Dhalsim's Matchups

I got perfected by a Zangief today who did nothing but kick lariats. It seemed to easily beat everything I did. Once he got me into the corner, he did nothing but spam kick lariat and I felt there was nothing I could do. Even teleporting didn’t work; it’d just kick me in the recovery. If I blocked, he’d just cross me up with and do a mixup with green hand or SPD.

I’ve been maining Sim with certain success, and I felt I was improving against Zangief. I was pretty proud of myself after beating another 13k G2 'Gief previously by zoning him and shutting him down, but this brought my self-steem to the ground.

I feel like curling into a ball and crying. :frowning: :stuck_out_tongue:

Any ideas folks?

punish gief lariats with back RH

u’ll slowly kill him

keep trying. I have run flawless matches against zangiefs only to lose to lariats in the corner. I mostly chuckle because I used to play zangief and I can tell the quality ones from the shitty ones and tbh, the shitty ones usually kill me faster. something i need to do more is as i inch closer and closer to the corner i want to look for a knockdown of some kind, do a teleport behind him then another teleport away to the opposite side and start zoning again.

I am also having problems with Zangief specially when he has me pinned at the corner. I can’t seem to get out of that spin move he does.

Not trying to pat myself on the back but I really don’t have to much trouble with giefs. You just gotta be smart.

Lets start at the beginning of the round. Generally alot of people would just jump back and put themselves closer to the corner. I highly suggest you do NOT do that. Actually stay still and let him make the first move. If he starts the match with green hand. It’ll whiff and you get a throw for free. Even when blocked, you get a free throw. Now you just put him closer to the corner. Now it’s time to work that zone game. Use fireballs and limbs to keep him out. If he jumps. The safest move to use is pretty much J. MP. Now that your shutting down his jump in game, chances are that he going to go with emergency plan-X (A.K.A Lariat). This is where J.MP and J.HK comes into play. As long as your not point blank when doing this. You will pretty much stuff lariats like a damn turkey.

I really visualize my match with shutting down his options one at a time. Once you reach this point, you’ll pretty much see gief players second guess every move they do. And the match is basically yours to take. Just a little note. My best option when trapped in the corner is either sweep him with Db. HK after a block lariat and then PPP teleport to the other side, then follow up with KKK teleport immediately to put you at the other side of the screen. If he is cross-up happy, you can use your KKK teleport at the cross-up point and it will port you to the other side. If you have trouble with that then my guess is to jump and use you D. LK drill to jet you out the corner. You might eat a lariat for it, but hey… Your ass is out of the corner and just quick-rise. And back to the ole zoning game.

Hope this helps…

Really don’t let yourself get into the corner. As the battle approaches the corner move towards geif. If he is jumping in at you slide under and teleport away or if he is green handing or dashing towards you wait until your just out of SPD range and jump at him and lk drill. If you time it correctly you can hit the back of his head while he’s lariating and be free. I practiced for hours in training mode on the hardest setting of the CPU until geif couldn’t trap me any longer and it really improved this matchup. Actually now I almost never get trapped in the corner against any char.

I think the unfailing way to escape from a corner against Gief is:

  • waiting his lariat
  • sweep and hit him
  • while he’s getting up, jump toward him
  • at maximum height, do lk drill, and you’re safe 100%.

(I put this solution at 00:42 on my video hot stuff)

Once you sweep him you can do 2 Teleports (non IAT). One to get behind him, another to get to the other side of the screen. If you IAT you’ll fall and Sim has gravity hax and end up losing because of it.

how do you deal with rush bison (dic)?

like… i would try to create space to get into my “comfort zone” but he’d teleport in, BnB. then when i do wake up, he’d teleport and BnB again.

in general, i have a hard time with people who rush

Thank you for your help and patience guys. Just recently started playing SF4 so I have much to learn. I really like this forum there’s a lot of useful information here. You will probably see me a lot in this section

it doesn’t work.
Teleport is not so fast, so after the first one Zangief simply do a reversal lariat before you do the second one.

shameless plug! But I liked the video lots of gud stuff.

And to the previous poster, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that most novice and even intermediate dhalsims (i am a novice) have trouble with pressure. It is all situational and experience is the best teacher.

When I watch teruchika, he goes toe to toe with people and he b+mp jump overs that are right on top of him almost all the time. In practice this is really hard to do and even harder online. I think iyo’s style which is a 3/4 screen approach is safer and more effective but I learned a lot by watching teruchika’s up close game. The only way you can improve is to play. Forums can point out some stuff you didn’t know like how to deal with particular special moves but when it comes to meta game type stuff, cross ups and momentum you can only hope that with time you will become comfortable enough to know what to do at any given moment. A lot of it is just muscle memory and knowing matchups. Most ryu’s I see online all copy each other, so you can start to predict (with a large degree of error  ) what they will do for example. Look for the pattern, everyone has one. Time and effort will make you better.

if you’re ever gonna play against zangief with Dhalsim, I recommend that you never ever teleport behind him when he’s getting up, ever <_< (don’t try IAT bnb combo). In fact, don’t even thing about using IAT unless he is in the air jumping (which you may still be at risk of getting hit by lariat). The best way to get out of the corner is to jump at max height and light kick drill, you’ll fly above him and avoid lariat completely while getting to the other side of the stage. Stay long range as much as possible.

Not sure if I said this already, but if you are narrowly out of range from ex hand, you can try using your ultra or super at that time and probably hit them with it.

Anyone else have alot of trouble vs skilled Abel players?

How come Abel sweep hits YT? Are you sure?

What would you guys do, if you find yourself in a game against a shoto spamming shoryuken

I thought YT evades all low attacks and the majority of mid attacks? Maybe you were in startup or recovery of it?

Block, BnB. Block, Knee. Block, Super. Block, Ultra, etc etc.

zangief problem

If Youre IN the corner en the zangief player spams lariat Do Youre Taunt (taunt 3) it will dodge it.
after the taunt do back mk or back mp at the right time it beats lariat. connect it with yoga flame . problem is fixed

block en punish there is Nothing else you can do

I just watched the best Dhalsim player i know get wrecked by a Gen. What’s the best tips VS a pro level Gen player? when he gets in close obviously. What would be the best strats for getting him away?

I was thinking back lk, lk, mp, fp, into some yoga fires. Or just tele out whenever he jumps anywhere near you.
