DC Comics Thread

Overpants isn’t a real word though, laugh out loud. :stuck_out_tongue:

Devin Grayson, the writer had Dick Grayson, the character raped by Tarantula (female) when she wrote Nightwing. Those were dark days indeed. I just mentioned a bearded lady because NW is visiting the circus in issue one.

Proof positive that jokes aren’t funny if you explain them. Not that it was funny before but still…

I am…at you =P

Wow, writers disliked Rick not being Robin even back then…

That whole incident was shady at best, I think that was the defining moment that broke my childhood. My greatest hero and the person I idolized in comics, Dick Grayson, got raped by a bitch while drugged up and defeated. I was like WTF, all sad and stuff, wondering why of all people this happened to the one I like…

Stupid memories.

DC’s Relaunch pitch to retailers. Answers a ton of questions.

Interesting, although I don’t really believe DC will put much effort into marketing as they make it out to be. Nothing they said really stemmed my worries, and I still expect this initiative to fail despite what they believe.

Some reposting from the Bat thread, and other stuff I got today:

Flashpoint: Batman Knight of Vengeance #1
Flashpoint #2 (Batman is in it).
Batman 100 Page one shot collecting Peter Milligan’s "Dark Knight: Dark City"
Flashpoint: Citizen Cold #1.
Flashpoint: Legion of Doom #1.
Green Lantern/Flash 100-Page comic that I suppose collects “Faster friends”.

The new Justice League will have 15 members. At least that means they can do more stories without Aquaman. Reserve him for underwater missions only. Seriously.

Sano, you underestimate Aquaman: Done right, he can have deadly powers sorta like PreCrisis Supes.
Also 15 is a big number, yeesh.

Why are you hating on Aquaman? I’m tired of the disrespect Aquaman receives, you’d think after the care and badassery he got in Brightest Day people would think differently and keep an open minded approach with him, but apparently not.

To be honest I got dropped Brightest Day early on. I don’t care about Hawkman, Aquaman or the new Firestorm and I felt like the series was shoving them down my throat and still failing to make me care about them.

As usual I felt like I had to read 100 books to care about some of these older characters instead of the book I had in my hands.

That’s a big problem when DC does events. Even when they are supposed to be new reader friendly they are not really.

Not that Marvel isn’t guilty of this either at times. The difference for me is I’m a long time Marvel reader so I pretty much don’t get lost with anything because I enter most stories with some point of reference of something I read in the past. With DC there are still a lot of books I enter as new reader on the block. I still think Marvel tries to be as new reader friendly as possible, give or take.

Though yeah Bendis has shoved Sentry and the Hood down our throats too and no one gives a crap about them lol! But at least his stories feature a lot of other characters people care about. Doesn’t always work but in my eyes he skates on by, sometimes.

Back to DC. I’m not saying a relaunch is the best answer, but some people at DC have no idea how to please older readers and newer readers at the same time. Maybe for the way they approach books it’s the best answer.

AYO if you’re tired of me making fun of Aquaman I’ll let up. But c’mon man he road a SEAHORSE and he had a WATER HAND. If Johns is out to make people like him then he’s got his work cut out for him.

I didn’t think the one handed goatee guy was the right move either entirely but at least they were trying something different. And that Aquaman got DCAU cred too so there was that at least.

The difference is Sentry and the Hood don’t have history, they were just annoying characters that Bendis thought he was clever to bring back around and ultimately ruin.

Aquaman has been around since November of 1941, there is a little more respect to give there. Referencing his seashorse and the water hand is kind of a moot point considering what other more popular characters have gone through (Batman and his ever changing outfits, Superman taking over the world in pope hats and using a space ship with a boxing glove, Spider-Man and the Spider Buggy, turning into a giant stupid spider, etc.)

The following and confusion I don’t see what you mean, if I have an interest in a character or a comic I don’t just jump right in and expect the issue to give me everything I need right from the get go. I go and research stuff and read up on them and their history beforehand to get a better handle of their character and what they aspire to do.

if you don’t like or enjoy the character that is fine, I didn’t much care for the Hawkman segments in BD myself because it’s the same fucking story they always do when the Hawktards are together.

Hawkman: "I love you bitch."
Hawkgirl: "I love you to…OH NOES! Before we can consumate we are being attacked, oh lordy!"
Hawkman: "Don’t worry my love, I’ll just hit things a lot until we both die virgins again!"
Hawkgirl: “'Kay.”

Don’t think my comment was me getting my panties in a wad as well, you weren’t just doing a one off comment. You made an ignorant remark that Aquaman should just stay underwater, we were like “Lol what?” and you try to brush it off.I’m not upset or anything just wanted to clarify and get a straight answer (All you said is you don’t like him, which is perfectly fine). But he isn’t just a normal man when on land or anything, give him a little credit. I’d like to see what dynamic he brings to the new team and what role he is given. Geoff Johns has been doing admirable work with the Sea King, and I think he is in good hands for the time being. (Unlike how I think the Bat Titles are, that whole line-up seems questionable at best).

It’s usually just a matter that if it’s not Superman or Batman (And now I suppose Flash and GL), then most characters seem to be brushed off or are just for a certain audience when I think they would have a wider appeal if marketed better. DC doesn’t really try to do so though, and misconceptions that have always haunted specific characters continue to do so.

Also not trying to fight or anything, I know this is SRK and all but I respect everyone expect Sensei that visits the comic book forums and respect all opinions. I just like to debate, although I do sound mean from time to time >_>

Oh no I’m not offended or anything, it’s cool. I can’t really get pissed talking about comics. By the same token if I’ve upset anyone I apologize. Everyone loves Batman at least. Group hug!

Sure Batman and Superman have gone through lame stuff in the past. They’ve changed and evolved. Aquaman hasn’t really. Well he did for a while with the goatee and all, but it didn’t stick.

Sorry but everything about the character just doesn’t really work for me and lots of other people. The color scheme, the power set, everything. At least Namor is an asshole and never ceases to entertain lol!

Maybe Aquaman has land skills, but I don’t see him filling any roles others can’t fill on the Justice League either. In the first season of the Justice League cartoon, did you feel that someone was missing? Nope not me. Looked like they had all their bases covered. Shrug…

Johns loves him some Hal Jordan GL, some old school Aquaman and some Flash Barry, when the entire universe had already accepted Wally. He’s not the only creator who secretly wants everything to be like the comics he grew up reading. You know, there’s nothing wrong with reading back issues…

I’m sorry but I completely disagree with having to research anything and any character to enjoy a comic you purchased. Maybe all of the answers you are seeking won’t be in the comic you have but it shouldn’t be so complex that you have to check wikipedia.

Brightest Day wasn’t really that much of a culprit since it was easy to follow unlike some past events, but it really gave me no reason to care for any of the characters they focused on. Looking online to figure out why I should care about a character because he did this and this in an issue I’m not reading doesn’t really work for me. The writer should make me care.

Maybe dedicating an issue to one character instead of focusing on three people all the time in every issue of Brightest Day might have worked better. It’s a biweekly, use the time.

Take like any Morrison story. Most of the time I don’t understand who any of the characters are. Or what the heck novel he’s referencing because I’m just not that smart. With all that said I’m still able to get a gist of what is going on and still enjoy the story without having to google anything. Um, except for Final Crisis because he was doing double acid then…

There’s an old saying, Slott recently repeated it but it goes - Every comic is someone’s first comic. I’m not exactly sure how true that is because well let’s face it I’m not seeing any 12 year olds on Wednesday. Still if more writers wrote books with that line of thinking in mind well not seeing anything wrong with that.

Again it seems that DC needs a relaunch to start thinking that way, and I don’t think they do but hey if I can approach Aquaman as a ‘new’ character then maybe it’s for the best.

Speaking of events like Brightest Day, it has always perplexed me why DC has big events like 52 and even freaking Trinity where the big three take a back seat. Huh? Everyone loves Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Maybe people don’t care for whatever is going on in their monthly books, but most people still love the characters. Hell if Aquaman was chilling with Batman during Brightest Day maybe I’d hang in there longer then I did. Who knows.

Aquaman’s water hand is really his pimp hand~
Aquaman’s powers should be given a boost: Let him have the ability to I dunno change/alchemize air into water, let him be able to launch water hadukens.
Pull off a DBZ and have him train in an underwater region where the gravity pull is murderous, he’ll be Superman power-level that way~
I’m gonna post this just to rep my bro Aquaman-

No one can hate the majestic awesomeness of BaTB Aquaman, NO ONE!

I see where you are coming from Sano but I still have to disagree on a few points. But it’s each our own opinion, and we have every right to it. Bro hug my friend.

I’ll be checking out Aquaman #1 when it drops and let you know how it goes, just to give you an idea if it’s alright or not. I will probably get Justice League #1 as well, since I am curious to see how DC handles it this time since they said multiple times it’s their flagship title. I haven’t been interested in Justice League since the Morrison run, when the fantastic Mullet of Superman’s graced each beautiful panel.

What I liked about Morrison’s JL run is how despite the changes DC made to characters, Morrison just WORKED with it:
Dian is dead and her mother replaces her as WW? Not a problem
Supes gets split into Blue and Red? Not a problem
That’s just to name a few.
I found it rather funny tho, how in one issue Supes states that the team is disbanding and that a new team will be formed…and it ends up having the original 7 members and a few others XD

I personally loved the first issue of Joe Kelly’s run-

Oh my god Tizoc

I have to see if that is collected somehwere, that image is amazing. And yeah Morrison is a real trooper when it comes to weird ass changes.

It should be collected in this book-

It also has some of my fav. Doug Manhke artwork =)

I need to get around to getting all those JL trades, since I have such fond memories of those comics…like when Prometheus wasn’t a punk ass bitch and he very convincingly took down the league.

Yup that was during Morrison’s run.
Of all the ‘badass’ characters introduced in the 90s Prometheus stands out for not only having a badass outfit and tech, but in how he was a very deadly threat.

Yeah, I really loved him. Why his later treatment in like Green Arrow and other stories bothered me a lot, what the hell happened? He just wouldn’t forget how to go about and do what he did.

He should still be a very dangerous threat. I think the only story that gave him some threatening swagger again was the Hush returns stuff Zephy graciously gave me, since I was one of the few people who liked the Hush arc…and Zephy hates me for that lol.
