Think about the choice word you used… ambition. He was so wrapped up in his ambitions that he not only neglected his morals but the ethical reasoning needed to control his overly ambitious intent. He showed no remorse, not even a snide apology when killing innocents, in fact he never even considered other forms of justice- which L at least did and chose the most ethical means. Otherwise L & Near could’ve capped Light ages ago.
Light could not separate the 2, this was evident within the first 3 episodes of the show. His only hindrance during the time he lost his memory was the simple fact that he didn’t believe he was Kira and had no means to tempt his curiousity via Death Note.
Like I said earlier, he didn’t second guess his motives and the fact that he was killing people with blind abandon unlike a normal empathetic human would have; this clearly illustrated that he deluded and completely insular. You really think a person wanting to be god and pass judgment is focusing on well-being of others, or is it that he wants to impose himself and the power he wields on others since god’s judgment can NEVER be wrong? Let’s not fool ourselves here.
I mean come on the ending clearly showed how psychotic, sadistic and selfish he was, he never cared about people only what they could do for him and the power he wielded. True humanitarians care about the person, not just the people. The sad part is that even while he lay dying he couldn’t even see the horrors he put others through and only feared his own demise.
Because as I said…in order to actually succeed in doing what he wanted to do, he would have to put his morals aside. Otherwise you are probably going to fail.
When he lost his memory…there were some instances in the anime where he questioned how he could possibly do the things Kira has done to others. Also, don’t forget the incident with his father and misa in the car…that was definitely not fake.
So, if Light won, what do you think he would have done after.
The ending is weird…clearly he went nuts, because he didn’t possibly consider that he could lose, and he had no good backup plan. Yes, I don’t think he cared about individual people…he cared about them (and the world) as a whole. As said…to achieve something like what he was trying to achieve, you will probably have to toss aside morality when it comes to individual people, or you’re probably not going to get very far.[/details]
Without an emotional system guiding his conscience what is a person left with to “judge” fairly?
Well based on what Ryuk said he would never go far, because his fate lied in Ryuk’s hands regardless. All Light would’ve done in his “New World” was make people live in fear of being accused of something via media/web, not really judging someone based on actual crime. In fact a bulk of his murders were based solely on accusations not actual sentencings.
lol This just reminded me when he was giddy at the thought of killing all of his obstacles, if he was a completely logical “automaton” he wouldn’t get such a thrill to kill- just see it as doing pure justice. I’m sure even today’s executioners don’t start smiling deviously at the thought of killing a convict.
He was nuts from the get-go, he just needed to be put into a corner to show his true self. Remember both L and N called for his capture being an “Ultimate Defeat”, meaning no guns ablazing but a irrefutable reality where his true nature could be shown for everyone to see.
Well I said it wrong actually…he didn’t totally toss his morals aside…the entire reason he wanted to become Kira was to change the world into what he genuinely believed to be a better place.
Having to kill some innocent people would have probably been a necessity to succeed, but that doesn’t mean that Light had double standards. Otherwise, you could argue that the death penalty demonstrates double standards.
This is the main thing I didn’t like about Light’s actions - killing people that weren’t proven to have committed the crime. However it’s safe to say that the people he did kill had a reasonable amount of evidence pointing that they had committed the crime.
Except that for executioners, the criminals that they are executing aren’t really “obstacles”.
Well as I said, I don’t think he was nuts from the beginning…I’m sure we all would have acted in similar fashion if we had this power, but we just don’t seem to realize it until we are granted this power (kind of like how Light pondered how he could possible be Kira when he had no knowledge of the Death Note). Of course, I’m sure most of us would probably regret what they’ve done after they have done it, and realize they might have gone too far (based on their morals), and this would probably make them fail.
Haha, all these posts should be put into spoiler tags btw…
Edit: By the way…it wasn’t Light that made the mistake at the end, remember…it was Mikami. I guess you could argue that Light made the mistake of relying on Mikami, but clearly it was Mikami that made the error.[/details]
Well this is one case where I have to say- speak for yourself.:razzy: When normal people overreact it is usually blaring expletives and lashing out at inanimate objects, Light on the other hand, acted like a textbook criminal. The type who go on pointless car chases when the chance of them escaping the police copter and 16 cop cars is infinitesimal.
He was a raving nutjob and writhing in the pain of defeat. Normal people have the stage called acceptance, Light however, was so wound up he kept going to illogical sources to gain an impossible victory. Even Ryuk saw that and didn’t go along with his bullshit.
Light was insane since the beginning, how many 2 second devilish grin close ups and saliva filled yelps declaring to Ryuk how he would be a god would you need to convince you? Watch the season one ending please. lol
P.S., The spoiler tag is pointless with all the info already released on this page, a newb would be likely to go to the initial page anyways.
Ryuk stated clearly that he wasn’t going to get involved unless it was interesting for himself. He wasn’t going to pull Light out of the mess he dug himself into and Light wasn’t insane from the beginning. At the end it was a bit abrupt with the way Light changed into a madman, but then again it’s hard to really explain how he would react after losing.
Light just had a superiority complex. He thought he was better than everybody and that nobody was smarter than he was. Actually scratch that, he had a god complex. The ending seems more like a final mental outburst which would make more sense, but either way the ending felt rushed to me.
i just read the manga ending, and i liked it more than the anime. granted, i guess the anime didn’t want light to go out like a bitch. but the manga made light look pathetic, and took his god complex away from him with the quickness.
Actually I mostly prefer the anime ending. To me although it makes “sense” for him to have a mental outburst after losing it just didn’t seem like someone who considers himself to be so “god like” would be so quick to pathetically beg and throw all his pride away. Light was so calm, collected, and smooth throughout the whole series that seeing him depart too much from that character would be somewhat of a let down.
Thus, I like the anime ending better although it doesn’t throw in some of the more interesting tidbits such as Ryuk writing light’s name right in his face, or Near’s possible use of the death note to force mistakes out of Light’s camp in order to expose him once and for all.
The manga ending really, really pissed me off. But then a week later, I finally accepted it, as it makes the most sense.
Light never really lost before. Up until that point every single plan he made went near-flawlessly, and even when something unforeseen came up he had a contingency plan whipped up on the spot. He was like Batman, but willing to go all the way (just like umpteen different characters have told him, Batman is responsible for all the people Joker kills every time he escapes from Arkham. He should’ve put his ass in the ground a long time ago).
This was his moment of triumph, and he got fucked. Royally. He finally trusted his own intellect too much and got owned for it. How do you deal with that when it’s never happened before? Especially when people you’ve basically looked down upon (and rightly so, for the most part) and expertly manipulated for *years *took you down?
Of course he broke down. This was to be his finest hour, and he blew it. You ever see the bitch-fits Batman throws when he gets moody? And he’s mufuggin Batman.
Yeah i like how the video was done. They showed alot of other famous bands/groups or singers in the beginning “singing” the song. But, then halfway through they get killed off by kira and they show the real band (maximum the hormone).
It’s one of my favorite songs/videos at the moment.
