Dead Space 3 Altman be praised

I’ve never been scared playing the Dead Space series. You’re too God tier to be afraid of anything in both games, outside the beginning of each at harder difficulties. Once you have beastly guns and a huge Stasis meter, you just destroy everything before it can even get close to you.

Game’s good for “boo” scares if those still get you. Silent Hill 2 is the only game that genuinely has me scared when playing it, and Doom III near release would hit you with “boo” scares regularly too.

Never played it because it’s not on PC:cry:

I respect your self control I just couldn’t hold out lol, the demo is the E3 demo so unless you avoided preview videos too you’ve seen all the footage, and playing it wouldn’t spoil anything for you. It’s ironic Mass Effect 1 and 2 are the only 3D games I like more than Dead Space 1 and 2 and yet, when ME3 released I was in no rush to buy it in fact I still don’t have it. I’m not buying DS3 at full price because I’m cheap and I spent like $250 between steam’s black Friday and Christmas deals but I’m definitely copping it some time this year lol.

If the demo is any indication you don’t have anything to worry about DS3 will be GDLK.

I’ve probably played more horror games than most gamers and in general I don’t get scared easily but DS 1 and 2 are pretty fucking scary to me. Going through those familiar long, dark hallways brought back memories it was really cool and unexpected Visceral included that in DS2. Everything being taped up was just extra creepy to me.

Yeah I was surprised how deep the weapon crafting system was, also fire+stasis coating=GDLK.

Having beaten DS1 and 2 on all difficulties except hardcore on 2 (fuck that lol) it became obvious that 1 suffers much more from the accumulated item stinginess veteran gamers have than 2 does. Towards the end of 1 assuming you scour every inch of the game for ammo you will have more then enough to use liberally after chapter 9 or so but in 2 on zealot difficulty there are many sections in which you are forced to use up a lot of ammo so you aren’t nearly as overpowered by the end of 2 as you are at the end of 1.

Horror like comedy is subjective. Some things I find scary you may not and the opposite applies as well however, to say the Dead Space franchise relies solely on what Roger Ebert calls “Gotcha” moments is not true although they do make up a large chunk of both games. I can’t speak for Extraction because I never played it but DS1 and 2 employ many clever and often subtle methods of instilling fear into players using various combinations of sound and light and that is what why the series is so important to me.

Never played Silent Hill, that’s definitely near the top of my backlog this year. And while Doom3 lazily relied mostly on surprise scares I agree it was somewhat effective, probably due to the grotesque appearance of enemies and how many bullets it took to kill them. Demonic symbols appearing on the walls of some rooms after you walk into them was a nice touch. I felt the first hour of D3 before shit started popping off was very creepy, the atmosphere was tense, the computer text was weird, the NPC’s were scared shitless, and there was some cool foreshadowing of the horror to appear soon, but then the game abandoned that approach and just throws demons at you.

Impressions of demo:

  • Beautiful as ever, the snowy landscape is a nice change of scenery
  • Lighting and sound design just as GDLK as ever
  • Improved QTE sequences, looks like Visceral made them feel more Uncharted-esque
    +Doge roll is great
+Weapon crafting system is really fun and surprisingly in depth, this is the kind of forward thinking idea any game franchise needs to stay fresh
+Upgrading is now done by finding different types of “resources” instead of nodes, this is a really nice improvement over nodes, because it makes you think about where to invest your resources and encourages balanced spending
+Cinematography is more fluid, the way the camera moves around Isaac and reveals the environment is a cool subtle touch
+Even on normal enemy AI seemed a little faster and more aggressive than DS2
+Visceral took a page from RE and now some necromorphs transform even if you blow off half their body, their movement and appearance depends on which body parts you shoot off
+Isaac feels more light on his feet I enjoyed the clunky Isaac in DS2 but I prefer the more mobile one in 3
+Necromorphs wielding guns is creepy and cool as fuck, this could have gone so wrong but it works really well, their sloppy unpredictable aim is fun to dance around
+With human opponents now you can get them to fight the necromorphs and sit back and pick off the weakened winner, this was my favorite part about Turok 1.
+Crouching is cool and crouching behind cover but not having a dedicated cover system is a smart choice, don’t want it turning into Gears of War
+Unitologists are back and they want Isaac!
+The E3 drill demo was unimpressive to a lot of people but playing it yourself is a completely different story that shit was intense with necros attacking you while you have to dance around the drill, it seems Visceral are really feeling confident blending action and horror

-Universal ammo, one of the hallmarks of horror games is resource management and it was fun to juggle different ammo types in the inventory, this homogenization is typical EA dumbing it down for “casual” gamers new to the series, people at E3 complained about this and I was hoping it was only in an early build
-I really hope it’s only for the demo and not in the final build but stasis recharges way too fast, it kills a lot of the challenge when you know every few minutes it will fill up half way
-While the DS series is a prime example of the strength of linear games, it seems like DS3 could benefit from a slightly more open world, I wanted to explore the landscape of Tau Volantis more and being stopped by invisible barriers hurts the immersion
-DS2 has some slight randomization with enemy locations I was hoping there would be even more randomization but the necros always appear in the same spots which hurts replay value

Overall I loved the demo the drill sequence was really awesome, I wouldn’t mind seeing a lot of those types of situations in DS3. A lot of people are worried DS3 will take away all the horror and turn it into a Gears of War clone but, the demo hints at something different. It ndicates that Visceral have had a clear plan from the beginning of the series to show players how Isaac makes the plausible transition from average engineer to survivalist hero. It doesn’t seem like an action game with a horror skin like some feared, instead it really seems to be overlapping horror with action rather then feature them side by side as DS2 did. I really like the character arc Visceral is aiming for.

Extraction came free on the PS3 version of Dead Space 2. It was actually a really good rail shooter, too.

Hardcore mode isn’t that bad in DS2, because hardcore mode is just normal difficulty with three lives. The only time I died in that mode was to weird shit like QTE’s and the eyeball scene. You just want to make saves at key areas in the game where you can potentially die, and at the 1/3 2/3 3/3 points in the game.

I watched a video about the games co-op on XBL last night, it looks to me like they did it the right way. It’s entirely optional and you don’t lose anything about the story if you play alone. It would be fun to do a second play through with a friend.

You beat hardcore mode easily? I beat it on zealot and thought it was legitimately hard. Hardcore mode sounds pretty intimidating since I can think of a bunch of spots where I died a lot, and I can imagine regenerator being a bitch.

@orochizoolander

I haven’t watched a single trailer, nor read a single preview. I’ll peruse reviews before buying, though.

Finally tried the demo. I know, I know…all of the prior demos have been turrible. It sucks, but not because of the combat. That mini-boss/setpiece, is probably the lowest point in the entire series. It’s just…bad. It damn near encompasses the worst aspects of the series and condenses it into a 5 min segment of horrible. Wtf were they thinking when they added it to the game. It doesn’t seem like it’s going to be any fun to play on the higher segments. o_O They need to keep shit like this to a bare minimum. smh

This feels like the closest I’m going to get to a modern “The Thing” game, so I’m down with the necros running off to infect other people.

You didn’t like the drill sequence? As I said above that was the scariest part of the demo for me because while trying to avoid this huge menacing looking death machine necros chase you and it’s dark so it’s hard to see where they are until they are up close. Also leading them into the drill was fun but in that part they spawn infinitely so it’s not a viable strategy.

Edit: nooooo! FUCK EA:mad: wish we still had chainsaw emoticon!

It was more annoying to me than anything else. You’re literally running around in circles in an arena fight, that takes place in a literal arena. I’m not that big of fan of DS 2’s last chapter either, but, at the very least, I can understand it. This is just a shoot the boss three times in it’s glowing weak-spot, and mosey all along type of affair.

My favorite part is the interaction between the necros and the humans. It reminds me of how you could be fighting the Marines one moment, and then them fighting against the aliens the very next moment, in Half Life. That’s something I don’t really see to often in games.

In an unprecedented move, I pre-paid for Dead Space 3 yesterday. Don’t let me down, Clarke.

I will fucking riot if the micro transactions ruin Dead Space 3 by making everything a grind to upgrade. EA has me by the balls when it comes to Dead Space and Mass Effect I’m going to buy any new game from both franchises no matter how bad EA…EA’s them up:rofl:…

Word up. My biggest fear is that the game turns out mediocre and that I spend the duration convincing myself it’s great.

You know, the way people did with GTAIV.

Did anyone else find the demo to be ***extremely ***mediocre?

I downloaded this and the MGR demo at the same time. Tried this one first and couldn’t stop thinking about when it would be over so I could hop on MGR.

Reviews are in. Let the hate commence. Reviews say pretty much what I expected, most claim DS3 is slightly less scary due to ammo being plentiful and more action set pieces but game play is improved. GI giving it a 9.75 kind of worries me though since they hand out 9’s to anything that even slightly resembles COD.

The one surprising thing is almost all the reviews praise DS3’s story as the best part of the game and better than 1 or 2’s plot. Personally I thought 2’s story was perfect while 1 was just a mishmash of every horror cliche that somehow worked so I’m glad the DS universe is being expanded, and hopefully more about the markers will be explained. That being said their has always been an element of mystery and ambiguousness about the DS universe so I hope 3 doesn’t eliminate that.

Really want this game badly, fuck I’m going to have to wait for steam sale, let me know how it is guys.

Ars Technica has an interesting write-up: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/02/dead-space-3-review-what-have-i-become-my-sweetest-friend/

Also

I’ve been having trouble with GI’s reviews recently, mostly because alot of what they write in their reviews doesn’t always match the score/the little sidebar thingy.

Also I guess the gave BlOps2 an 8.5, so MAYBE there’s some hope yet.

Joystiq’s review leads me to believe the game is everything I hoped it would be: at once, excellent, and unenjoyable. That’s a series trademark.

I’ll be picking up my copy tomorrow and starting it once I’ve finished Dishonored. I suspect I’ll find the game scarier than most, as per usual.

Event Horizon really fucked me up, back in the day. No movie has ever touched that level of fear I felt 15 years ago.

Hey guys, fan of Dead Space here. Rambling and spoilers ahead.

So, I’m not into 3rd person survival horror games at all, Resident Evil didn’t do it for me, neither did Silent Hill… “Man these games are boring and relying on jump scares, fuck that!” but for some reason, I remember buying DS cause it was on sale and had nothing to play and I got instantly hooked! I loved the atmosphere, the lore, the weapons, the fact that enemies were fucking freaky as fuck but you had a badass suit and killer weapons to face them!
I enjoy the fact that this series is happening in space, they can play around with claustrophobia, getting ejected into space, no way out type of scenarios, so the game creates alot of “natural” fears. Nothing seems that forced. Oh you’re backed to a wall? Well no shit, you’re in a space station. Why don’t you just shoot your way out trough that door? Well because everything is made out of reinforced metal and shit, it “makes sense” knowwhatimsayin?

So anyways, I beat the first one as the second game was coming out, so I instantly destroyed that game too. And, I also, belive that DS2 took everything great from DS1 and amplified it. Yes, it’s a bit more action-y, but I really REALLY enjoyed DS2!

Spoiler

Shit was going crazy everywhere… remember that scene where you’re getting away from this giant monster, only to fall trough some conduits, end up in space, fly off to a spaceship, monster behind you, ship crashes, fuuuuuuuckkkk I was like WTFFFF IS THISSSS!!! This is awesome!!! Like, I mentioned before I played DS2 right after DS so when we revisted that ship from the first one, hooooolyyyy shit I was blown away! Everything was “intact”, cleaned up and shit, but you know shit was going down. Like that other guy mentioned, I actually stood before the ship gathering my toughts before entering it, I knew this was for real. Alot of memoral events… Killing monsters in the train, hanging upside down shooting shit coming at you… Meteor showers outside the space station… The crazy cult building. That long subway when you go back to the DS ship, where monsters just keep coming at you… so much stuff going on!

Plus, new weapons, new armors… the intro to the game… Crazy Asylum? Fuck yeah! Loved it. DS2 was IMMENSE and had it all!

And now to DS3, which I did pre-order (one of the few games I do). So far so good, I still prefer DS2, and for some reason, the graphics kinda let me down a bit (I play it on PC, all maxed). For some reason I remember DS2 having amazing graphics, but that’s just probably back then, and I’m too used to newer PC games, graphic wise. Anyways, the game feels like DS2 so far, so that’s good. Playing this on hard, like all the other games in the series and it’s great. I found DS2 to be harder tough… maybe cause I got so good with telekinesis and salvaging ammo, I dunno. Sides that, I prefered the weapon upgrades from DS2 with the nodes. I also prefered the DS2 armors. But yeah, it’s still a great game. Didn’t try co-op yet.

If you liked the first 2 and are having doubts about buying this one… don’t, it plays just like the others in the series and that’s awesome!

I liked 4 way more than the others. The story, characters, and writing are among the best in gaming IMO. My only complaint is the cover system being too sticky and unresponsive. I died a few times trying to get behind a piece of cover with Nico just standing over it getting shot.

Thankfully I stopped reading after the second paragraph because it sounded like it would go into spoilers, so please put the link in a spoiler tag.

If you think DS is scary you need to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent it’s 10x scarier without even anything happening. The premise for Event Horizon was GDLK and for the first 30 minutes it delivers a very creepy atmosphere , but then it becomes a generic shitty formula thriller. As a kid it scared me but I saw it again last year and it was too stupid to creep me out I’m pissed off Hollywood wasted such a good idea.

Don’t be a lazy fuck use a spoiler tag!

Mhhh if you havent played DS by now, you deserve the spoilers. But it’s ok, I added a bunch more stuff in there, LoL!
