Defenders Unite! (The MvC3 Hulk Team-Building Thread)

Did you guys see Comboman’s Hulk/Sent/Haggar team in that Hulk guide video on the front page yesterday? It looks very solid, but lacks an OTG assist (it mainly shows him using Sent’s drones and the Mayor’s lariat). This team is also the one he is seen using in all of his match videos.

Anyhow, he seems to do well without the OTG assist. What do you guys think about it? Is all of his strength consolidated in his Hulk?

I haven’t seen any actual match videos of Comboman’s team, but this team isn’t all about Hulk. Skilled Sentinels obviously have the ability to make kills and if Haggar lands a hit against an opponent, he can DHC trick into Hulk or Sentinel for a kill.

This team is much more viable than most Hulk teams without OTG assists because Sentinel’s drones can allow for mid-screen combo extensions, probably including relaunches (I don’t believe Comboman showed a midscreen relaunch). I’ll test it out at home tonight.

All in all, I don’t like Haggar on the team. I think Haggar’s lariat assist is too easily punished by better players. I blow up Haggar’s all day both online and offline (where you have less time to react to him) - so I just don’t feel like Haggar should be relied on as an assist.

I was only able to relaunch off of Sentinel’s drones midscreen if I didn’t start the combo with a ground bounce. I played around a bit yesterday and I really don’t like the idea of not having an OTG assist. Hulk with an OTG assist can kill the entire opposing team in 3 openings (2 in cases where you catch an assist). Every time you fail to kill a character because you couldn’t relaunch mid-screen, you just doubled the amount of openings needed to kill that character.

There is a point though where you have to ask “would I rather have a better HULK or a better TEAM”

Not saying no otg required but something to consider - for example captain America is WAY better with an otg assist bit that doesn’t really help iron man much so I opted for hulks anti air assist. It has served me well.

Hulk is blatantly better with an otg though (or Cap! Lol) - just saying be open to things =]

This is very true. It is important to be thinking about the team as a whole. However, most teams benefit from having an OTG assist, especially because many OTG assists serve multiple functions. For instance, Wesker and She-Hulk OTG assists allow for unblockables. Doom’s Hidden Missiles and Shuma Gorath’s Mystic Ray assists are generally considered to be a pretty good screen filling assists. Dante’s Crystal can be used to lock-down and set-up ambiguous resets.

While what you say is true, there are plenty of good OTG assists out there that benefit the rest of the team in addition to benefitting Hulk. That said, I’ll admit that I’m a bit biased because I’ve put a big focus on my Hulk play ever since UFGT.

I’ve been playing hulk consistently since game release and I even played “your team.” I think its a bit “gimped” if you’re building a team around hulk. Hulk needs an OTG. Sure, you can play him without one but an OTG assist serious improves his offense, hands down. If you’re just adding him to a team and not building one around him, then you can probably get away with not having one. Hulk also needs help getting in; he needs support to cover/hold opponents in place so you can work on unblockable setups/command throws/basic offense and mixups.

I would make more then one team so you can play your favorite characters and not feel like to have to shoehorn them all together.

For Hulk I would suggest:

Hulk / Haggar OR Akuma / Sent (Rocket Punch)
Hulk / Deadpool OR Wesker OR Dante / Sent OR Ammy
Hulk / Dormammu (Hole) / Ammy ----If you want to play Dorm with hulk, this is a really good one. I had a lot of success with it.

For Wolverine:

Wolv / Akuma / Sent
Wolv / Ryu / Ammy
Wolv / Haggar / Ryu

In the last team you mention, what assist are you using with Ammy? You stressed the need for an OTG, but that team doesn’t seem to have one. I really like Ammy though, which is why I’m wondering how you used that team… Thanks.

Cold star. I used to play this team alot but i eventually changed to s team with an otg.

I’m switching out Dormammu for Dante. It’s not going to be easy as so far my Dante is complete trash with his 50,000 moves but Dante’s Jam Session is amazing with Hulk.

While Jam Session is a great assist, I would recommend using Crystal instead. First, it’s an OTG. Second, while its startup is a little slower, but the lockdown Crystal provides is pretty comparable to Jam Session. And while it doesn’t help you control as much of the vertical plane as Jam Session, Crystal does have enough height to stuff most jump-ins, including tri-jumps.

In summary, if you don’t have an OTG assist from your third character, Dante should definitely use Crystal.

Just started using this team, only with Hulk on point, and the standard air combo in the corner into OTG L gamma wave>gamma crush>maneuvers<horizontal legion arrow got me 1,071,900 tonight. BEAST of a team with some crazy simple combos.

Are there a lot of players running with Hulk & Haggar in the same team? Is it a viable choice? Who would be the 3rd character who will help these 2 chests of steel? Wesker (Samurai Edge), Sentinel (Drones or Rocket Punch), Iron Man (Iron Beam), Dormammu (Dark Hole)…?

You probably want someone who can help you get in against other characters. Drones are great, and a beam assist is always welcomed. The problem that I see with hulk and haggar is that if I see them on a team, my immediate focus turns to snapping in the the 3rd character and killing it off. Once you get rid of the assist that lets them move around its all a matter of making them chase you. That’s just my opinion though, but back to the subject at hand, out of the choices you listed for a 3rd I say Sent drones then Iron beam. I say iron man over sent though because iron man has nice zoning on the ground and he has great tri jump.

Thanks a lot, Juece!! I know that there’s a very good player in Brazil, Comboman 70, who uses a “Haggar-Hulk-Sentinel” chests of steels team with quite good results but I do have hard times when I’m opposed to Wolverine, Phoenix and other very fast characters. That said, I like the synergy between the green beast and the Mayor of Earth, as Haggar can cover Hulk as safe as possible, giving to Banner enough time to air combo his opponent. Furthermore, Haggar can extend his combos with Hulk’s Gamma Wave or cover his head/back with Hulk’s Gamma-type assists. If I use Wesker or Sentinel as my third character, I am not sure my opponents would like to snap them in instead of firstly kill my slow-as-hell characters!?

Well sent is just a giant hit box and if your defense is poor then you might lose him quickly. Though try them both out and see what feels better for your play style and team, the problem you might have with wesker is DHC compatibility unless you plan on doing some type of DHC trick.

Personally, I would never use Hulk and Haggar on the same team. If your opponent is using Wesker, Zero, Magneto, or Trish, you’re boned. Their zoning would just eat your team alive. And like Juece said, a smart player will snap in your beam assist character and possibly kill it. Then you’re left with two terribly slow characters.

Thanks guys for your opinion!! Even me , I know that’s suicidal to team up two tank-type characters but I like this kind of overmusculed and overpowered grapplers (or boxers if Dudley had been added to the cast of MvC3…)
Even if I can increase my chances of victory by adding Doom, Wesker, Phoenix, Iron Man, to Hulk OR Haggar, I won’t enjoy it as well…

Anyway, that’s true that Sentinel is just an …ing huge hit box that can be easily beaten if you don’t start your attacks using Jump H or Jump S. Wesker is perfect to creat unblockable attacks but I need a beam or a shield to seal my opponent’s attacks!!

Hey all. I recently pick MvC3 back up after completing my arcade stick mods. I used to play Trish/Skrull/Hulk, but found there wasn’t a lot I could do wit that team.
Now I’ve been trying out Hulk (Gamma Wave), Trish (Peekaboo), Deadpool (Katanarama) and found there are some nifty little things I could do. However! I am absolutely at scrub level and am looking for some advice.

First off, do you guys think that this is a good team for Hulk? Trish and Deadpool seem to work well together, and I can DHC off just about any one of their supers from any of Hulk’s.
Which of Trish’s assists do you think would work best for Hulk? I’ve been using Peekaboo, but I haven’t really figured out any great combos utilizing it yet, except for calling Trish, dashing up, Gamma Toss, and catching them in Peekaboo. But that’s seems super gimmicky and is kind of tricky.
I know most Hulk players like to have an OTG assist, is Deadpool’s a decent replacement for Wesker’s (I really don’t like playing as Wesker)?

Trish has a projectile assist doesn’t she? You could always use that as it help’s hulk get in on people, I don’t know trish well enough to really comment on her. On the subject of deadpool I do know that his OTG assist is really fast but it adds a ground bounce to your combo’s. Try experimenting with the team for a bit and see what you can do with them.

I"m not really sure which of Trish’s assists would be best for Hulk. Peekaboo doesn’t sound bad, but I’d have to recommend trying out all three in actual matches and seeing which you like most.

Deadpool’s OTG assist is not bad for Hulk. Juece pointed out that it uses a ground bounce, but this is okay because most Hulk combos use the ground bounce near the beginning and Deadpool’s assist still works even if a ground bounce has already been used.
