DC Comics Thread

You say tomato, I say tomato.

Did a little search for more info about MOTU. http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2006/11/02/comic-book-urban-legends-revealed-75/

Just read the latest Batgirl, seriously Gail WTF happened?

That bad? I dropped it a few issues in

So, while I thought I jumped to early a while back, I was actually right. The Court of Owls story line known as “Night of the Owls” will be run through each Bat book including All-Star Western, Catwoman, Red Hood and the Outlaws, and Birds of Prey.

Yeah. I’m subscribed to six of those books, so there’s no helping it. How did Kate weasel out of dealing with the owls? Maybe she’s off with the DEO or whatever.

Yeah it’s pretty bad. Remember when Steph took over as Batgirl? And she screwed up things a bit but ultimatley got the job done and things made sense? Yeah take away that last part and you got Batgirl right now. Speaking of is Steph still in continuity or not? Miss her and Cass.

She doesn’t really hang around with Batman though they do still talk on occasion. While her book doesn’t crossover I don’t doubt her appearing once or twice.

Shame, it started out pretty good

Batman and Robin #8 was OK, but I still feel that Tomasi isn’t handling Damian very well.

Demon Knights #8 was great though.

Lost co-creator works on Batman Digital.

Can anybody give me a quick fill in (or direct me to a corresponding wiki) for Batman issues 2 through 5? I read 1, then came in on 6 with the owls. If these owls have been around for forever, why has ‘The World’s Greatest Detective’ never heard of them? How did he end up underground getting bodied? Etc.

The reason Batman’s never heard of them is because
1- The court itself made sure he never knew about them
2- The court of Owls never existed before Scott Snyder became the writer of the Batman book and created them

Thanks.

So we have people who identify with birds but choose to live underground, and are still sane enough to do what no other criminals in the entire universe can. There’s normal comic book suspension of disbelief, and then there’s stuff like this. This is even worse than when Winnick tried to retcon Jason Todd into that Hush arc instead of Clayface. After American Vampire I expected better from Snyder. This is just lazy.

So now the owls are going to invade gotham - and I guess that’s how we’re getting this crossover, right? All the titles get owls because owls will be all over the city.

Why are they invading Gotham in the first place? And why haven’t they done it sooner? (edit: as in, what justification is given for them doing it now as opposed to some other time. Obviously they couldn’t invade before Snyder invented them.)

Wish keep in mind that in the DC Universe after the reboot Batman has only been Batman for five years (official). So it’s not like Batman couldn’t figure out the Owl’s existence for a really long time. Just only a few years.

Batman not knowing something every once in a while might be good for the character in general.

Bruce even remarks over his failure to realize the owl’s existence around issue 3-4 I think. Although I do think it makes bruce look very weak considering he is getting mind fucked and tossed around for free by this secret society…especially since he is suppose to be the world’s greatest detecitive.

If not for the dumbness of the reboot itself, this would go a long way to making it less bad. (And it still helps a little.) But he doesn’t act like early career Batman in the comics, he acts like grizzled Batman from Detective 800s. And he’s got Damian on the team after just five years? He already went through Dick, Jason, and Tim in five years? As if we didn’t have enough continuity problems before the stupid reboot.

Batman found Dick Grayson when he was 16 now and DG’s only 21 (also official). Jim Gordon still has brown hair. The Jusice League has only been around for five years. Tim Drake shrank. The entire universe is younger.

Damian’s birth still hasn’t been explained yet (since he’s 10) but it’s pretty much a given that Bruce knocked up Talia before he was Batman, probably when he was training with Ra’s. It’s just a story that hasn’t been told yet.

A Court of Owls going on with Batman not knowing about it wouldn’t work in the old universe but it works fine here.

And here, exactly, you have put your finger on the problem. It *has *been told, and given the ludicrously poorly thought out foundation of this new continuity, I’m not going to hold my breath for it being told better this time around. And they can say everyone’s younger, but everybody’s acting exactly the same as they did before the reboot, so it’s not like they’re seriously trying to fool anybody.

Don’t get me wrong - I’m used to comics going full retard; they’re comics, that’s what they do. I read and enjoy them anyway. I just wish they’d give the impression of putting in a little more thought/effort, and maybe giving the readers a little more credit. It could just be me, but I feel like some of the big publishers are getting a little worse about this lately. And after hearing everyone getting so hype for the owls I didn’t expect it to be this silly. Still looking forward to the owl madness next month.

Is there any official word on how the Bat titles line up in terms of time? I’m talking Detective, Batman, Dark Knight, and +Robin. If they’re all hitting the owls at the same time, does that mean they’re supposed to be simultaneous?

I dont think the reboot situation is silly, I mean granted I think certain a aspects about the canon could stand to be explained a bit more but ultimately it was a chance to invite new readers and also sustain the established base of fans they gathered over the last decade. I could see from both perspectives of this argument but IMO I think the new 52 was a brilliant move that waved in a new trend to the industry that for better or for worse is doing wonders for the industry right now.

As it pertains to the bat books I don’t mind this new direction or the owls saga. In fact I think this will set a great foundation for future writers of the series in that it will inspire them to bend the mythos and characterization of bruce a bit more and possibly allow for some more flexibility in his stories. I’m also excited for the origin re-telling of damian and the introduction of cass in this new universe…I didn’t read much about the last batgirl so I’ll reserve judgment until I read about of her.
