i KNOW he’s not going to empty jump. If he empty jumps, you can jump towards him then do a d.lk at the peak of your jump which should drill you to the other side of him and then you can teleport or back dash to create room and now gief has to start all over again.

i don’t win a lot vs better zangiefs, but i have started pulling out victories lately. I would say the biggest change in my game is just staying calm under his pressure. A good zangief will find a way to get next to you at least once or twice during the round.

Where I used to go wrong is I would do everything I could to get away from zangief immediately. I would end up eating 2-3 lariats/ standing roundhouses this way and sometimes even dizzied, and by that point it would be over for me since my health was down to nothing.

You have to just relax and wait for the chance to escape. You don’t really have many options here and gief has a huge advantage when your back is to the wall. I have been able to poke my way out more often than not now but i still get caught doing jump back fierce into lariats on my way out. you have to be very unpredictable with your pokes in this match because one wrong guess and you are on your ass.

One thing with Gief, at the start of the round if you see him hold back to the end of the screen and start mashing triple kick lariat (the quick one) with 0 apparent reason, this means hes immediately trying to build his meter as quickly as possible for EX green hands. He knows you don’t wanna get close to him so hes taking advantage of it now…Usually what I’ve done is carefully slide up to toward him and start stuffing each lariat with a standing hp at just the right distance before he can even begin to get his first EX…he stops doing it…but don’t get too close and be ready to move and begin your zoning game at any second as he’ll quickly change tactics.

another good way to stuff the lariat is your RH slide. When Geif is in his lariat it’s a guaranteed knock down so you have lots of time to get back to punishing distance.

Do j.rh on your way out.

Really good stuff RealKungFuJo. Hope everyone was listening.

This is kinda risky because if miss or if you do it too late, you are screwed. HOWEVER, if you do manage to knock him down and you want to switch sides (perhaps you’re a bit close to the corner), immediately jump forward, then do a lk drill at your peak to the other side.

Thanks…my two main characters are Sim and Gief so I know both sides of the coin, though I’m still learning both of them.

Another good weapon if you find gief is able to stuff your AA with j.hp or j.mk is neutral j.mp. Smacks him right out of the air.

Who uses j.mk and j.lk, and when?

I can NEVER block a meaty ultra from blanka even though I know the blocking succession for it. a) can it be blocked? b) is there a good escape for it?

The blocking for his ultra is wierd, you need to block low first when he’s jumping up (and I think when he’s coming down too), then the 2nd hit where he rolls into you you can block normally. As for escaping it, you can yoga teleport behind them or IAT behind them, but you should teleport after the freeze time animation and not during it or else you’ll probablyh get hit. will probably fall onto him and lose a lot of health. Also if you’re full screen away from him, you can back away by backdashing or moving back and he shouldn’t be able to reach you, assuming you aren’t cornered. The safest option though would probably be to block it in case something goes wrong.
