I’ve been hating on Morrison for like two entire years now for the insane shitfest his run on Batman was and all the insanity of Final Crisis (which I still need to reread again for a third time before I can really form an sensible opinion on it), and I still think that the whole Batman RIP thing was a massive screw up in both a creative and an editorial regard…

But on the other hand, if it’s all to set up Neil Gaiman writing Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? and it’s even half as good as Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? then it’ll all be worth it.

I have not been this excited about an issue of Batman since like…Jim Lee came back.

(And we all know how that turned out.)

With Battle for the cowl coming out next month, anyone think Tony Daniel can pull it off? I’d imagine writing and doing the art is quite a bit of work. Also, I may be a little bias because I love Nightwing, but does anyone other than me think that it would just be down right silly to have anyone but Nightwing as the new Batman?

NYCC '09 - DC Universe Panel LIVE!

DiDio asked Giffen what his post-Reign in Hell comic will be. “Two words: Doom Patrol,” said the veteran creator. Giffen then asked how many of the crowd were fans of the Grant Morrison Doom Patrol. Many cheered. “You’re going to be really disappointed,” said Giffen. “How about the original Doom Patrol?” Slightly less cheers, but still positive. “You guys are going to be really disappointed,” said Giffen, playing the audience. He said that they were going to make the Doom Patrol accessible to people.

“So what’s your problem with Justice League International?” asked Giffen in DiDio’s direction. “Does anyone really think I have a problem with JLI?” DiDio snapped back. (Apparently, much of the crowd did.) This led to an announcement that the classic JLI team Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire will be doing Metal Men back-ups in Doom Patrol. Maguire then joined the panel.

Johns gave some hints about Flash: Rebirth. “It starts April 1, April Fool’s Day. It will come out.” The writer talked about the return of Bart Allen, and said the goal is to have fun in the Flash universe in the same way they’re currently having fun with the Green Lantern universe.

Peter Tomasi discussed Green Lantern Corps, saying “nothing is going to be the same on Oa,” which leads to Blackest Night

“A new law will be introduced, which will be pressing some major buttons,” he continued. “Some major, major changes happening.”

Johns and Tan talked about their upcoming work together on the “Agent Orange” arc of Green Lantern. “It focuses on the Orange Lanterns,” Johns said. “Agent Orange is probably my favorite of the new Lanterns to write,” saying he’s eager to share the character’s oath. Johns added that Blackest Night starts in July, and reminded the audience that Blackest Night #0 will be a free book on Free Comic Book Day.

Geoff Johns is Ready for Adventure

CBR News: Is Adventure Comics a title youve been working towards for some time? Looking at the teaser cover for #1, theres obviously a through line from what youve been doing in Action Comics, Justice Society of America and Legion of Three Worlds.

Geoff Johns: Ive been working on this since back on Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes [his critically acclaimed Action Comics arc].

CBR:Why is this project being released as Adventure Comics and not a Legion of Super-Heroes book?

Geoff:I think it will be quite clear when the comic comes out, and we announce more about it, and when some more of the Legion of Three World issues come out. But theres a reason its called Adventure Comics." If youve seen the cover, theres still some details were not revealing about it.

CBR:Brainiac, Lex Luthor and Bizarro are three villains weve seen you explore in Action Comics.

Geoff:Really, its a culmination of what Ive been doing with Superman for the last couple of years. Its all spilling over to this book. Also, with me leaving Justice Society of America, Starman is coming with me to Adventure Comics.

CBR:What do you love about Starman that made you bring him along for the ride?

Geoff:I love working with him. I loved our take on him in Justice Society of America, and as all these plans come to fruition, Starmans story will become a lot clearer. Theres a little bit of a through line to all of this stuff. I just love the quirkiness of Starman. And the tragedy behind Starman. Hes also going to play a role in Legion of Three Worlds #4.

CBR:Can you tease what were going to see in the series? Theres going to be a lead character in the main story and some back up stories too, right.

Geoff:I cant really get into yet, but it does have a lead character and it will have more. Its called Adventure Comics because it has a variety of different stories. But yes, there will be a lead character to it all.

CBR:Is it always fun launching a new series?

Geoff:Its fun. Hopefully well deliver a comic people like. And people are excited about. And when we talk more about it and get closer to that date, it will become really clear why we are doing this book. Its an important book for me personally. And its something Ive wanted to do for a long, long time. So Im really, really excited about it.

CBR:Can you quickly talk about Francis and what he brings to the book?

Geoff:Hes amazing. Hes the best of Tim Sale and Adam Kubert put together. If you saw the stuff he did on Adventure Comics #0, its just stunning.

Also Giffen on DP…Giffen is known for using some weird ass stuff AND making them make sense, so here’s me looking forward to it

EDIT: Also, the ending for Battle of the Cowl hasn’t been approved yet? Isn’t that coming out next month? And it’s only three issues too. Doesn’t seem like DC to leave such a big story open like that so late…that’s more Marvel’s thing.

The last issue of Nightwing came out today. Gonna miss Tomasi on the book. It was a great run while it lasted. Hopefully good things are in store for Dick Grayson in '09.
