DEVASTATION 2009 : June 19th-21st : $10,000.00 in Prize Pots

Tekken finals had me pumped good stuff Naps!!!

This is a ridiculous assumption. Clearly Gootecks was being 100% impartial and unbiased when he said that he should be the #3 seed. You just don’t know.

Well, my main idea would involve a system that gets some quick input people from maybe 3 different regions. People from NYC don’t exactly come to cali for a one day tourney that often for example. So when I don’t use this idea for one day tourneys, it’s not because it wouldn’t work. It’s because it’s unnecessary.

When I ran brackets (one of which I believe went up to 80 people at PSM) for local one day tourneys, like you mentioned, this wasn’t a problem when I could do the seeding for the most part because I was familiar with who was good in the marvel scene. And even with the 80 man tourney, we had guys like Wigfall and Infinite and Ruin fly in from out of town. And I seeded them. Why? Because I knew they were beasts. You didn’t necessarily need tournament numbers to do that.

Now in a scene that’s younger like the SF4 scene, you may not have as many years to base it upon like you mentioned. But for people who know the game, it’s easy to tell who’s good and who’s not. Like at Devastation, what you could have done was get a representative from each of the major regions being represented at Devastation that knows the game (Like say we could use Justin, Sabre, and Mike Ross). And have them each rank the top 12 players in the winners bracket. Then add up the numbers represented by their rankings and seed the top 8 in order of the lowest totals tallied up. Even if one representative is biased, he’d have to do a lot of planning and calculating to fuck up the brackets in his favor.

stop talking.

sadly gootecks made very good points, but when he name dropped his own name, people just ignored his whole rant.

socal has ranking points for tournaments dont we? isnt that good enough to seed?

I’m not sure you’re aware of this, but they don’t only play Street Fighter in socal.

i am aware.

i am strictly talking about sf4 .

what are you talking about?

they should have seeded by battle points, that’s the only way to do things

truth!

I followed this tournament more closely than some tourneys I was actually at. Holy amazing streaming. Excellent work by the Lo3 crew, hope to see more from them or at least something similar in the future for majors because oh my god that made such a huge difference!

The holding up socal IDs and taunting for ten seconds etc… I can’t believe someone trying to promote the community would attempt to bring down such an amazing event like that.

Also, Choi is all the proof you need that such seeding isn’t necessary or even fair. Tournaments are to prove the best player, not rank everyone in order. Placing high is a nice benchmark and nothing else!

Thank You to ALL

I wanted to finally post up and thank each of the attendees for coming out as well as all those who logged in and viewed the stream for the weekend.

We will get the results posted up and information in your hands tomorrow (unless the apocalypse happens with move out…)

A sincere thanks to each of the DEVASTATION team members and staff that made this event possible, it could not happen without you.

EDIT

Totally my bad, thought they played regular T6

Good job to the Devastation crew and the announcers for the podcast

Look, no one who sucks is really gonna make it to the final 16 in any big event. If they get mopped, they get mopped. A few “pros” go destroyed by peers. If it happens late or early makes no difference.

all this ranting about seeds and stuff is getting ridiculous and sounds like all the top players don’t want new GOOD players to enter the scene and make a name…

look if you got beat then you got beat, you will eventually face the strong enemy why not early in the tournament, the best player will win nonetheless…

i thought the players want the community to grow, seems like people are just being selfish and wants all the attention all the time…

too bad 3rd seed gootecks got beat pretty bad by unseeded watson…

John choi what a beast

When JWong went to Abel in the SFIV GF, I’m sure that Choi was pretty unfamiliar with the matchup being relatively new to the game. But they both played really well.

All this Devastation madness I’ve been catching up on (thank you djWheat.tv!) has caused massive sleeplessness. Great event guys, wish I could have gotten off work to go.

That’s where you’re wrong, it makes a huge difference. Since SF4 is getting pretty big, we’re BOUND to have some sort of national ranking/point system for big tournaments and when we do the top 8 players in a tournament need to be as accurate as possible. In a double elimination tournament, theoretically, the best player should get first and the second best player should get second, guaranteed. The further you get from top 2 in a double elimination format, the more luck of the brackets takes into effect. That’s why seeding is so important.

At the same time, Devastation not following Gootecks and Triforce’s seeds could have been a good thing cause that’s giving 2 players a lot of power (but this is just all politics).

were the brackets set up in the best way? no. but at the same time, if you are the best, it shouldnt matter. justin still won, no matter who he played against. anyone that knows anything about double elimination knows, that even if you seed properly, the results are an extremely poor representation of player rankings. double elim is all about who is #1 and #2 and thats it. as far as im concerned, #3 and on are very random results. It’s like what valle and watson used to say back in the day:

“If you aren’t #1 or #2, then who are you?”

players need to stop acting like diva’s. You know, i would think players would be used to this by now after all these years. no matter the tourney, theres always bracket issues. there were so many killers in this tourney that they were all gonna face eachother fairly early in the final bracket, regardless.

That was justin being justin. Nuff said.:karate:

How is a 130+ man tournament a loser?:wtf: Have you ever ran a tournament before? 130 is a great turnout imo for a 1st year tournament.

I swear you 09’ers say the dumbest shit sometimes. :wtf:

so where do I co-sign on this post?
